Norton Children’s has named a new physician to lead its cancer institute.

Michael J. Ferguson, M.D., will serve as chief of Norton Children’s Cancer Institute and division chief of the University of Louisville School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics Division of Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. In these roles, Dr. Ferguson will lead Norton Children’s team of physicians and staff dedicated to treating pediatric cancer and blood disorders throughout the region. He also will be tasked with leading the vision for researching, developing and providing access to new treatments for pediatric cancer.

Dr. Ferguson said, "I am honored and humbled to be the next division chief of pediatric hematology and oncology for Norton Children's. The amazingly talented faculty and staff has helped transform Norton Children’s into a shining beacon of hope for so many patients living with blood disorders and cancer. There is an incredible opportunity at Norton Children's to grow our research endeavors, open cutting-edge clinical trials, and build specialty clinics to meet the needs of the most complex patients. I am excited for this opportunity, as I believe we can develop Norton Children's into a national destination center for treatment of blood disorders and cancer in children, adolescents and young adults by providing the highest level of comprehensive care through innovative treatments, research and clinical trials."

The Dance Big Red 2024 Executive Board made a visit to Norton Children’s Hospital for their annual retreat! The Western Kentucky University student leadership spent time learning about the impact they are making and planning for Dance Big Red 2024.

Dance Big Red is a student-led fundraising event benefiting Norton Children’s Hospital. Since 2015, Dance Big Red has raised nearly $700,000 for pediatric cardiovascular services and pediatric cancer care.

We greatly appreciate the WKU Hilltoppers commitment to supporting patients from across the state in need of specialized pediatric care.

🎉Applause is in order for Brooke Smith, RN, our Daisy Award recipient! 🌼

A heartfelt nomination came from a brave teenager at Norton Children's Cancer Institute, highlighting Brooke's uplifting presence. Here is a snippet of Brooke's nomination:
"When I arrived to the hospital I was crippled with anxiety. Brooke restored my self-confidence with her continuous display of empathy, not only to me but to my mom and my sisters."

Brooke, your dedication to our patients shines brightly. Cheers to your wonderful work! 👏

Meet Stephen, a brave little fighter with an incredible story.

Stephen was born July 2, 2021, and at two weeks old he was admitted to the Norton Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit with failure to thrive. He was quickly diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of inherited disorders that affect the adrenal glands, and it affects boys and girls. CAH is caused by mutations in the genes that produce the enzymes required for the adrenal glands to synthesize hormones from cholesterol.

Stephen’s body does not produce cortisol or aldosterone, and it does not retain sodium. When he was admitted to Norton Children’s Hospital, he was severely dehydrated and lethargic, and his sodium and electrolyte levels were at zero.

Today, Stephen is a happy and active 3-year-old, undergoing regular lab tests and living his best life. Stephen’s mom said, “We will always love Norton Children’s for all the things the team did for our son. The Norton Children’s team is so sweet and caring to patients and their parents. You made us feel at home away from home, and we will always be grateful for that.”
