Are you trying to figure out if there truly are benefits of Hyperbaric Therapy?

There are several benefits associated with intermittent exposure to hyperbaric doses of oxygen. Oxygen partial pressures in the blood can be elevated to 2000 mmHg at the tissue level.

Either alone, or more commonly combined with other medical and surgical procedures, these mechanisms serve to enhance the healing process of treatable conditions.

Halfway through 2021 and we are doing all we can to continue keeping our patients safe!

Hyperbaric Physicians of Georgia are taking extra steps every day to ensure the safety and well-being of both patients and staff in all of our clinics as a result of this pandemic.

We utilize special ultraviolet (UV-C) lights to that are a proven and effective way to neutralize potential viruses and bacteria in our clinical spaces. Prolonged exposure to UV lights works to deactivate the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens which destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease.

These UV lights are utilized daily and always activated in unoccupied spaces for a minimum of 30 minutes per room.

How long does hyperbaric oxygen therapy last?

Therapy lasts 20-40 sessions, administered daily.
A single therapy session lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours.
During each therapy, the patient has several “air breaks,” which adds to the therapy time.

They breathe regular room air for a few minutes when prompted by the therapist.

This helps reduce the risk of oxygen toxicity.

Types of Hyperbaric Chambers: Overview & Insights

How much pressure is used in a hyperbaric chamber?

According to the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, hyperbaric therapy must be administered at a minimum of 1.4 atmospheric absolute (ATA) to be therapeutic. Because of this, simply being immersed in 100% oxygen does not qualify as hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

The maximum pressure for safe HBO therapy is 3 ATA. This level almost completely meets the tissue’s resting requirements for oxygen supply. This is why it can be such an excellent alternative when the body struggles to deliver oxygen via its normal pathways.

During your therapy, you’ll be coached by your hyperbaric therapist on “getting to pressure.” This involves comfortably popping your ears to help acclimate to the pressure. The experience is similar to driving up a tall mountain or climbing altitude in an airplane.

All hyperbaric chambers for hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy are pressurized vessels. These chambers come in several different versions but all deliver more oxygen to the body at greater than 1 atmosphere of pressure.

HBO therapy has two main components. First, it’s the administration of nearly 100% oxygen. Secondly, atmospheric pressure is brought to higher-than-normal levels. These two factors create a unique environment. It drives oxygen into the tissues and helps stimulate many critical processes in the body.

Treating Long Term Effects of Radiation with Hyperbaric Oxygen

How Can Radiation Damage Be Helped With Oxygen Therapy?

After your cancer radiation treatments are finally finished, the last thing you want is more treatments for health issues. Unfortunately, radiation therapy frequently comes with a host of problems, even after radiation has been complete for some time.

Most radiation-related issues resolve on their own. Yet many people suffer from late-term radiation injuries. An injury is officially late-term when it’s present at least six months after the last radiation treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a prime treatment for long-term radiation. About a third of people receiving the treatment are receiving it for that very problem.

Tissue damage from radiation (also known as soft tissue radionecrosis) is one of the thirteen diagnoses, according to the Medicare Coverage Database, approved for HBOT treatment.

Top 6 Side Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

When you’re in a pressurized capsule…how does your body react?

When many people learn about HBOT, they have immediate concerns. Do therapy sessions in a pressurized chamber do anything bad to your body?

It’s a good question.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has minimal side effects when performed at a professional facility.

In one year-long study, side effect rates were only 0.4%. In that same study, half of all adverse side effects were ear pain. A quarter of the side effects were claustrophobia.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Ear Problems: Your Questions Answered

Here’s how to help avoid middle ear barotrauma & more in hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

If you’ve ever had the discomfort of an ear infection or a plane that dropped altitude too fast, you know how painful ear pressure can be.

In a pressurized chamber, it’s no exception.

Your body is skilled at adjusting to pressure changes. Normally, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is not painful on the ears.

Thankfully, complications are very uncommon. However, about half of the side effects that are reported during hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are related to ear pain. Ear barotrauma remains the most common complication of HBOT.

Oxygen Therapy FAQ's 👇

Is there any reason I should cancel a treatment?
Yes, there are a few instances you shouldn’t complete your scheduled HBOT session.3 Call your facility and ask to verify. Be sure to let them know if you’ve had:

An ear or eye surgery
A sinus or upper respiratory infection
An ear infection
Low blood sugar
Caffeine or ni****ne use
An implanted device

Oxygen Therapy FAQ's 👇

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy hurt?
Normal HBO therapy should not be painful. There is a risk of lung or ear trauma, but this is why your therapist will transition your pressure slowly. They’ll also coach you with exercises that will ease ear pressure while you go up and down in pressure.

This transition should not be uncomfortable. Patients describe the sensation as going up in an airplane or going down in a submarine. This is why HBOT sessions are frequently called “dives.”

To comfortably adjust, your therapist will teach you various techniques to clear your ears, including:

Taking sips of water
Swallowing
Pinching your nose and blowing very gently
Performing the Valsalva maneuver (bearing down)

Chamber FAQ's 👇

What do you wear in the hyperbaric chamber?

You will only wear a 100% cotton gown, provided by the facility. Since this treatment is a hyperoxygenation therapy, it’s a serious fire hazard, so it’s important to reduce your risk of static electricity and sparking as much as possible.

You may be able to wear 100% cotton undergarments if the facility allows. Other than that, you are more than welcome to arrive at the facility in whatever clothes are comfortable for you. It’s critical that you don’t enter the chamber with any grooming topicals, piercings, or removable items. You should not have any of the following on your person:

Lotion
Hairspray, hair gel, or mustache wax
Makeup
Perfume/ cologne
Piercings
A wig
Hearing aids
Eyeglasses or contacts
Any jewelry
Dentures
Prosthetics

Your facility will have specific policies, and your therapist will frequently review what’s allowed in the chamber. If you arrive with an item that can’t easily be removed, your therapy may need to be canceled.

Our Story

Hyperbaric Administrative Services began as a vision of providing non-hospital, independent hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients that would benefit from the treatments. By avoiding the additional costs that are part of the Hospital Outpatient Department setting, our patients can get comprehensive treatment for wounds and other conditions that benefit from hyperbaric therapy for less than being treated in the HOPD setting.
