The U.S. infant mortality rate rose 3% last year — the largest increase in two decades, according to the CDC.

Experts at this point can only speculate as to why a statistic that generally has been falling for decades rose sharply in 2022.

RSV and flu infections rebounded last fall after two years of pandemic precautions, filling pediatric emergency rooms across the country. "That could potentially account for some of it."

Researchers are speculating about possible reasons. One says it's unclear whether the increase was a one-year statistical blip or the beginning of a more lasting trend.

The World Health Organization in May called for ethical oversight of AI chatbots in medicine and warned that data used to train the technologies may be biased.

The new tech tools, if fueled by false or inaccurate data, have the potential to worsen health disparities.

A new study by JAMA found that babies born to mothers with private insurance had a lower infant mortality rate than babies born to moms with Medicaid.

"We have to get women in for prenatal care as early as possible. And that has to be done by our elected officials who have to make Medicaid as easy for pregnant women to get as if going into a store and, you know, buying a pack of gum."

A new study looks at different outcomes in childbirth based on private insurance versus Medicaid.
