Hey Dr. D Family, Our mornings as parents are a wild ride, full of surprises. Picture this: your little one strolls into your room at 6 am like thisāwhat now? Go to the doctor or take care of it at home? ER, urgent care, or primary doctor? Go to school or stay home? Separate from siblings or no?
The first step here is to take a step back! Donāt focus on the throat! Donāt focus on the rash! Donāt spiral and start thinking about that terrible thing that happened to that kid on the news! Remember your child is a total being and not just a throat or skin. How are they feeling? How do they look? Whatās their behavior like compared to normal? Sometimes theyāre still jumping, running, and playing around. Sometimes they are so weak that they canāt even get out of bed, but most of the time, they are somewhere in between. If they appear well, you can slow this down; you have time to think. The first thing is to reassure them. Comfort them, let them know this happens, they donāt need to worry, youāve got a plan. Your kids are watching and will mirror your emotions. If you panic, they will lose the emotional anchor that makes them psychologically grounded, bold, and strong.
Next, treat their symptoms. If they have a fever or are in pain, you know exactly what to do. Make sure they arenāt suffering and that they arenāt miserable, then put your plan into motion: Get support, message the school, go see your doctor, load up on supplies (fever medication, snacks, chocolateā¦you know the essentials) and prepare for a busy couple of days. Remember this feels hard because it is, but you got this. You donāt get all those gifts on Motherās/Fatherās Day for nothing!!

Unmasking the Tamiflu Saga
The story of Tamiflu is one all Americans should hear. Itās got lobbyists, lots of cash, and plenty of secrecy. Itās a story of an industry that in 2022 spent the most on lobbying efforts beating out oil, gas, insurance, and real estate. The pharmaceutical and health products industry spends a tremendous amount of money in the US. Theyāre able to convince politicians, physicians, and most importantly the public that their miracle medications work and have few side effects. In truth, theyāre making a gargantuan amount of profits and at best the medicines do nothing for you. Thankfully, the story of Tamiflu is one that lead to pushes for more transparent publication of data and better reviews of the science. To make a long story short the makers of Tamiflu did not release full clinical study reports. In other words, we did not have all of the data and results. Once a more robust picture was painted, we found that the medicine is only truly useful for medically vulnerable populations.
Unfortunately, once the public believes in a medicine that has had million of dollars in advertisements behind it, correcting that faith becomes an enormous task left in the hands physicians who have 8-10 minutes to exam, diagnose and explain to a family what the truth is.
