Paul and Abigails story

If you've ever lived with someone with autism, you know that the challenges can be very great.

Once I read a poignant article that was written as an analogy about having kids with special needs. It was a beautiful story about getting on a plane and intending to go to Italy, and ending up instead in Holland.

The writer encouraged people who found themselves in a different place than where they thought they were going, to learn to embrace where they were. To love their children and find the beauty in each moment, despite the inevitable challenges. To learn to embrace the ways of "Holland" instead of wishing you had gone to "Italy" like you planned.

At the end of the article, there was this great comment that resonated with me and every other parent of a child with autism. It read simply, "Yes, but the Dutch people keep yelling at me!"

Humorous, yes, but accurate! One of the greatest challenges of autism is the intense moods and reactions our children can have, at the most unexpected times and in unexpected places.

As our son grew and developed and we learned about his condition, we did all we could to help him. We tried many natural ways to help him be more balanced and happy in his life, but everything we tried simply failed. I won't bother you with the detailed list. Suffice it to say we were very discouraged. As he grew older, it only grew harder. It seemed there was no answer.

In April when my husband found help sleeping with CBD, I began to research, and found a few articles that mentioned CBD and autism. A spark of hope came back to my heart, as I began to wonder if this might be the answer we were looking for. We decided to try it.

Joey began to take CBD twice daily. I didn't tell anyone about it, other than my husband. I didn't want to influence anyone in how they saw his behavior. For two weeks I watched and didn't say a word about it, except to check and make sure he was taking it. He began to sleep better, almost right away. After a couple weeks, my mom (who lives with us) approached me. "Have you noticed Joey?" she asked. "He seems so much happier." Yes! I smiled. I noticed. That was the beginning. Other family members noticed, too. And we rejoiced! We finally found something to help our son. My heart was so full. Helping our son has been the best thing that happened all last year.

It's not perfect. Sometimes the Dutch people still yell at me.

But I feel, as I have said to many people now, our son is finally getting to be the person he wanted to be all along. I am so grateful for CBD. For the God who made it and brought it to us at this time in our lives.
