Have you ever looked at how many hours you've spent scrolling through social media? Your phone can track that for you. What may start as a 5 minute break can quickly turn into hours of mindless scrolling. A mental break can be great during the day, and don't get me wrong, social media can be a great way to connect with friends! But, as we all know, there can be a lot of negatives that come with social media as well.

Take some time for your today! Turn that phone on silent and go out for a walk. Or do some yoga, perhaps make a big yummy meal from scratch. Do whatever makes you happy. 😊

Food Sustainability and Your Health

You may be wondering what food sustainability is, how it’s relevant to you and your health, and what steps you can take to move toward a more planet-friendly diet.
Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present generation, without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainable food and water systems assure that humans will have optimal and equitable access to healthy food and water now, and in the future.
Choosing to transition our diets toward foods that are produced in sustainable ways can improve our health and the health of the environment. By reducing the amount of animal protein we consume, and increasing the number of fruits and vegetables in our diet, we can reduce the risk for nutrition-related diseases while helping protect the environment, and preserve the food supply for generations to come.

June is National Dairy Month

National Dairy Month was originally established in 1938 for milk and grocery promotion. Now, National Dairy Month serves to remind us all of the health benefits that dairy has to offer.

Including low-fat or non-fat dairy products in your diet can provide essential nutrients for your body. These include protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, potassium, zinc, choline, magnesium, and selenium.

Not only is dairy rich in vitamins and minerals, it is also high in protein. Milk, Greek yogurt, and cottage cheese are especially high in protein and can be a great addition to your diet to help you meet your protein needs.

However, according to Endocrinologist, Dr. Anat Ben-Shlomo from Cedars-Sinai stated in the article: Debunking Adrenal Fatigue, written by Cedars-Sinai that, “when you’re stressed, the adrenal glands actually produce more of the cortisol and other hormones you need.”

Autism and Nutrition – Are They Connected?

More than 3.5 million people in the U.S. are living with Autism. Over the years, more research has been done on how diet can correlate with it. Studies have shown that people with Autism have abnormal immune responses to foods that contain gluten, casein, and sometimes soy.
For example, a study of 150 children with Autism found that 87% had sensitivity to gluten and 90% had sensitivity to casein which is found in dairy products. Children who followed a gluten and casein free diet displayed improvements in eye contact, learning skills, hyperactivity, panic attacks, communication, and social interaction.

Stress & Weight Loss

Most people know diet and exercise influence weight loss…but do you know how stress can impact your weight loss?
During stressful times, your hunger and fullness hormones are out of balance. This can lead to a lower satiating effect of foods and consumption of high-sugar and high-fat foods. Research has shown that consuming comfort foods as a response to stress activates the brain reward system and encourages people to continue to consume these foods to cope with stress.

Food Allergies: How to Cope

A food allergy results when a food is consumed and mistaken by the body to be something harmful, which causes the immune system to respond and attack. This negative immune response causes unwanted signs and symptoms such as hives, GI issues, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases anaphylaxis.
The most common allergens in the United States are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, fish and shellfish.
