This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the families, neighbors, promotoras, community leaders, small businesses, and organizations that help make Los Angeles County stronger.

Part of supporting our communities is making sure people have clear information about their health coverage.

Medi-Cal is not ending. But some rules are changing in 2027 and 2028. Some adults may need to renew their coverage twice a year beginning in 2027, and some may be subject to new work and community engagement requirements. Other changes may affect dental coverage or monthly premiums for certain adult immigrant members, while small copayments may begin for some higher-income adults in late 2028.

California’s Department of Health Care Services also confirms that beginning July 1, 2027, dental and premium changes will affect some adult Medi-Cal members based on immigration status, while exemptions and continued coverage apply to several populations.

The most important thing you can do today is prepare:

Update your address and phone number, open every Medi-Cal notice you receive, know when you need to renew, and ask for help if you have questions. Free assistance and translated resources are available.

What does a Coverage Champion actually do?

They share clear information. They support people as they understand what Medi-Cal changes may apply to them. And they connect neighbors to trusted resources when they need additional help.

Coverage Champions are not asked to determine someone’s eligibility or answer complicated legal or immigration questions. When a case requires expertise, Champions connect that person to someone trained to help.

If your community trusts you, you can help.

Become a Coverage Champion through our website at KeepLACovered.org .

Changes are coming to Medi-Cal in 2027, and Keep LA Covered is working to make sure Los Angeles County residents know what they need to do to protect their health coverage.

Starting January 1, some adults ages 19–64 will need to meet new work or community engagement requirements to keep Medi-Cal. Beginning March 1, some members will also have their eligibility checked every six months instead of once a year. Medi-Cal will notify members when these requirements apply to them.
The most important thing you can do right now is stay informed. Make sure Medi-Cal has your current address and contact information, watch your mail closely, and respond to notices when they arrive.

Keep LA Covered is here to help communities across Los Angeles County understand these changes, find reliable information and take the steps necessary to stay covered.

Follow us for updates as 2027 approaches. Because no one should lose access to care simply because they didn’t know the rules were changing.

You do not need to know every rule or have every answer. Coverage Champions are connectors — not eligibility workers or legal advisors.

Medi-Cal rules are changing, but you do not have to figure them out alone.

Beginning in 2027, some adults ages 19–64 will face new requirements, including more frequent coverage checks and work, school or community engagement rules. Many people may be excused from some requirements.

For Medi-Cal members, the next steps are simple: Keep your contact information current. Know your renewal date. Watch for notices by mail, phone or text. Respond as soon as Medi-Cal asks for information.
