đź’ś Meet the Experts: Shelby Yaceczko

Meet Shelby Yaceczko, DCN, RDN-AP, CNSC, founder of F-U Cancer and an advocate for integrating nutrition, physical activity, and supportive care throughout the cancer experience. Her work is focused on building a bridge between patients and the expert support they deserve, helping make cancer care feel less fragmented and more connected.
A message she shares with newly diagnosed patients: you don’t have to navigate cancer alone. Through our RiseStrong Platform, Shelby is helping build a community where patients and caregivers can access evidence-based education, practical resources for symptom management, and real-time support throughout the cancer journey.

A cancer diagnosis changes more than the body. It changes the mind, emotions, relationships, and sense of self. The uncertainty, fear, stress and emotional weight that accompany cancer can be just as challenging as the physical side effects of treatment. That's why supportive cancer care must include mental health and mindfulness as essential components of the healing journey.

Mindfulness isn't about pretending everything is okay. It's about creating space to breathe, process difficult emotions, reduce stress, and stay grounded through moments of uncertainty. Whether it's meditation, deep breathing, journaling, gentle movement, or simply being present, these practices can help patients and caregivers navigate the emotional impact of cancer with greater resilience.

At F-U Cancer, we believe caring for the whole person means recognizing that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. Healing isn't only measured by scans and lab results. It's also found in hope, connection, resilience, and the support we provide one another along the way.

Social isolation is one of the most difficult challenges of cancer treatment. Even when surrounded by people, many patients feel disconnected from their routines, their roles, and sometimes from the very communities they once relied on. Fatigue, immunosuppression, physical changes and emotional distress can all make it harder to maintain social ties, often leading to loneliness during a time when support is most needed. This matters. Social isolation is linked to worse mental health outcomes, reduced quality of life and even poorer recovery experiences. This is where supportive cancer care plays a critical role.

Creating intentional communities of support, both in-person and digital, can help bridge this gap. Virtual platforms, remote symptom monitoring and online education can reduce barriers to connection, especially for those who are immunocompromised, fatigued or geographically isolated. Cancer care should not be isolating care. By integrating community-building and digital health into supportive care models, we can help patients stay connected, supported, and seen throughout their journey, which is exactly what we’re building at F-U Cancer. Because healing happens best in connection.

Financial toxicity is one of the most under-recognized side effects of cancer care and its impact on survivorship is profound. Even after treatment ends, many patients carry the burden of medical debt, lost income, ongoing medication costs and reduced financial stability. This stress doesn’t stay in the background, it affects treatment adherence, mental health, return to work and overall quality of life. We cannot separate financial health from physical health.

This is where supportive cancer care matters. Early identification of financial distress, access to navigation and social work support and connection to available resources can help reduce burden before it becomes overwhelming. If we want meaningful survivorship, we must address financial toxicity as part of standard cancer care, not an afterthought. At F-U Cancer, we offer educational resources designed to support patients and caregivers in navigating financial toxicity and understanding complex terminology.

🌽 August Recipe of the Month: Summer Corn, Chicken Sausage & Avocado Bowl
Peak summer produce + a satisfying balance of protein, fiber and healthy fats. This colorful bowl combines golden chicken sausage, fresh corn, zucchini, avocado and cheese with a bright lime dressing.
Why we love it for cancer care:
Protein helps support muscle maintenance and recovery, while corn, zucchini and avocado add fiber and a variety of plant nutrients. Avocado and olive oil provide energy-dense unsaturated fats, which can also be helpful when appetite is lower.
Ingredients | 2 servings
• 2 chicken sausages, sliced
• 2 ears fresh corn, kernels removed
• 1 medium zucchini, shredded or cut into thin ribbons
• 1 avocado, diced
• ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
• ¼ cup crumbled cotija or feta
• Fresh cilantro or basil
• Optional: 1 cup cooked quinoa or brown rice
Lime Dressing
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• Juice of 1 lime
• 1 tsp honey
• Garlic powder, salt + pepper to taste
To make: Brown the chicken sausage in a skillet. Add the corn and cook until lightly charred, then toss in the zucchini for the final 1–2 minutes. Divide between bowls and add avocado, tomatoes, cheese and fresh herbs. Whisk together the dressing and drizzle over the top.
Fresh, colorful and built for summer. 🌿

A recent study, “Anxiety, Depression, and Caregiver Burden Among Family Caregivers of Cancer Survivors” highlights just how significant that impact can be. The findings are striking:

- Caregivers experience high levels of burden related to ongoing caregiving demands
- Many report clinically significant symptoms of anxiety and depression
- Higher caregiving burden is directly linked to worse mental health outcomes, including increased emotional distress and reduced overall well-being

In other words, caregiving in cancer is not just physically demanding, it carries a profound psychological load. This is where supportive cancer care must evolve. Caregivers are not secondary to the cancer journey, they are central to it. When caregivers struggle, patients feel the impact too. Yet caregiver needs are often under-assessed, under-supported, and addressed only when crisis emerges. If we want truly patient-centered oncology care, we have to also build caregiver-centered systems of support, which is what we’re doing at F-U Cancer. Because when we care for caregivers, we strengthen the entire cancer care ecosystem.

When a loved one returns to work after cancer, it can feel like a major milestone. But as a caregiver, you often see what others don’t. You see the exhaustion after a full day. The lingering pain. The brain fog. The anxiety about keeping up. The worry that asking for help might be seen as weakness. Returning to work doesn't always mean life has returned to normal.

This is why supportive cancer care is so important. Cancer rehabilitation, symptom management, nutrition and mental health support help survivors manage the lasting effects of cancer while also supporting the families and caregivers walking alongside them. No one should have to navigate the transition back to work alone. Supporting a cancer survivor means supporting the people who support them. Together, we can help survivors return not just to work, but to the lives they want to live, with the resources, confidence, and care they deserve. At F-U Cancer, we provide patients and caregivers with access to trusted resources, education, and supportive care to help them navigate every stage of the cancer journey.
