One of our favorite interventions lately has been the “Music Bracket”. We ask patients to enter their favorite songs to go head to head. Whichever song gets the majority group vote after one minute of play time, moves onto the next round.

Interestingly enough, this intervention has fostered some awesome conversation about personal biases and how they form our perspectives and preferences.

One group ended before we could find out what would’ve won between “Man in The Mirror” by Michael Jackson, “American Pie” by Don McLean and “Till I Collapse” by Eminem. Who do you think should’ve won?

A therapist of ours LOVES collecting vintage records. Their favorite summer activity, after finishing a session at a local community center, is walking across the street to check out the local vintage record store 🎵☀️

Clearly they’ve got a thing for Broadway. Do you collect Vinyl Records?

👋🏾 y’all!

I have to tell you about Ann Morgan.

Ann Morgan was a college student a few years ago when she traveled to Frankfort to lobby with a group committed to music therapy. Her group stopped by my office because I was the Primary Sponsor of a music therapy bill.

Ann Morgan stayed in the back of the group observing our interactions. We connected this past Sunday — years later — when she stopped by Vernon Lanes for “Karaoke with the Candidate” and to celebrate the birthday of our mutual friend, Marianne Zickuhr.

Well, Ann Morgan is now a music therapist and our connection has come full circle.

Our interns Natalie and Nia had an awesome time singing and learning together with the children at the YMCA! From a distance music therapy may look like just singing songs and having fun (which we do!) However, music therapists go through extensive education and training to create treatment plans the help every individual reach the goals that are most important to them. These kiddos are not only having fun, they also learning important social and emotional skills like impulse control and sustained attention span, as well as basic academic skills that build a foundation for learning math and reading!

Our MT-BC, Ann-Morgan, had a wonderful time with her clients at yesterday. Every client was given a blank post-it note to write down a short phrase or word that they wanted to use in the lyrics they wrote together as a group (what the clients provided is on the left and the finished lyrics are on the right). After completing the lyrics, Ann-Morgan accompanied one of the clients on her guitar while they improvised a melody to go along with the lyrics. At the end, the clients engaged in a discussion that acknowledged that this exercise is something that they can use for emotional expression outside of therapy groups. One client stated, “I like how you start small with specific ideas or words that you know you want to use, and then you build the song around them. It makes lyric writing feel a lot more accessible”. As Music Therapists, we LOVE hearing our clients voice understanding that music is an accessible and powerful outlet for them to express themselves ☺️

Our interns Nia and Natalie had so much fun at the YMCA today. LCTPS has been providing services to YMCA Northeast Child Development Center for almost 2 years now! We work with children from the ages of 3 months all the way to 5 years old. With this population we use music to reinforce basic educational skills, social skills, emotional skills, communication skills, motor skills and cognitive skills.

Today at Bridgehaven Mental Health, our MT-BC utilized “Free Me” by to facilitate a discussion on how setting boundaries is a form of self-love. Many of the clients gained a new perspective on the necessary act of setting boundaries that took the guilt out of it, and added in a strong sense of pride that comes with valuing and protecting your inner peace.

“Free Me” is linked in our stories. Give it a listen today to remind yourself that your feelings matter. Take care of yourself ♥️

We would like to introduce another one of our interns, Nia! Read more about her below:

“Hi, I’m Nia! I am currently finishing up my bachelors degree in music therapy from The University of Louisville. I love seeing the look on our clients faces while they connect to the music we utilize in sessions and seeing the benefits they get from participating music therapy.

When I’m not playing music with our clients, I am playing bass guitar in our church band. Outside of music I enjoy reading, relaxing at home with my dogs and cat, and playing board games with friends and family.

We would like to introduce another one of our interns, Lizvette! Read on to learn a little more about her Music Therapy journey:

“Hello! I’m lizvette! I am getting my bachelors degree in music therapy from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown Pennsylvania. I chose music therapy because I wanted to combine my passion for music with my love for helping others. The more I learned about the benefits of music therapy and saw it implemented in the real world, the more I fell in love with the field! Outside of my internship, I teach private piano lessons and I walk dogs for people in my neighborhood. I love spending my free time with family and friends.”

Song writing is an intervention that we love to use in our individual and group therapy sessions. In an individual session (seen in the first picture) songwriting is used as a healthy outlet for emotional expression, an opportunity for bonding between family members, as a gift to give to loved ones, and many other reasons. In a group (seen in the second and third picture) song writing can be used for increasing group cohesion, to celebrate a holiday/season, or to educate the group about a potential emotional expression coping skill that they can utilize on their own.

It’s Intern Hour here at LCTPs! Our Interns Natalie and Nia are discussing their weekly assignments and what their take aways were. Their assignments were:
1. Finding tips and tricks to improve authentic therapeutic talk in sessions
2. Forming a personalized description of what Music Therapy is, what we do, and why it works!
We have loved seeing these girls continuously progress in their knowledge and their implementation of interventions with the different populations we serve.
