Make whole foods the staple of your diet. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean protein foods. Here's a simple recipe that is packed with protein, fiber and antioxidants (which protect your cells and tissues from damage). I made this for a corporate client recently and they devoured it.

Spring Pea Salad

1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, torn
1 Tbsp capers, roughly chopped
1 small shallot, thinly sliced
1 tsp grated lemon zest
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/8 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
10 oz. green peas, blanched if fresh or thawed if frozen (I used frozen)

In a medium bowl, combine the first 7 ingredients. Add the peas and toss gently. Serve at room temperature.

Orthorexia nervosa is a type of eating disorder I am seeing more and more. It is characterized by the unhealthy obsession with trying to eat healthfully all the time. In the process, a negative and stressful relationship with food is created that can lead to undernutrition and affect mental status (e.g., depression, anxiety). It usually starts innocently when the person adopts a healthier lifestyle, but then makes that lifestyle so rigid and unwaivering that their physical and mental health is compromised. And often times, what they think are healthy behaviors actually are not. Seek guidance from a registered dietitian to truly make yourself healthy....and happy.

Nutrition supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Sometimes you are not getting what is stated on the bottle. Independent organizations like the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and Consumer Lab (CL) review supplements to see if the supplements contain what the manufactures claim is in the bottle. Contaminants are also identified. Supplements that have "passed" the test will display the USP or CL symbol on the bottle.

You have heartburn, but heartburn has never been an issue. What are you doing differently? You started chewing peppermint gum again (several sticks a day). That may be the culprit. Peppermint relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is a ring of muscle at the top of your stomach. When the LES relaxes, stomach acid can reflux back into the esophagus causing heartburn. Once you stop chewing the gum it should go away. This goes for anything containing peppermint, including peppermint tea.

Persistent metabolic adaptation 6 years after “The Biggest Loser” competition - Fothergill -...

Overweight and obesity is more complex than most of us think. Researchers followed contestants from the Biggest Loser TV show. In short, the majority of the contestants in the study gained weight back after 6 years. Some are heavier than when they started the show (back up to 400 + pounds). Results showed their metabolism is now much lower than it should be (some are burning over 500 kcals less than they should for someone their size). The metabolic changes with weight loss make it difficult to maintain the lower weight. The body fights to gain the weight back. Does that mean is pointless to try to lose weight? No. Weight loss can be maintained. There are contestants that have kept off the weight. Just remember this is a lifelong effort that is definitely worth it.
