Can you eat fruit when managing blood sugar? Start by understanding portions. 🍎
First, let’s clarify two different numbers:
⚖️ The number on the scale = the fruit’s total weight
🍓 15g of carbs = the carbohydrate contained in that portion
So, 15g of carbs does not mean 15g of fruit!
These different portions each contain approximately 15g of carbohydrate:
🍒 111g Rainier cherries
🍌 67g banana
🫐 106g blueberries
🍊 126g orange
Using 15g of carbohydrate as a comparison unit can help you build portion awareness, track your carb intake, and identify patterns between food and blood glucose. For people who use mealtime insulin, it may also support insulin-dose calculations based on their individualized plan.
This does not mean you can only eat 15g of carbs at a time. It also does not mean these fruits have the same nutritional value or affect everyone’s blood glucose in exactly the same way.
Understanding portions isn’t about being afraid of fruit—it’s about making more informed and confident choices.
Which fruit would you like us to measure next? 👀
Carbohydrate content may vary with fruit variety, size, and ripeness. Banana and orange weights refer to the edible portions. Follow your healthcare team’s guidance for individualized nutrition and insulin plans.
