Your body contains a lot of water, and that water contains hydrogen. MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses to interact with hydrogen nuclei in your body.

As those hydrogen nuclei return toward their original state, they produce signals that vary between different tissues. The MRI detects those signals and uses them to create the detailed images your medical team can review.
