Pets & seniors... never discount the power of pets. Often times a senior's pet is what keeps them going. Holding & petting a cat or dog reduces stress and anxiety. Getting up and caring for the pet they love, gives them purpose. My 95 year old grandmother still gets up everyday and feeds her chickens, gathers her eggs and puts the chickens away at night. I am convinced that if she did not have them to care for, she would give up on life. Avoid pressuring seniors to give up their pets. The reality is that many seniors are already going through changes and loss of independence, and being asked or demanded to give up the love and companionship of a pet will likely cause a rapid decline in mental & physical health and possible death. Work to find a way to help your aging loved one hold on to their pets for as long as possible.
