🌿🌿🌌🦋🐬🌸🌎🌚🌸🐺🐳🌌🌿🌿

For the New Moon 11° 4´ of Virgo @ 9:55 p.m. E.D.T.

Physostegia virginiana

A.k.a. Obedient Plant, Sovereign Flower

~Sovereign flower as a divine vessel for the wild Earth~

Diana lights the way

With autumn on the horizon, we are welcoming in this season's transition with a continued intensity at this New Moon in Virgo. Just when you thought the past few months were not transformative enough, realize we are in a continuation of that energy. The push for new beginnings is in earthy, sensual Virgo. However, as always, she is not alone in the sky. She is also the harbinger luminary for the next Eclipse gateway. You read that right–we have a lunar eclipse at the coming full moon in Pisces on September 18th.

Yesterday, Pluto dipped back into the sign of Capricorn (will stay until late November), and is doing so at its last, anaretic degree of crisis. This will be the last time Pluto will be stationed in this sign in our lifetime! For those who have chart placements near the anaretic degree of any fixed sign may especially feel a deep and unrelenting tension now, forming an equally met transformation. Here, a fully realized interplay of top-down authority vs grassroots personal empowerment will not be ignored.

Consider this patriarchal driven, top-down Capricorn framework having a last ditch effort to maintain authoritarian domination. It may seem like this old way of being is not only winning but out-of-control, and that is a right but temporary assessment. We can clearly see that suppressive, unequal systems inevitably must go for a more harmonized way of being on Earth. With the help of Uranus, a deep seismic shift is beginning to rumble and take shape in the belly of our Mother. Medusa’s fixed star Algol also continues to conjunct Uranus through October, providing a direct message of choosing our sovereign rights in our transformations. Algol does not back down; Algol’s third-eye turns this kind of unwelcomed domination to stone.

Pluto was in Capricorn from 1762-1778, during the sweeping sea-change of the American Revolution, again occuring in January of 2008 to now. This encourages us to reflect on the past 15 years of our lives. What was happening for you in 2008? The land, the country, the world? How did it manifest into your experiences? Where were you nurtured, and where were you starved? Where did this manifest to create these changes and shifts over time?

Ceres, the dwarf planet of harvest and grains, also comes in at 7° of Capricorn forming an exact T-square to the North Node in Aries tonite (Aries the sign of the “Sovereign I am” and at the Harvest New Moon). Algol may join here and harvest some heads. Where can we observe an elitist food system stronghold and how does this relate to our earthy, sensual bodies in its reaction to these control dynamics? Are our bodies healthy as a result? Are we connecting our health to the health of the soil by which sprouts and grows our foods? Where might our need for a revolutionary mindset fit into a grass roots shake-up, shifting the food system back to the power of the people? Is this just food systems that need radical reformation or is this also a shift in what we find nourishing as humans?

This Pluto energy mixes with Uranus going retrograde in stability-loving Ta**us; Rapid, shifting, unexpected changes are like a lightning filled sky; a palpable and inevitable electro-surge. Is this a storm surge forcing us to change something significant or is this the energy surging up our spine into an awakened state of being? It can be both! Uranus relates to the higher mind, so those ready for that kind of rapid movement may receive crown chakra downloads that will serve them (and humanity) for years to come. We are entering a new phase of awareness of all forms by which nurture our beings from a cellular light perspective. And this awareness through destabilization relates to Ta**us: our stability in food, nourishment, and “species survival” through change.

With the New Moon in Virgo, we may see Virgo’s rulership planet Mercury, the maverick messenger of the gods, be the carrier of these Uranian messages. The following day after the New Moon, Mars squares Neptune in Pisces (Mars in Gemini, also ruled by the quick, speed of-light messenger Mercury). This square is also at the last anaretic crisis degree! Mars squaring Neptune has been dubbed as stepping into “the fog of war”; Obstacles. Conflict. Deceit. Suspicion. Scandal. All are typical for this difficult aspect. Simultaneously, Venus will conjunct the South Node of the Moon (in Libra), serving up hard to swallow pills regarding who and what we value, and whether or not these relationship dynamics are in service of our highest calling and the deep wisdom of our Earth Mother.

How does this fit into this deeply earthy, sensual Virgo Moon though? The sign of Virgo is the virgin's pure form of the Maiden; a divine vessel ready to be impregnated. Suited with an intuitive bow and arrow, she is Diana, the chaste moon huntress, goddess of birth and wildlife. She is idealistic, thoughtful, practical, and very grounded. When the “fog of war” rolls in, she works through her ability to see through it, aiming her arrow exactly where it needs to go with her inner vision. At her core, the sign of Virgo is one of service, unconcerning herself with status, top-down authority, or othering. Virgo works as the deep sensual Earth equalizer, caring for all; both hu-man and all walks of life.

I have previously mentioned a quote I love, which I find strongly resonates with Virgo. I have strong Virgo placements, and at times, this has been a kind of mantra for me in my adult years:

“The moment you notice that you are just an instrument of god, the moment you become like a hollow flute, the wind will blow through you, and there will be music” (Dhyan Yogi). Years ago, when I read this, I felt like it was a perfect interpretation for becoming an embodiment of the Virgo divine vessel (of service).

As a late teen, I used to sit evenings and nights in front of a bedroom window that faced my back yard to meditate, often listening to the sounds of wildlife. One spring night, in deep stillness, the wind picked its pace from what seemed like out of nowhere, and blew through the flowering, perfumed bush next to my window, into my room. I felt it move completely through me as presence, answering me. Yet I could only receive this divine presence by being emptied and ready to be of greater service. This is Virgo. This is keeping our sights on service to others by being willing to step out of ego and into embodiment. This new moon asks of us where service fits into the grander vision and dreams for our lives (Neptune in Pisces).

Jupiter also closely conjuncts the dwarf planet Altjira, the in-between place of the sacred dreamtime (of the Aboriginal people). This helps a reorientation into service through expansive dreaming transformations as the timeless meeting place; when the ancestral spirits of the land formed and created our land, our bodies, the plants and animals of the earth.

Altjira is also responsible for the cosmic connections between rebirths of individuals who are considered to be beads on a chain of embodiments of the same enlightened hive-mind. I believe Altjira will be bringing an ever increasing psychic sensitivity to these incarnates, forming a dreamtime psychic connection awakening around the Earth. This increased sensitivity will also help remove those that are not in their integrity, as it will expose those who lie to keep domination over others. When we begin to work more sensitively and empathically, old orders of inequality and control will be removed.

Dwarf planet Salacia is also heavily influencing our bodies as a crystalline prism of light, preparing an activation of aspects of our DNA yet to be expressed. And not just humans but all life; especially those of the sea, where they interact greatly with Salacia’s water-light. There are reports this year of dolphins and whales gathering in unexpected masses. They may know something we are not yet picking up on and are communicating in their own hive-mind arrangements.

The ancient scripts regarding mer-peoples are to note here also. When humans were being made manifest from spirit to dense matter, there were said to be many hybrid trials. Mer-folk were especially adept at water-light. What can we learn? This is an interesting topic for the Virgo/Pisces axis; Virgo the sensual earth (body), Pisces the primordial dreaming (waters). What happens when we access Salacia’s light as embodiment rather than “elsewhere” or “out there”? Maybe as a species, we are beginning to understand our Earth bodies are as much a part of the stars as it is the wild, untamed soil. After all, gravity drew together stardust to form our planet in the first place; the place where we emerge, grow, and go back to cyclically.

Diana, as representing the Virgo Moon, made up a triad with two other Roman deities: Egeria her water nymph midwife, and Virbius, the woodland god (water and earth). She is also a triple aspect goddess, as goddess of the Moon (Luna/Selene) and of the belly Underworld (Hecate/Proserpina). One of her titles is Diana Lucifera , the "light-bearer” moon (Luna), from the verb to shine, lucere. One might argue that Diana is a Salacia water-light goddess as much as she is a woodland walker-huntress. She is both.

Diana is also sometimes invoked as Juno Lucina in childbirth, or as birther/creator. The name Diana stems from Proto-Indo-European *diwyós ('divine, heavenly'), in Ancient Greek dîos (δῖος; 'belonging to heaven, godlike'), and in Sanskrit divyá ('heavenly' or 'celestial').

Unlike Ceres, Diana in her archaic aspects is a goddess of the hunt and wild, untamed places. In contrast, Ceres as an agricultural planet, is much more domestic. What can we deduce from our grass roots need for a food system shift at this New Moon as Diana? Is this shift a literal food or simply what we are nurtured by? How will we grow what nourishes us best? Through cultivation principles or through the wild? Do we grow by sunlight, moonlight, water-light? What is being asked of us?

I consider all of these questions, and its relation to the act of making flower essences. Evidence shows flower essences being made in water, mixing with the sun-light (our star) and moon-light as early as the mythical, golden age, “garden of Eden” of Lemuria and Atlantis some 500,000 years ago; later through the Egyptians, followed by Minoan Crete and ancient India, the Aborigines, and so on. Flower essences are one example of a “food-medicine” made with the healing power of flowers through Salacia’s water-light that energetically and vibrationally shifts our subtle bodies back into alignment to this shared frequency. Hu-mans (and possibly Hu-man hybrids) have possibly utilized this Salacia water-light through flowers in ceremony since the beginning of recorded time.

This brings me to introduce you to the “Sovereign flower” I chose as essence for today, False Dragonhead: Physostegia virginiana. This flower is also called the “Obedient Plant” for its tendency to stay in place once properly re-positioned by hand. The flowers swivel perpendicular to the spike then remain steadfast in this newly chosen place. Its vibration brings us the power to “swivel and re-adjust” in our discoveries, creations, and lives. She strengthens our resolve if we have tendencies to be easily swayed by forces working against this new adjustment. False Dragonhead helps us understand how to stand in our personal sovereignty Dragon as we pivot, and create new space for this inner alchemical dream-power (Pisces) to take steps into grounded reality (Virgo) for a path to New Earth development.

Virgo is the sign of healing, health, and the healer. We may be feeling the need to make some re-adjusments for our health so we can enter the next phase of the Wheel into Libra, when others are let go or let in related to balancing our lives for the dreams we ground and let take root. In the language of flowers, False Dragonhead representscourage to form our own path. Like many plants from the Lamiaceae (Mint) family, they can be rather brave, standing very firm and even stubborn in their sovereign capabilities. They are difficult to budge or remove once they determine their place. One wildflower website states that “not much will compete with it and win, not even Goldenrod.”

The name Physostegia virginiana comes from the greek word physo for “bladder” and stegia for “covering”, referring to the blader-covered shape of its blooms. Its appearance symbolizes the ability to heal ourselves through release. In the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the more ancient healing modalities, the bladder is a yang organ system, directing energy and heat as it is paired with receptive, yin Kidneys. Both urinary tract organs have water association, and are thought to be the place where we carry our deepest of fears. (Heat energy and Water; water-light.) And these fears my friend, are what keeps us from dreaming and creating.

Bladder (and Kidney) issues manifest through the imbalances of our sacral chakra. The sacral chakra, Svadhisthana, means “sweetness” in Sanskrit. Located in the lower abdomen it is associated with our s*xuality and emotions; In its depletion, this chakra highlights our fears in our lack of continuity. Whether it be by actual childbirth or by artistic creation, this energy is concerned with the pleasures, desires, passions and dreams of a life being born. As a literal birth or through creative myth, or vision, what are we birthing? Are we doing this alone or with another/others? Finding our soul tribes may be the best answer for this creation process. As False dragonhead is the energetic symbol of the bladder, it behaves like a Virgo vessel also, asking us where our fears are regarding our creativity and passion; What are we not releasing in order to forge ahead? Where are we not embodying Diana?

Are we being too obedient and sacrificing our sovereignty? Who and what are we being obedient to? Ourselves or others? Higher consciousness? A soul tribe Hive-mind? Where are we placing our sovereign resolve? Our dreams? Will we reach this resolve through the wild or cultivated places?

Diana, the light-bearing virgin moon deity, may be telling us where to “re-virginize” and “re-wild” into a new vision as birthers and creators of a new way of being. She holds the flowers of False Dragonhead as the sovereign power “of vessel”, awaiting the sensual wild fulfillment of the hunt for our soul tribe and the collective tribe of the Earth. Her moon-work shines light in the dark places for our travels. Known as commander of animals, Diana also leads “the wild army”. Hedge men and women, wild witches worked by her night light to ritual with owls, stags and the like into the sacred in-between places for deeper understanding of Gaia. Medicine for healing, for dreams and visions, for birthing and aborting (life and dreams), the hedge riders became an ecstatic extension of their everyday selves as shape-shifter.

Portrayed in her underworld aspect, she sometimes parallels the myth of Proserpina. In mythology, Ceres, the harvest goddess, was Persephone's mother, giving birth to the transformer. After Persephone spends her time in the underworld as punishment for eating forbidden Pomegranate seeds, the world was divided into the four seasons. Diana, as an aspect of Persephone, may be asking us to consider our creations via the skills and celebration of the transitions of our Earth Mother, which comprises this lesson (The ever turning Wheel of the Year). As she emerges from the belly of the underworld, Diana becomes the transformed wild, untamed goddess of the sensual Earth herself.

Ways by which we can harmonize our beings with the wild Earth in her seasonal expressions helps put us in the same frequency as our own planet by which we come from, so that we may “hear” these needs collectively; creating a unified vision around the world. This may seem like simple beliefs that have transcended time and culture, and you are right. But in our modernity, how many of us feel separate from fully living in this harmony? What lessons are we lacking by disengaging from the wild and untamed sovereign creatures we were meant to be? How does this prevent us from forming collective soul tribes in service to the greater collective of all life?

The patterns, rhythms, and frequencies of our planets and stars are clearly showing us that dominating systems are old, worn, and played out. The last gasping breath of this old way of being is in its death-throes, blind to its inevitable loss. It will be up to us as individuals and as a collective whole to determine the new trajectory for hu-mans amidst all walks of life, which if we pay attention, may be leading the way for us. Listen to the whale songs, the crickets, the field mouse, the breeze in the trees, the ocean waves and the deer. Are their patterns shifting? Are you shifting into them? Are you forming your own hybrid languages and skin?

Many blessings as we invite wild feet in this collective shift;

Merry New Moon to all–🌚🌸🌿🌌🐳

08/29/2024

I have been missing the coolness of the Earth; the satiated ground, the springs, streams, creeks and rivers flowing. I have been yearning for the cool breeze and the light rain. I will not deny telling you the part of myself that loathes this time of late summer when it feels as though the heat is relentless and burning. I can feel the soils need for moisture, the plants as they tend to droop.

As my body is made of water also, I have always felt extra sensitive to the parched land as my own. As I passed through a few different locations this past week, I found each place with little rain or flow. The intense heat index had my skin pink, the path dusty and irritating to the lungs. Most mycelium knew better than to push out their fruits. “Just wait–everything beautiful happens in due time”. Keep walking.

In this stillness, there are always signs of hope and survival along the way. The bare-knuckled need to defy all odds could still be found cheerfully waving in meadows, dotting forrest floors, in nooks and crannies of cool boulders and poking out of carpeted moss. Some things thrive in these conditions. Some things endure them and seek where the earth traps the water.

Huge trees thinking they were untouchable fell dry in their mighty size, becoming brittle, crashing to the land in a thousand splinters. I guess their time of reckoning had come. That’s okay; soon they will be fed on by beautiful patches of slime molds, mycenas, honey and cauliflower mushrooms.

These late August days filled themselves with the prairie and meadow plants, thinned out but colorful.. Brushes of Goldenrod, Tall Ironweed, Wingstem, Joe Pye W**d, Elephant’s Foot, Thistle, Ragweed and River Oats all congregated matching the strength of the sun. Eastern and Spicebush Swallowtails flitted amongst them in their pleasured dance.

Walking further along, the dotting bushes of Multiflora rose shifted their hips from green to red. These necessary forrest shifts of fruit and nut calls to our place to gather abundance for the upcoming seasonal transition. The trees of the lands talk this language also; Sumac found hanging lazily amongst spiky American Chestnut burrs, Persimmons grouped in threes going out of green. The heady scent of Spicebush berry surrounded my body as I waded through parched paths, sweatily brushing up against its leaves, taking the aromatic small red berries to my fingertips and teeth.

As I let myself feel fully into this ripening, the path widened and opened down the ravine revealing Oyster mushroom shields of light cupping the open air. They came back to flush along a downed tree and greet me with protective nourishment. I could also see otherworldly fantastic oranges nearly assaulting my eyes against the dry landscape as Jack in the Pulpit berry stood erect next to small flushes of Chicken of the Woods.

Looking down, I got a good giggle to see two Eastern Box Turtles in the middle of having s*x. Something I have never seen before! It was beautiful, awkward, and showed a kind of determined goal. This was especially funny to me, as earlier in the week I accidentally interrupted a (human) couple doing the same at a swamp, driven by their wild impulses for intimacy. What can I say, onlookers beware: when love is ripe, it can be playfully unabashed without care for visibility!

As I watched the pair, I considered how they courted not just each other, but the interplay of how they connected best despite needing protective shells. As I watched them, I marveled at how they still figured it out, despite the challenges.

There’s a movie quote I’ve always fancied which says “The world moves for love; it bows before it in awe”. I cannot say if either couple were moved by love or instinct, but finding the turtle totem in the form of two was really something. A kind of raw continuation; an instinct for survival is often what makes the world go ‘round. When two energies join to ensure such an act, a mutualistic vision can be formed. This is the place of dreams.

This encounter brought me into remembering how the turtle symbolizes a bridge between the upper and lower worlds, the water world and the land. As a totem for a walker between worlds, what would it mean for these turtles to come together? Ancient Chinese cultures consider “stacked turtles” to mean longevity and luck. As a symbol for individuals that understand how to exist in both elements, what does it mean for two visions to collide and share? I kept these thoughts with me as I headed closer to the creek.

In lower elevations near the water, things changed. Finally a bit of relief! Canadian Wood Nettle appeared in flower, alongside healthy patches of Great Blue Lobelias, Hairy Wood Mint, and juicy stalks of Poke. The water looked so tempting, I threw my bag off, descended to the creek, and walked in waist deep. As I let myself be cooled by the flow of the running waters, I relaxed into a meditation: The Earth at my feet. The Waters surrounding. The Air I breathed in and out, and the Fire-light of day hitting my skin. I smiled in complete and total contentment. Nothing was going to take me out of this place, or so I thought–

Just then I heard a rumble and crash! It was a young deer, running down to the creek to do the same. The rest of the crew- a large doe and two fawns looked on from above but did not come down. It was just he and I. He was not afraid, quiet, and unassuming. I joined him in meditation, and my energy shifted further into stillness. As we both waded, he carried me fully away from the ruthless fire of the prairieland. A breeze ever so momentarily joined us; it lifted my scent downstream to him; of spicebush and sweat that I had rubbed into my hair.

As I left and rejoined the path, he did not spook and run. He began walking parallel with me from down below, continuing on in the water. The last I saw of him he paused and looked up at me. I thanked him and took my forward steps. Just after, I looked up to find Elder in berry; a powerful remedy to the lungs. The stems of the berries spreading out like cilia calling for the inner alchemy of the breath of life.

In old and middle English, the Anglo Saxon word deer (der or dēor) simply means animal. In Germanic, it has its root in “tier”, meaning wild animal, which is also found as the meaning in the Sanskrit root “mriga”.

They have a four chambered stomach, digesting things in a step by step process. They are excellent sprinters and swimmers and maintain their place with an ear cupped, rotating to sense any danger. Their antlers grow behind their eyes, encouraging heightened perceptions and vision for clarity at a distance. They walk in this awareness which actually gives them the ability to relax.

In Buddhism, it is often the deer that is seen as Buddha’s guide to engage all living things, not just humans. Buddha spent much of his time in his teachings at the deer park; a return to innocence within wildness. In symbology, the doe and the buck flank the Dharma Wheel representing unity of all life and skillfulness. In the Jataka tales, the Buddha learns of his previous incarnations that were both human and animal. The lessons of the deer taught freedom, self respect, compassion for self and others, and forgiveness.

The Buddha spent 6 years along the banks of a river. In one particular Jataka deer tale, we are left asking who was actually the hunter and the hunted. This particular deer I encountered was just old enough to be out of its spots, yet not old enough to have antlers developed. In its gentleness, it was vulnerable. Yet in each situation of vulnerability, I considered how the opportunity to learn from danger is given–.

I stopped and gathered the Elderberry along the path before I left the water’s edge. In Druidic Ogham oracle, the Elder (called “Ruis”) is one of the three trees serving as Guardian. Also a symbol of longevity, strength, and immunity from particular dangers. Ruis (ᚏ) is the fifteenth letter of the Ogham alphabet, derived from ruise "red" or "reddening". The kennings refer to the reddening of the face caused by intense emotion, and medieval glossators also refer to the practice of reddening the cheeks with the juice of plants.

Its Proto-Indo-European root was *h₁reudʰ- 'red'. This face reddening is often likened to both anger or love: the “glow of anger” as well as “the most intense blushing” of love and adjoining acts of pleasure (tindem rucci - "most intense blushing", rúamnae drech - "reddening of faces", bruth fergae - "glow of anger"). Often we can observe our expressions in self-love in addition to defending our right to who and what we love as anger. These emotions can sometimes be seen arising together.

In Celtic mythology, Ruis (Elder) symbolizes a time of endings and beginnings, with close associations to autumn. The Elder, along with Hawthorne, is one of the most quintessential trees guarding the fairy realm. She is also called “Queen of the Herbs” and “The Witch’s tree”, assisting the hedgewalker through the dark places. Elder is listed as one of the 7 fairy herbs of great power to those who know how to honor and serve her. It is said that witches would anoint their eyes with the sap of the Elder to enter into the realm of the Sidhe to receive vision. With its white flowers in spring and dark berries in fall, the Elder is known for helping one “hedge walk” simultaneously in the light and dark realms of the psyche.

Robert Graves marked the tree as “The tree of doom” for its parallels the dark aspects of the Mother Goddess, so sometimes she is linked to any dark goddess such as the Morrigan, Hecate or Kali. These dark aspects were the necessary hag for survival and timelessness. Elder here is a protector of the in-between realm, where fairies come to support those in need of survival and immunity from danger. She is the protector force in the “Cauldron of rebirth”.

Elder is both a diaphoretic and diuretic, and can be utilized for the treatments of wounds and bruises. She is an immuno-stimulant, anti inflammatory, anti viral, and anti bacterial so she is often called upon to rebuild our systems from colds, flu, viral and bacterial infections. She can also help with ulcers, skin issues, and the scorch of the summer sun. She has the ability to de-cloak invaders so our immune system is alarmed of the intrusion.

What a powerful combination: the water, deer and the elder. A much ado on cleansing, protecting, and embracing all aspects of the self, while walking in the in-between place. I hope you consider what plants, animals, and elements assist you during times that feel tirelessly dry, hot, and relentlessly oppressive. Call upon these spirits during these times; they may lead you to the water and the cauldron. Find the fruit that droops and hangs for gathering an aspect of you yet to be explored.

Late summer blessings, 🦌🌿🦋🍇🌊🐢
