🔬 What is a liquid biopsy for lung cancer? Liquid biopsies offer a way to identify biomarkers through a blood test, especially for patients who lack sufficient tissue for traditional testing. Approved by the FDA in 2016, this method now helps detect genetic drivers in over half of lung cancers. Discover more by visiting the link.

Did you know that treatment timing can significantly impact lung cancer outcomes? 🩺 Neoadjuvant therapy, administered before surgery, helps shrink tumors and tailor treatment to the individual, while adjuvant therapy, given after surgery, targets any remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk of recurrence and improving survival rates. These approaches are vital in enhancing the effectiveness of lung cancer treatment. Learn more by clicking the link below. ⬇️

If you didn’t get the memo, this year’s theme is screening! The earlier lung cancer is caught, the more opportunities there are for treatment and the higher the likelihood that you’ll have a better quality and longer life. This is all thanks to research. There was a day when research into lung cancer lagged behind other major cancers. But that’s all changing. We’re beginning to see more and more scientists devote their careers to curing this terrible disease. Learn how you can get involved by visiting LCFAmerica.org.
For many, a cure for lung cancer is not an option unless the disease is caught early enough through screening. Regardless, the disease may respond to treatment. The earlier it’s caught, the higher the likelihood that patients will have an increased quality of life. Whether you’re a Veteran or a doctor, if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer. Watch as Veterans explain the importance of screening, then Dr. Sydney Barned walks you through a day in her life as a dancer, living with stage IV lung cancer
Dr. Moghanaki estimates that 1.5 million Veterans are eligible for lung cancer screening, but sadly, only 8% are being screened! His advice is to use telemedicine to explore your options. Navy Veteran Jim Pantelas has been living with lung cancer for nearly 20 years. He explains how various factors and exposures led to the decision to get screened and why he’s here almost two decades later.
Not only do Veterans face a higher risk of developing lung cancer because of exposure to different chemicals during their time in the service, but they also have a tendency to pursue civilian careers with higher risks after they leave the service, highlighting the importance of screening. Screening is free and covered by the VA. Then, meet Aurora Lucas and Brandi Bryant, both living with lung cancer but neither letting lung cancer define how they get to truly live their lives.
Why are only 6% of eligible Americans being screened for lung cancer when the procedure is fast and easy, and many cases are covered by insurance? Hear from several different lung cancer patient advocates describe how easy it is. Then, meet Dusty Donaldson, a 19-year cancer survivor surgically cured of the disease because of early detection. Lastly, the employees of New York’s Intercontinental Hotel have a message for you about lung cancer.
Clinical trials are tomorrow’s medicine today, which is why these studies are crucial for advancing lung cancer research. They are safe and free to participate for eligible lung cancer patients. Dr. Carbone explains more in a conversation with LCFA co-founder Kim Norris. Plus, lung cancer patient advocate Yovana Portillo is living with no evidence of disease following an early diagnosis and surgery. Hear how early detection saved her life and allowed her to create a new life with the recent birth of her son.
Researchers have identified several biomarkers that can be targeted with precision medicine to kill cancer cells. ROS 1 is one of those biomarkers, and Dr. Patil explains how recent advances are leading to renewed hope for patients with this type of lung cancer. Plus, lung cancer patient advocate and New York Times best-selling author Annabelle Gurwitch takes you to the silent disco as she explains why she still gets to do the things she loves despite a stage IV diagnosis.
