Labor Day calls us to remember all those who labor - those from years before and all those who labor today, and many without ceasing. But Labor Day, as with the pattern of the creation story, should also remind us that labor requires rest.
Good work, requires rest.
It is one of the ways we embody God’s image.
Unfortunately labor and rest are not easily found or balanced in this life. May we be people who do what we can to embrace this invitation, as well as work to create fair systems that allow all people to as well.

A new year has begun and the endless “improvement” posts and messages of needing to be better, or of how terrible you are, inherently sinful, or more subtly: “become the best you,” flood our feeds.
The new year often holds so much pressure and weight. I’m here to give you permission (though you don’t need it, but maybe will find it helpful to hear) to release those messages and lean into a different one.
Lean into the message that you are good. That’s it. You’re good.
Already.
Inherently, good.
Intentionally created good.
A reflection of the good God who made every person in God’s own image; and we have the continual invitation to lean into that goodness.
We don’t have to follow a new wellness plan or diet, make it to the gym every day, journal each night, pray a particular way, or make a list of goals a mile long.
We. Are. Good.

Now, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to improve or that we don’t need to grow anymore, but rather our goodness doesn’t rely upon our own actions or doing things perfectly. Our created state is good.
Not perfect. But good.
I don’t know about you, but that feels like a breath of fresh air to me.

Release the pressure.
Release the stress.
Release the expectations.
And instead, fall more deeply into who you already are.

And if you struggle to believe it,
or if you don’t know where to start,
that’s okay, too. You can begin even with the smallest step, like simply repeating to yourself “I am good.”
We practice our way into things, after all.

And if you need someone to partner with you in this journey, I’m here.
Know that you are not alone.

You are good.
You are good.
You are good.

God the Christ came in flesh.
Our God is not distant, not unfamiliar with the messiness of being human.
God became flesh in the person of Jesus, chose to became human and live a fully human life to be with us (that is what Emmanuel means after all) and to show us a better way - a way of love, of peace, of joy, and hope.
As we celebrate the birth of the Christ (the messy, embodied, human birth), may we also choose to be embodiments of the God who valued humanity so much that we get to know what God would do if God were human.
May we celebrate this day as we choose to be fully human the way God became fully human - by being present, being love, being light, being for those on the margins, being peace, being joy {to the world}.
Merry Christmas, friends ♥️

Over 80 school shootings this year and countless other gun related deaths, not to mention all the places around the world riddled with gunfire as a result of war.
Lord, have mercy.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Bless the bodies,
Bruised and marred from stampeding footsteps outrunning guns.
Bless the bodies,
Crying out in fear, or holding back breaths as the gunman draws near.
Bless the bodies of the mother doubled over with grief, the father whose child is lost in a heap.
Bless all the bodies who stand in the way, protecting the children and leading them safe,
out of the chaos,
giving a chance,
selflessly choosing, despite all their fear, to protect and to love as that gunman draws near.
Bless all the bodies, stunned by the terror,
Bless all the bodies, whose tears never end,
Bless all the bodies, whose laughter won’t reach the ears of their loved ones ever again.
Each body is sacred, each person so loved. Yet, somehow we continue to favor the guns.
How dare we value “rights” over people. How dare we allow another news break.
With each gunshot we lose a glimpse of the Creator, with each breath cut short another image of God falls.
What a mockery of our beautiful humanity, of the sacredness of every life.
Bless each body, O God,
and convict us with the weight of each lost life.

It’s been a minute since my last post, and apparently I decided to make my reappearance with a political post 😅 Check out a few thoughts on political engagement as an embodied practice at wholly-good.com in the blog section. Be kind to yourself and others as we head into Election Day ♥️

To humanize is to see the goodness,
the image bearing nature,
the potential in others.
We so often use human as a dirty word - “well, I’m only human” - but humanity at our core are good, and as image bearers we are MOST HUMAN when we embody that divine nature. God came to earth in flesh after all.
So when we humanize may we seek to see each person’s belovedness and look for the ways they may be reflecting God’s goodness in the midst of the brokenness and beauty of their human experience. And in it all may we remember that humanity is a good part of them, and me, and you.
You are human. And I am, too.
Let’s be more human together.

On this fourth of July, may we recall those who did not receive liberation that day, and may we seek to be people who work together with God and each other in the continual work of liberation.

May we follow the lead of the God who gives freedom to God’s people;
The God of Moses who freed the Israelites from slavery.
The God of Ruth and Naomi who freed them
from their sorrow and poverty.
The God of the woman with a bleeding condition who was freed
from her disease.
The God of healed lepers, calmed storms, and empty graves.
The God of life who defeated death, and rose on the third day, bringing the promise of new life for all.
May we join in God’s work of liberation, for it is not only for us,
but for all people.
We are not truly free until we are all free.

It’s been minute since I’ve posted, and I’m hoping to be a bit more present on here soon 😅 But I wanted to hop on and share a small bit of what I’ve been up to this week as I had the honor of presenting a workshop at Pepperdine University’s lectures! And of course that means I talked about embodied spiritual formation!
Getting to share with people about the goodness of our whole selves as made good and in God’s image and how we are invited (as our whole selves) to be spiritually formed is always a joy. I’m grateful for the opportunity and for the connections made throughout the week. And! There will be a recording of my presentation, so once that link is available I’ll be sure to share it. Until then, and as always, I’m here to be a partner in your and/or your community’s journey of spiritual formation, so reach out, ask questions, add an embodied practice to your routine, and remember that you, in your whole self, are good. ✌🏻💚

Love is born today,
In the birthed babe in Bethlehem
In the love in a mother’s gaze
In a father’s caring embrace
In a friend’s quick text to check in
In laughter that moves you to tears
In the joy of a child’s wonder
In the sacrifice of time, of money, of energy, of life
In every moment we give love
In every moment we receive it
Love is born today
Embodied in Christ, in you, in me.

Merry Christmas! May we all embody Christ’s love today and every day.
