To wrap up the week, we’re celebrating Cherie Sims and her remarkable 39+ years of dedicated service! She is our most tenured DSP at McGuire Memorial! Cherie’s journey is an inspiring example of how an unexpected opportunity can bloom into a lifelong calling filled with deep impact.

Q: How did you start your career at McGuire?
A: “My stepsister and fiancé were applying, and I didn't want to be bored in the car, so I applied too! At the time, I was studying accounting and computer programming, and ironically, I was the only one who got hired. My initial tour was overwhelming and I honestly hoped for a different position. However, Sr. Angela had other plans for me, so I decided to give it a try. It ended up becoming my lifelong career. I love the structure in our workdays, the deep care from our staff & management, and, above all, the amazing people we support. I smile and laugh every single day at work. Even after all this time, I still truly love my job!”

Q: What do you wish people understood about the individuals you support, and how has it changed you?
A: “People think they live sad lives, but that's far from the truth. They want fun, laughter, and friends just like anyone else. Their lives are rich and full! They also appreciate the little things like love and connection. Working with them has taught me not to complain or sweat the small stuff. As a DSP, my role is a friend, caregiver, and advocate. I've grown stronger because of my love for them… they've made such a positive difference in me.”

Q: What is your advice for a new DSP?
A: “Have patience, give it time, ask questions, and focus on being thorough before fast. Once you learn routines and preferences, it gets easier. Everyone deserves love and a full life. The best moments are watching trust and perseverance lead to breakthroughs, independence, and a better quality of life. At the end of a good day, I feel a blessed sense of accomplishment.”

Thank you to Cherie and to ALL of our extraordinary DSPs for the heart you bring to McGuire Memorial every day!

Today, we’re celebrating Michelle Markun and her extraordinary 38.5 years of dedicated service at McGuire Memorial! Michelle’s journey is an example of how one experience can inspire a lifelong calling filled with love.

Q: How did you first come to McGuire Memorial?
A: “I first came to McGuire as a senior at Quigley for my required service project. I spent a week reading stories to the children, rocking them in rocking chairs, spending time with them on walks and engaged them in activities. They really sparked my interest and had an immediate sense of love. I saw past any disability and appreciated the person within. I enjoyed the experience so much that I applied to work at McGuire the following week. Sr. Angela handed me my paperwork and told me when I was starting! I worked weekends until I graduated. I never left…I knew this was where I was meant to be.”

Q: What have the people you support taught you?
A: “They have taught me patience, acceptance, how to care deeply, and unconditional love. They have shown me that they are just like you and me. They love, build relationships, want friendships, and want to experience life to the fullest. There are so many things we take for granted, and those are the things we get to give to the people we support. They have taught me how to love unconditionally, and I love what THEY give me in return.”

Q: What does being a DSP mean to you?
A: “It means being a caregiver, a friend, family, and a strong advocate. I am proud to be a DSP. I make a difference in people’s lives, and there is happiness built into every single day. This isn’t just my job, it’s my joy. I enjoy working at McGuire because our staff truly care about the people we support we are not afraid to love the people we support. I love walking in at 7 AM and seeing those big smiles and excited faces. I have cried tears of gratitude throughout this interview because I simply love what I do.”

Q: How did you first come to McGuire Memorial, and what made you stay?
A: “I first came to McGuire in eighth grade while volunteering for my Confirmation. I read stories to the ‘little guys’, and their eyes lit up and they smiled. I was so touched by their reaction. Years later, I saw an ad that McGuire was hiring. I thought, maybe I could do this. I accepted the position, and I truly believe I found my purpose in life. I know that God put me here and I don’t question that one bit. In fact, I joyfully accept it!”

Q: What have the people you support taught you?
A: “They have taught me kindness, empathy, and compassion. Before I met them, my little problems could seem so big. I recognized that if they can overcome their challenges, I can overcome mine too! They showed me that despite any disability there is potential to learn, grow, listen, respond…and love! We just need to help to foster that. I’ve seen that potential unfold in so many ways.”

Q: What does being a DSP mean to you?
A: “It means being a caregiver, family member, friend, and advocate. I’m a mama bear. The people we support deserve love, patience, dignity, and the opportunity to experience life just like you and me. We don’t give up on them. I’ve dried their tears, celebrated their accomplishments, and supported them through difficult and joyous moments. They have changed and touched my life and I experience pure joy working at McGuire! They are my family, and even when I retire, I will always be part of theirs.”
