Taran Strong ♿ Life after a brain & spinal cord injury.

❤️ Real life. Welcome to "Taran Strong". "Welcome to Taran Strong (formerly Tar's Road to Recovery). It's a goal.

Unfiltered.

🐾 The good days, the hard days & everything in between.

🦋 Sharing my journey, one day at a time. As the page grows beyond what we could have ever imagined, there are many questions about Tar's injury, diagnosis, background, who runs the page etc. The purpose of "Taran Strong" is to document her journey and recovery, and to bring hope and inspiration to others facing their own struggles. There are legal restrictions in place prohibiting ongoing discussion regarding her family situation and we ask that everyone respect that. What started as a way to record her progress, has turned into a beautiful, loving community of support - individuals caring for each other. The page is run collaboratively with close friends of Tar, who are page admins. She provides the video and photographic content, and some of the quotes and inspirational messages. While many posts are made and responded to by her team, she "IS" the page. Without her as the backbone of this loving community, it would not exist. The background of what happened to Taran, and set her on this journey, is explained below. In September 2020, Taran was preparing for an upcoming move to South Carolina with her family. She and three of her four children were involved in horrific car accident, the impact of which was astronomical. The accident tragically took the life of her 3 year old daughter, and the driver of the other vehicle, who was also a beautiful mother. Tar deals with the complex emotions relating to the accident privately, in therapy. We don't speak often of the other driver, not because we don't care, but because her story, and her family's story is not Taran's to tell. We all think about and pray for her family, often. Two of Tar's other children were also injured in the accident. Thankfully, they have recovered from their physical injuries. Tar survived - barely. She was paralyzed from the neck down and hanging onto life, with a frontal lobe traumatic brain injury, too. She "died" multiple times and each time, the medical team brought her back. She has to believe that God had a purpose for keeping her on this earth and that thought is one that has helped her grow spiritually, too. Micki Valentine's loss on that awful day, is one that sometimes seems impossible to recover from. She would have turned 8 in February of 2025. Though she is missed intensely each and every day, we can only imagine the joys she brings to others in Heaven. Her heart full of love and zest for life was infectious. Micki's memory motivates Tar very day to get better, be better and do better – words we should all live by. Her ultimate diagnosis was incomplete C2-C5 tetraplegia (quadriplegic), with a frontal lobe traumatic brain injury, along with other injuries (open fractures, perforated bowel). She was not expected to walk again, let alone function in the way she is today. While her daily challenges often feel like climbing a mountain, she pushes through, with the ultimate goal being independent function and living. Taran lives alone with her pup, and with the help of part time caregivers, in an apartment in Orange County, California. Her focus is on healing, both physically and mentally from the trauma of the last few years. She takes inspiration every day from people around the world who have reached out to her with love, kindness, and HOPE. There aren’t enough words to convey how wonderful her medical team are. Her nurse, Kim, her CNA, Dani, her neuro trainers (PT), Josh and Jason, her OT, Margie, her trauma therapist Dr. O, neurologist, psychiatrist - all wonderful people who have literally transformed her life. SO many friends surround her with love and care and she is eternally grateful to you all. This page exists for one reason, and one reason alone. To thank everyone, and to give back. Together, we are working on launching a foundation in 2025, helping families who have suffered similar traumas. She is SUCH a bright light, and wants to shine that light on others and help them find their way, too. It has inspired her to hear how her journey is encouraging others not to give up, or to give them strength while battling their own health issues. As Tar herself has stated – she is grateful to be alive to see this next chapter be written and for you to be a part. Live, laugh, drink water and (her beloved Micki's nickname). Favorite Quotes

🎉🐾 Happy 1st Birthday to the one and only Stevie Nicks! ❤️🐈

Our beautiful Savannah girl has had quite the adventure these past few months, and we’re especially grateful to be celebrating her birthday with her safe at home!

A couple of months ago, Stevie injured her hip after jumping awkwardly and ended up needing FHO surgery. Thankfully, she’s made a wonderful recovery and Trupanion pet insurance were great to deal with. ❤️

Stevie has her own little enclosed outdoor catio, lovingly built by a friend. It’s connected to the house via a cat flap so she can safely enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. ☀️

When Sherrie arrived early a couple of Sundays ago, Stevie was nowhere to be found. The lock on her catio had been undone, some items were disturbed and it appeared someone had entered the backyard and taken her.

Thankfully, camera footage helped piece together what had happened. Although the people weren’t clearly identifiable due in part to the rain - we could tell Stevie had managed to escape and thank goodness for her AirTag! We were able to track her down and bring her home safely that very same day. The incident was reported to the police - but we’ll probably never really know what really happened.

But today is about celebrating our beautiful Stevie Nicks, who has certainly used up a few of her nine lives lately! 😂❤️

Happy Birthday, sweet girl! We’re so, so glad you’re home safe with your brother, where you belong. 🎂🐾💕

When Sherrie gets to pick what she wants to do for her birthday and she chooses to take TAR on a day trip to Disneyland! 😭❤️ (we’re lucky - it’s less than an hour away)

And those giant Minnie Mouse hands? Tar wore them ALL day! 😂🐭 She absolutely loved being able to tuck her hands inside them!

Disney brought back some wonderful memories for Tar, and now she has some pretty special new ones too. And just wait until you hear her singing “It’s a Small World!” 🌎 🥹

And there’s a sweet little story behind why Judith joined them for the day, too.

Once a month, Sherrie volunteers at a senior / assisted living home, pampering the ladies, doing their nails and facials, and spending time with them. That’s where she met Judith, who also helps care for one of the ladies there.

Judith moved here from Kenya and is still finding her feet, so Sherrie invited her along to Disneyland too. ❤️

And that pretty much sums up Sherrie. Even when it’s HER birthday, she’s thinking about how to make someone else’s day special.

Everyone needs a Sherrie in their life. 🥹❤️

A wildfire, a wardrobe malfunction, and a red carpet! What a night! 😂❤️

Last night, Tar attended the annual Stand Up for a Cause Gala benefiting Walking With Anthony, an organization that’s been close to her heart for years.

And what an incredible evening it turned out to be!

Getting there, however, was quite the adventure!

With the Norte Fire spreading toward Tar’s neighborhood and roads being closed, her caregiver couldn’t get through to help her get ready.

So what should have been a fairly straightforward afternoon of getting dressed up for a beautiful event quickly turned into chaos. Add in a last-minute wardrobe malfunction meant a dress swap, and things weren’t exactly going according to plan! 😂

Meanwhile, the fire was getting closer to her home, roads were closing, and there was a very real possibility that she wouldn’t make it to the gala at all. To be clear - they weren’t under an evacuation order.

Thankfully, with some help from the wonderful people around her, Tar was able to get out safely and make her way north along Pacific Coast Highway.

And through all of it, she somehow managed to keep smiling! ❤️

Once she finally arrived, it was an absolutely wonderful evening!

Walking With Anthony is an extraordinary organization dedicated to helping people living with spinal cord injuries access rehabilitation, equipment, resources and opportunities that can make a tremendous difference in their lives.

Tar has been involved with this organization for years and has so much admiration for the people behind it and the incredible work they do.

Living with a spinal cord injury comes with challenges that most people will never fully understand. Having organizations like Walking With Anthony advocating for people, opening doors and helping them access the support they need is so incredibly important.

Beyond the wonderful cause, it was also a night filled with laughter, familiar faces, new memories and some especially lovely moments reconnecting with friends new and old. ❤️

And after everything Tar has been through, it’s just lovely to see her getting dressed up, going out, enjoying herself and having a genuinely wonderful time. And yes, she did wear slippers 😂- after all that it really didn’t matter at that point.

A huge thank you to Walking With Anthony, the organizers, sponsors and everyone who made this beautiful event possible.

What started as a pretty stressful afternoon ended up being a night to remember.

And looking at these photos, we think you’ll agree that Tar had a fantastic time! 🥰

A lot of changes happening around here! 📦❤️

Between packing up the house, preparing for a new chapter, and everything else life throws her way, Tar is still showing up and putting in the work.

Today that means another workout with Jason. Some days are harder than others, but the work continues, one day at a time.

New beginnings ahead. ❤️

A little hand therapy with Rebecca and a whole lot of gratitude. ❤️

The little things matter, and so do the people who keep showing up, cheering Tar on and keeping her in their prayers. She never takes that love and support for granted. 💕

Sometimes I wonder what people see when they look at me.

Do they see the woman laughing in a video? The one making jokes, trying new things, and celebrating the smallest victories?

Because that woman is real. Those smiles are real. And I treasure those moments so much more than you could ever know.

But there’s another side of my life that you don’t see.

The quiet moments. The sadness. The memories that come flooding back when I least expect them.

There are things I carry that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I’ve learned that you can laugh with your whole heart and still have a broken one.

You can be proud of how far you’ve come and still grieve everything that changed.

And sometimes, the hardest part is knowing that no matter how much progress you make, there are things that progress simply cannot fix.

I don’t believe that every broken heart eventually heals. Some things will never be okay. And I think it’s important to be able to say that.

Some days are filled with laughter. Some days feel like torture. Most days are a little of both.

But every smile you see is genuine.

And so is the pain you don’t. ❤️

Connection comes easier to some than others. ❤️

Reach out. Offer comfort. Show up for people. You might be surprised by who reaches back and shows up for you, too.

Good food, beautiful friendships, and an evening full of laughter. ❤️

Some girlfriends treated Tar to dinner last night, and judging by those smiles, it was exactly the kind of evening everyone needed.
