Judging an entire population by an experience you had with an individual is never a good idea.
Ever since the very beginning, for over a decade now, when people get wind that I’m working with a specific teacher, their “enemies” treat me differently.
They put me in a camp. Or a group. I’m the enemy now.
And I’ve had some teachers along the way - NOT ALL … but some - who wanted me to be “their girl.” Hold the party line.
One thing about me is, if you tell me to think a certain way or feel a certain way, I’m probably gonna do the opposite, and at the very least find out for myself.
And to be honest, this has gotten me into some trouble through the years. I had to find out the hard way.
But I like to give people a chance. 🤷🏼♀️
And overwhelmingly, keeping an open mind and finding out for myself has served me well.
I think that one of the most important things I have done, and the best teachers, I know have done, and that you can do as a Pilates teacher, is to experience for yourself various perspectives. Take the good, and leave the bed.
There is a commonality in the true Pilates method. And then on top of that are the various interpretations of the individuals.
I have been able to identify what is important by identifying that central underlying theme... seeing what they do the same tells me what is important. Everything else is an add-on.
When you strip away other people’s interpretations you are left with the bones. And through time and experience, you can figure out how to maintain the integrity of those bones while adding your own unique interpretation or adopting the ones of others that work for you and your clients.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Love you. Mean it.
And, if you’re sick and tired of all the bu****it and finger pointing and demonizing, and you just wanna do good Pilates, check out the Pilates podcast. I think you’ll like it there.
