(3)

At the age of two he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. It severely limited his mobility and drastically affected his sense of balance. After heel cord surgery and physical therapy, he was able to walk by the age of five. He was raised to never say, “I can’t.” He started his own business at the age of eighteen. However, by the age twenty-three, he had seen that business fail and was a full time me

mber of the workforce. During this transition, Paul had neglected his physical therapy and health in general. He found himself overweight and having trouble walking. To remedy this decline in his health, Paul began practicing Shaolin Do Chinese Martial Arts at the age of twenty-four. Having been a martial arts enthusiast all of his life, Paul soon found kung fu to be a wonderful form of both physical and mental therapy. Five years later, Paul was healthier, stronger, and taller than he had ever been in his life. He has also become a respected competitor in several martial arts tournaments. In 2002, Paul added kettlebells to his workout. This simple change caused a remarkable increase in his physical abilities and his fitness level. Paul decided that he needed to share all of the benefits he had gained from martial arts practice and fitness training with other disabled people. He began working with this population as a Recreation Assistant. His stellar job performance earned him a promotion to Rehabilitation Assistant. Paul then worked as a Quality Living Assistant. His continually excellent job performance and experience led to him being certified by the Kentucky Department of Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities as a CPI Trainer of Direct Care staff. Paul then worked as an Assistant Case Manager. During these years he also continued to learn and grow as a martial artist and athlete. Throughout his work with the Special Needs Population, Paul’s unique combination of personal and professional experiences has enabled him to help many people with widely differing circumstances and capabilities. The benefits gained by individuals in his, Shaolin A.R.Ts program have been witnessed not only by the participants themselves but by family, friends, care providers, doctors and therapists. Hey my people! I know we all get asked to “like” and “share” stuff ALL the time!

The thing is, it’s VERY important for a new business or a new band to get as many “likes” “follows” and “shares” as possible!

It’s what makes the algorithm gods happy and drives more people to their products and music.

So, I ask ALL of my over 1,000 friends to PLEASE go “like” “follow” and “share” BENT MONK! Thanks VERY much! Love y’all!

Regardless of what “style” of martial arts you choose to pursue, all martial arts schools should have some basic similarities.

After almost thirty years of training, here’s what I learned makes a good martial arts school.

1. Fit, knowledgeable instructors with readily verifiable, well documented credentials and obvious martial skills.

Just because someone has a building, a uniform and a black belt, that does NOT automatically mean that they are a qualified and capable instructor.

If the person is obviously in poor physical condition and claims to be “certified” by some master you’ve never heard of before… I’d do a little more research and comparison shopping before you make a commitment.

2. A primary focus on real world applications of the material that is taught.

A real world fight is going to likely involve; punching, kicking, wrestling and grappling in some combination. Therefore, ANY art you train should provide you with solid fundamentals in the offensive use of and the defense against those basic components.

If you go and observe a class and don’t see at least SOME bag work, physical conditioning and sparring that pressure tests the skills learned… I’d keep looking. Also, if they don’t spar with any contact while simultaneously claiming that their techniques are “too deadly” for most regular situations… leave immediately.

3. An openness to learning new techniques and a respect for other styles and practioners, as well as a willingness to “cross hands” or “trade leather” with anyone up for the fun of it.

Martial arts are a very diverse and constantly evolving compilation of techniques and people.

However, one thing above all separates the real martial arts from the charlatans… effectiveness. If it works, it works.

The ring, the octagon, the street… they DO NOT lie. If you visit a school that doesn’t spar with contact and discourages regularly testing your skills in some way against other styles… ask yourself why and keep looking for a place to train.

ANY style that is truly the “absolute best in the world” should have NO problem proving anywhere, any time.

Also, be wary of any style that has a LOT of “belt levels” and “belt tests. There’s also a regularly increasing “test fee” that comes with every new belt or stripe.

Profit isn’t a dirty word, bills have to be paid and people have to eat, but hitting Mom and Dad in the wallet for an extra $50-$100 every other month in addition to tuition and supply fees is more than a little bit shady. Opening a daycare with 100 kids, putting them in karate uniforms and calling yourself “sensei” doesn’t make you a martial arts instructor. ”Buyer beware”.

All “good schools” of ANY combat art have a good “feel” in them. You’ll know it when you feel it. ALWAYS trust your gut!

Happy training and much love!!!

Do not fall into the trap of “appearance based” fitness. Just because someone is skinny does NOT necessarily mean they are healthy.

Eat a healthy diet free of refined sugar and processed foods. Do some type of physical activity that gets you breathing hard and sweaty for at least thirty minutes, three times a week.

Go to your doctor and get your stats checked regularly.

If you feel good and your doctor says you’re healthy, don’t worry about what size pants you wear.

Very interesting.
