Hi, I’m Jessica. If you’re new here, I’m glad to connect with you.
I’m 34 and I’m making some changes in my life. Every year, I’m spiraling inward, making space for my true self, and excavating my true self from the layers of conditioning and unspoken, unchallenged things I’ve found myself in.
It has not been a wholly pretty process to watch, but hey, real, authentic stuff is messy. Especially when it means knowing some dynamics are not working for me, while other people expect me to just play along for everyone else’s comfort. So if you, too, are someone who is finding themselves and saying no to things and finding other people get bent out of shape about it… you are in good company.
Today I wanted to share about a practice I started last year. Even though I started reading tarot back in 2008, I have never been able to commit & follow through on a daily card reading practice. Never. Frankly, it’s never been something I thought was important. In that time, delivering thousands of tarot readings for customers across the world, people would often ask me how I got so proficient with tarot - and how they could get started, too. If I had kept track of how many people were shocked to hear I didn’t have a regular card reading practice, that number would surprise both of us.
Here’s the thing. When I sit with my cards every morning these days, I’m not necessarily trying to predict what’s going to happen today. I’m not really trying to get anything specific. I’m just creating a time in my day that I dedicate to what I need, and I use cards to help me orient my nervous system. In that process, I often find there’s more space for my own spirit to show up.
Which means…
🌱 I spend less time mindlessly numbing myself (especially social media) to cope with the stress of the day.
🌱 I set a foundation for my day that reminds me that I am sacred and sovereign, even when I have to unload the dishwasher & take out the trash before I can have my coffee.
🌱 I keep myself out of the trap of obsessing all day if I draw cards with “negative” messages or omens.
🌱 I am keeping a promise to myself, which is healing my ability to trust myself (and means I spend less time ruminating and hating myself when things don’t turn out the way I wanted)
🌱 and - my favorite - it reinforces the pattern I want to create within myself, which is that I have what I need inside of me, and I access that resource better when I am not immediately flooding my system with external signals.
This year I’ve set the intention to continuing my morning spiritual practice and using a specific deck of cards (the Moonchild Tarot) for myself for the year. I may use a different oracle deck each month 🤷‍♀️ I’m not sure yet. I don’t expect myself to hit every single day; I’ve built in some grace and flexibility. (For example… didn’t do it at all over the holiday break, and I didn’t beat myself up about it. I just started back up again on 1/1.) But so far? Ooooh. Oh my friend. This has already been an incredibly supportive practice.
I’m really looking forward to this being the year that I let myself do all the things I want to do, by making space for it in my life. 💕
