Do you know what it takes to get a WAGS pet therapy team to a visit?
Dogs must be well-groomed- whether they weigh 5 lbs or 150! A bath, clean ears and feet, trimmed toenails, and fresh breath are a must! Our people clean up too!
The day before a visit, teams also have to make sure they have a bag of supplies packed, the proper equipment (a four foot leash and appropriate collar), and have arranged for the visit ahead of time. We do not just "drop in!" We have to be invited through the website.
The day of the visit might involve as much as a two-hour drive to some locations, but most are within 20-30 minutes. Teams that visit places like the airport have to navigate the parking garage on a sweltering hot day or a frigid cold one, pick up gate passes, go through TSA, and then walk the entire concourse! Our teams can get 15,000 steps in one visit!
Other teams have to go through additional training and CE at places like hospitals, get TB tests, navigate class changes and know how to present their pets knowing that not all people are comfortable around dogs and cats.
This is all in addition to the 6 months of training WAGS requires!

We want our teams to be safe and prepared for each and every visit. The teams you see at places like the airport are really well-trained and love their jobs! Their humans are dedicated to bringing joy to everyone!

Over the holiday break a humane educational camp was held at Bellarmine University! Project Pet teaches children how to avoid accidents with pets by teaching them signs of stress and fear in dogs, cats, and small animals. This winter, 6 children read stories about dogs and cats with WAGS teams! Pictured here are Millie, Callie, and JuJu!

Project Pet is also held every summer! We will share news in late Spring!

Each month at our meeting we always have a time of training. We call it Wags Wisdom and Continuing Education. Sometimes it looks like this! Linda, Martha and Julie were demonstrating the correct way to enter our meeting to keep our dogs safe and then an incorrect way.

WAGS Pet Therapy of Kentucky, Inc. goes to Muhammad Ali International Airport and greets travelers! We all know how stressful it is to fly- but imagine if you are watching your child go off to a war zone or you are a refugee arriving in the US for the first time. What if you are Coming home to say farewell to your mom, who unexpectedly passed away? Watching your dad take his Honor Flight after his service in Korea? Sending your child to see his custodial parent in another state? Our members have all reported very touching moments with distressed and joy filled people at the airport. Another reason I am so proud to be a part of this organization! This is Maggie, Bugsy, Patches, and Ariel sharing their sweetness!
Join us! We meet this Saturday! www.kywags.org

A wonderful story from GRRAND’s newsletter

Callie
Callie is a Great Pyrenees who was adopted from GRRAND in 2017 by Tom and Julie. From the day that they met Callie, which was two days before they officially adopted her, they have been completely in love with her and have always wanted to provide her with the best life possible. Callie goes on at least three walks a day, rain or shine, and her owners noticed her love for people while on these adventures. They saw this as a great opportunity to share Callie’s loving personality with others, so they got involved with WAGS Pet Therapy of Kentucky in 2019. “All I have to do is *touch* her canvas “WAGS Bag” or fill her water bottle, and she starts dancing! She loves to go, and do, and be petted by as many people as possible. (There are at least four other Great Pyrenees in the WAGS organization – their calm demeanor and heart for people can make them great therapy dog candidates.)”

When Julie was asked about her most memorable visit with Callie, she responded, “The one visit that stands out the most in my mind was a “routine” visit at Barret last year. In between groups of 8th graders, their presentation coach suggested that Callie and I sit near a corridor and let any passing students have a chance to pet her. There was one student who came back FOUR times between classes. Callie would gaze into his eyes, touched her nose to his, and really just connected with him on another level. I made sure to let him know that she doesn’t do that with just everyone, and that he was special to her. His whole face just lit up. I later mentioned it to the coach and the coach’s mouth kind of fell open. “Really? I am SO GLAD – that kid is going through some STUFF.” He looked away, and back to me, and repeated, “That kid is going through some STUFF. I’m so glad you were here for him.” I still get goosebumps, just thinking about it. I hope that kid is there when we come back this year. I thought I was doing this for Callie’s benefit. Seems I was a bit mistaken.”

Thank you to Tom and Julie for sharing Callie’s pet therapy experience with us – we hope that others will feel inspired to do the same with their dog.
