Good morning. Sorry for the lapse in time here. Tip #11: After an interview always send a follow thank you note. This can be done by snail mail but in this current day of technology sending it via email or Linkedin is most professional and tasteful. You should state 3 things: thanking them for the opportunity, mention an aspect about their business that you learned on the interview and tactfully mention you will be looking forward to hearing from them in the timeframe they stated.

Tip#10: Your resume should directly and indirectly match the job you are posting for. Custom fit your resume to suit the employer and his needs. At the top of your resume under 'your objective' , you should then have 'qualifications'.Your top 3 quaulifications should match what the employer is most looking for. I recommend bulletted qualifications. They are easier to read and stand out. Remember you need to be an easy read to catch their attention. Happy Wednesday!

Question: What if they won't hire me because I have no experience? Tip #10: With no relevant experience, you need to highlight your previous accomplishments that showcase your abilities. For example, are you a high school student looking for work? Your resume should include all awards, extra curriculum actvities, volunteer work and sports participation. This can show your work ethic, ability to be trained quickly, reliability and value amongst many other talents you may possess. Word Whiskers: Are They Making Your Public Speaking Inneffective?

Tip #9: Word whiskers- a true no no when interviewing. What are word whiskers? 'Um', 'you see', 'and uh'. Word whiskers are any phrase you may use to fill in the gaps when you are nervous or at a lost for words. They make an employer unsure that you are confident in your abilities or even in what you are speaking of. Here are some tips on how to remove them from your daily speech:

Tip # 8: Employers prepare for an interview. Do you? They strategically ask questions to explore your true nature, your natural abilities and work ethic. Come prepared. Memorize the answers to at least 10 interview questions. A great aid that I used was a book by John Kador "The Managers book of questions: 1001 Great interview Questions for hiring the best person." Go buy the book. Its a great investment to be prepared in any interviewing situation. A true turn off to an interview question is being answered with 'ummmmm' and " I don't know'.

Tip#7: How to dress on an interview. Whether you are interviewing for a corporate or a 'blue collar' position it is always best to dress in business attire. Even if you do not wear suits in your profession by wearing one on the interview you set yourself apart and command respect from the moment you walk through the door. Men: A full matching suit, polished shoes, fresh haircut, clean hands. Women: A pants suit, nuetral colored clothes and makeup, pantyhose, dress shoes, no sandals ever. Wear a smile and greet each person with a firm but inviting hand shake and look everyone directly in the eye when speaking and being spoken to. There is never an excuse for not having one interview suit. If budget is the issue try Goodwill or a consignment shop. Dont knock it!

Online Resume Builder | How to Make a Resume | How to Write a Resume

Tip #6: The resume and cover letter are key elements to landing an interview. I keep bringing it up but it is crucial. First, your cover letter should be specific and be addressed to a specific person if you have the name. Second, it can be based off of a generic cover letter but tweek each letter to be tailored to the job you are posting for. If a job qualification states certain characteristics and qualities, make sure they are listed in your resume. Mispellings will get you tossed in the trash. Always use spell check. For a simple aid in creating a resume use http://www.theresumebuilder.com/. If you are a fish out of water then I suggest hiring someone to create it for you. They start at about $50 and the right one is completely worth the small investment.

Tip #5: When creating your resume it is recommended you dont just list your work history but highlight your accomplishments. Always use dates, titles, and specific milestones, financial increases or recognition that was given. This will show your value to an employer and why he should hire you. If you would like free over view of your resume inbox me send your resume to me at [email protected]. We will make any suggestions you would like to make you even more attractive to a potential employer.

10/03/2011

Good morning! Tip #4: Resumes should be career specific. If your job history is in 2 different careers then you need 2 different resumes. Both resumes show the same jobs however one will highlight one career and downplay the other and viceversa. Standard items on resumes are Dates of employment, address, phone number and email address. All information should be current with no misspellings. The resume needs to be aligned properly. Either one of these will get your resume tossed in the trash. Do not list yourself as detailed oriented with misspellings on your resume. Tomorrow we will discuss more on what your resume should contain.

09/30/2011

Tip#3: Now you have a business card and a contact name. Here are a few options for your next step with this information. Visit the company website. Learn more about the company so you can use this information in your cover letter. Search on the site for a bio of the hiring manager. Next invite your contact to connect with you on Linkedin. If you are not familiar with Linkedin please inbox me. It is vital in job searches. See if the business is on FB. If so, like them. More than likely on the business card is a fax or personal email that you can send your resume out. Write a professional cover letter. Address the contact person by Mr or Ms. and last name. Mention something in detail you noticed on the website that shows your genuine interest in the company. Be sure to end your cover letter with your name, email address and phone number for easy access. Remember, you are one of 100's of resumes, no employer likes to search for your contact info. Now they have seen your resume 3 times. Repetition shows persistence and this increases your opportunity for an interview.

09/29/2011

Tip#2: If you apply for a local position online try and stop by the place of employment to drop off your resume also. When you go to the office you should be dressed business casual. For men a dress shirt, slacks and well polished shoes. Tie optional. For women, a business suit or a blouse and dress pants. No sandals, flipflops or shades. From the moment you walk in look every one directly in the eye, wear a smile, shake hands firmly and ask for the person that does the hiring. If the 'gatekeeper' (front desk asst) wont let you get to them; give the resume to her. Ask her for her name and introduce yourself. Also ask for the name of the person hiring. Now armed with a business name and personal names tomorrow I will tell you how to use that to your advantage.
