FD&C Red No. 3 — also called erythrosine — is a synthetic dye used to create that bright cherry-red color in certain foods and ingested drugs.

Why was it finally removed?

Because studies cited in the petition showed it caused cancer, including thyroid tumors, in male laboratory rats exposed to high levels. In January 2025, the FDA revoked its authorization for use in food and ingested drugs. And let’s be honest: the FDA does not remove many ingredients. So when an additive is finally revoked, people should pay attention.
