About Dr. Sult

Dr. Sult started in the medical field as a paramedic in an advanced life support mobile intensive care unit. After a year in acupuncture school he decided to go to medical school. Georges University School of Medicine in Grenada the West Indies. There he lived with a Grenadian family interested in preserving their indigenous culture. He was introduced to local healers and “Bush Doctors”. He found the indigenous healing practices interesting and in harmony with his acupuncture training. He also wondered about the modern biochemical implications of these therapies. Dr. Sult transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Norman Cousins. While not a doctor, Mr. Cousins was the head of the department of psycho neuro-immunology. This is a fancy scientific way of saying holistic medicine. It was fascinating to find a group of scientists looking seriously at the interrelationship of mind, body and environment. And it was reaffirming to the other lessons learned both in acupuncture school and by the indigenous healers of Grenada. Mr. Cousins remained an important mentor to Dr. Sult until his death in 1990. Dr. Sult is on faculty with the Institute of Functional Medicine and teaches doctors from around the world the principles of functional medicine. At 3rd Opinion Dr. Sult applies the principles of functional medicine to his patient’s medical conditions. More can be learned about functional medicine at http://www.functionalmedicine.org

About the Movement

Let me ask you a question: When was the last time you felt truly well? I don't mean the last time you felt like there was nothing wrong. I mean the last time you felt deep, full wellness in your body, mind, and spirit. It's a hard question to answer, isn't it? And yet it's crucial, and it's where I start each one of my appointments with a new patient, as many of you know. Functional medicine - the discipline I practice along with a growing number of physicians in this country—acknowledges that wellness is so much more than the absence of disease. In a nutshell, functional medicine is a system that addresses the underlying causes of disease, that takes into account the interactions of the complex systems of the body, and that builds a therapeutic partnership between patient and physician. My colleagues and I believe that finding wellness isn't about getting a prescription for whatever symptom is bothering you at the moment. Instead, finding health is about addressing the fundamental causes of health issues, and about understanding that each of us is a marvelously interconnected system. To us, wellness is a vibrant state of wellbeing. I'm proud to be part of the functional medicine movement, and that you—especially if you're one of the millions of Americans suffering from chronic disease, whether it's cancer or diabetes or mental illness—will join me on the journey ahead, as we build a community around this movement to share in what we've learned together. About the Book

When was the last time you were completely well? I don’t mean the last time you “felt okay” for a day or two; I mean completely well. If you are like most patients who come to my office, this is not an easy question to answer. In part, it’s because “completely well” is a nebulous term. It’s different for everyone and yours to define. What I am really asking is this: when did your health change? What was the year, the month, the moment that your health shifted from completely well—whatever that means for you—to what it is now? The answer is crucial, because knowing when your health changed means we can explore the most important question of all: why? If you are like most patients I see, you have been suffering from chronic illness for longer than you care to recall. You’re a regular with your local doctor, have been referred to one or several specialists, and have traveled to universities and/or the Mayo Clinic in an effort to determine what is wrong with your health. You’ve been given a variety of diagnoses, with a drug to combat each symptom and further drugs to counteract the side effects of the first batch. You are anxious because you are ill and ill because you are anxious. Despite all your efforts, all the doctors’ visits, research, and medication—a devastatingly frustrating cycle—the problems have persisted. At some point, not only did the doctors start to doubt you . . . you started to doubt yourself. Whether you have found this book through research, a recommendation, or through a doctor, you are probably feeling defeated. But you are in the right place. Functional medicine can restore hope. Functional medicine has the capacity to unleash your awesome capacity to heal. We had to share this fun throwback from last year when we got dressed up for a mystery dinner!

Whatever your Halloween plans look like, we hope you have a wonderful time. Laugh a little, enjoy some candy (yes, really!), and make some fun memories.

After all, we always say progress over perfection. A little Halloween candy isn't going to undo all the good things you're doing for your health. 😉

Have fun, stay safe, and Happy Halloween! 🎃

Happy Friday! 🥳

We snapped this picture earlier this week while out walking with our dogs, and it was a little reminder of just how much there is to notice when we slow down and pay attention.

We're big believers in staying curious, not just about your health but about the world around you, too. Sometimes it's the little things that are easiest to miss.

So, consider this your friendly Friday reminder to get outside for a walk, even if it's just for 10 minutes. 🍂

Admire the fall colors. Notice which trees are still holding on to their leaves and which have already let go. Look around, take it all in, and simply enjoy being present.

What if the next step in your Lyme recovery isn't another treatment, but a better understanding of your biology?

After 30 years of caring for people with complex chronic illness, I've learned that more information and more treatments aren't always the answer.

Sometimes, what you need is a map.

That's why I developed Precision Lyme Management (PLM). It's a different way of understanding chronic Lyme through five interconnected areas of biology and how they influence recovery.

And I'm inviting you to learn more.

Our physician-led PLM Founding Membership is now open to the first 100 members. This community is designed to help you better understand the PLM framework, explore the factors that influence recovery, and begin thinking differently about your health.

Not quite ready? Start with my FREE webinar, Why Chronic Lyme Recovery Stalls, where I introduce a different way to think about recovery.

You don't have to keep walking in circles.
📍Let's get you a map home.

That number is called VO₂ max.

It measures how well your body can take in oxygen, move it through the bloodstream, and use it during exercise.

That means VO₂ max is not just a fitness score.

It reflects how well your lungs, heart, circulation, muscles, and mitochondria work together.

Two people can be the same age and have dramatically different aerobic capacity.

And that difference matters.

A higher VO₂ max is strongly associated with better health and longevity.

Your chronological age is only part of the story. Your functional capacity tells us something different.

At Just Be Well, we measure aerobic fitness to help people understand where you are now and what you can improve. Learn more about what it's like to be a patient: https://bit.ly/newpatientexperienceJBW

If you're looking for a new, nourishing recipe to try...this just might be what you're looking for.

I recently made this delicious Lemon Garlic Butter pasta. It's packed with lovely flavors from the lemon and garlic. 😋 Bonus: it reheats really well so you can enjoy it as leftovers the following day.

Sometimes we need a gentle reminder that we can grow, change and move forward without pushing ourselves to the breaking point.

I created a set of free mantra cards for women who could use a little more encouragement, grace and intention in their everyday lives.

Keep them somewhere you'll see them, share them with a friend or turn to them when you need a reminder to be kind to yourself.

I'd love for you to have a set! Download your free mantra cards now: https://bit.ly/DownloadMantraCards

What is the best treatment for Lyme disease?
I think there is a problem hidden inside that question.

Imagine being lost in a large wilderness. You have good hiking boots, plenty of food, a compass, and the determination to keep walking. Someone offers you better boots. Someone else tells you to walk faster. Another tells you that the people who escaped this wilderness went east.

Any of those directions might be useful. But first you need to know:

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

That is how I have come to think about chronic Lyme disease. The problem is often not a shortage of treatments. The problem is knowing where you are in the illness, what is keeping you there, and which direction makes sense from that location.

Can you relate to the Grinch? 🎄 Fatigue is not always about lack of sleep.

You can sleep eight hours and still feel like your battery never charged.

That is because energy is not simply something you feel.

Your cells have to make it.

Much of that work happens inside mitochondria, where nutrients and oxygen are converted into ATP, the energy your cells can actually use.

When energy production becomes inefficient, the effects can show up almost anywhere:

Brain fog. Poor recovery. Exercise intolerance. Weakness. Fatigue.

Mitochondria do far more than make energy, but energy is where many people first notice the problem.

Feeling tired and producing energy are not always the same issue.

At Just Be Well, we help people with persistent fatigue and poor stamina look for the biology that may be limiting energy production. Learn more about what it's like to be a patient: https://bit.ly/newpatientexperienceJBW.

Have a great week! And remember, you can flip the script...just like the Grinch eventually did.
