Unlocking the Past: The Curious and Healing Power of Past Life Regression Hypnosis
By Michael Jay Berkowitz
What if the stories of your soul stretched far beyond this lifetime?
Past Life Regression (PLR) hypnosis is a journey many embark upon out of sheer curiosity—seeking to discover who they might have been in another time, another place. But for some, it becomes something more: a path to healing emotional pain, breaking lifelong patterns, or even resolving unexplained physical symptoms.
At the crossroads of mystery and therapy, PLR invites us into the deeper waters of consciousness, where memory, imagination, and healing intersect.

A Psychiatrist Who Opened the Door
The modern resurgence of PLR can be traced back to psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss, author of the best-selling book Many Lives, Many Masters. In the early 1980s, Weiss was treating a patient named Catherine using traditional psychotherapy and hypnotherapy to alleviate debilitating anxiety and phobias.
During one regression, Catherine unexpectedly began describing scenes from what appeared to be a previous life—a time and place that bore no resemblance to her current one. Exploring these memories led to dramatic improvements in her symptoms.
To Weiss’s surprise, one “past life” led to dozens, and with each one, more healing seemed to occur. “The proof,” Weiss later wrote, “was in the cure.”

My Journey Into Past Life Regression
Once I became certified as a hypnotherapist, it seemed every time I told someone what I did, they would ask if I offered Past Life Regression. We had touched on the subject in training and even experienced group regressions, but I hadn’t seriously considered practicing it.
After being asked so many times, I decided to explore it further. Around this time, my wife and I moved to Woodstock, NY, near the world-famous Omega Institute, where Brian Weiss teaches his annual PLR workshop. My wife—already a trained hypnotist—attended the intensive training first.
During practice at Omega, she regressed a fellow student suffering from chronic back pain for over 30 years. Under regression, the woman recalled a life as a young girl in early 20th-century who had been run down by a horse-drawn cart, leaving her permanently crippled, encased in an iron body brace. Because she was both a female child and unable to move on her own, she became essentially an object, talked over and moved around by adults, never being able to express a will of her own. She remained in constant pain until her early death at age 11. When she emerged from trance, her back pain was gone and she had new understanding into her lifelong sense of unworthiness.
This experience fascinated me. I dove in fully: I read every book I could find on the subject, attended certification training at an international hypnosis conference, and began running group and individual regressions. By the end of my first year, I had conducted more than 100 regressions, many resulting in life-changing breakthroughs for my clients.

What Happens in a PLR Session?
A PLR session typically begins with a gentle hypnotic induction to help the client relax deeply. We might regress through childhood memories, then to the womb just before birth, before asking the subconscious mind to guide us further back into a past life that might hold relevance to the person’s current challenges.
Clients usually describe vivid impressions: landscapes, homes, clothing, people, even emotions. At the end of each life, they often experience a “life review” and may enter a space between lives, where they receive insight and guidance.
Not everyone sees cinematic visions; some simply “know” or sense what is happening. Others receive metaphoric stories. The goal is not to prove reincarnation but to allow the subconscious mind to bring forward meaningful material for healing.

Client Stories: Transformation Beyond Time
One of my first PLR clients was a delicately-built gay man in his mid-40s who had been diagnosed with a chronic illness. We had already used traditional hypnosis to eliminate most of his physical symptoms, but some stubbornly persisted. I suggested PLR to see if the roots lay deeper.
We regressed him first into happy memories from early childhood and then to the womb, where he recalled choosing to come into his family “to bring them happiness.” Then we moved further back, into two powerful past lives.
At first, he perceived himself to be a warrior king in a medieval kingdom. Initially, he could see nothing around him. He could only hear distant voices echoing in the darkness. Gradually, the image of a cavern emerged, filled with his soldiers resting after battle, their wounds being tended by the women of the camp. He remembered being thrown from his horse, dragged painfully by the stirrup, and escaping into the forest before returning to his men. When they saw him alive, the joy and loyalty he felt from them was overwhelming. Later, on his deathbed surrounded by family, he was given a potion to ease his pain and then ascended into a “between-life” space, where a golden figure told him he was loved and that his journey wasn’t over.
In the second life, he was a tall, well-built, muscular gay man living a glamorous life in Cinque Terre, Italy, in the early 20th century. He remembered wine-soaked dinners with friends under grape arbors, swimming in the ocean, and the unconditional love of a soul mate who died young. That lifetime, in stark contrast to the bullying and shame and physical weakness he had endured in his current life, gave him a sense of pride and wholeness he had never known.
These experiences profoundly changed how he saw himself. He carried the strength of the warrior king and the confidence of the Italian aristocrat into his current life. Five years later, he told me the changes were still with him—he was more self-assured, more loving toward his family, and far more comfortable in his own skin.

Details That Validate the Experience
Some PLR experiences even bring verifiable details.
A client from Great Britain came to me searching for life direction. He had a degree in religious studies but was unsure of his career path. We regressed him through several lifetimes, most of which involved a strong connection to religion.
One life in particular stood out: he was a young woman in Sweden in the late 1800s. He described sitting in a dimly lit classroom, frustrated that he was barred from studying theology because of her gender. She longed to make a difference but died in her 50s, still regretting that she had never followed her true calling.
We then visited an even earlier life in ancient Crete, where he was a priestess preparing a festival for a goddess. He described in detail the temple courtyard adorned with flowers, the rhythmic drumming, the ceremonial offerings laid out with great care. In that lifetime, unlike the one in Sweden, she died fulfilled, having carried out his sacred duties to the end.
After our session, he was able to research many of the details of his life in Sweden in historical records—names, dates, and the very restrictions on women’s education he had described—and found uncanny matches. The validation strengthened his belief that his current calling in the field of religion was part of a soul-level pattern he had carried through lifetimes.

Other Stories of Release and Healing
Another client struggling with gender dysphoria remembered being a young boy in 19th-century Italy. He was taken from his family by the church to be castrated so his beautiful singing voice would be preserved for the choir. He rose to fame as a celebrated singer, but his true love was forbidden. Eventually, he ran away with his nobleman partner and spent the rest of his life living disguised as the man’s wife.
In a post-session discussion, they revealed they’d never heard of castrati, who were fairly common in Italian church choirs before the last century. (The Vatican banned castrati in 1903, and the last known castrato, Alberto Moreschi, died in 1922.) Reviewing this lifetime shed light on the client’s current struggles with gender identity and helped them feel more whole.
One woman with chronic financial difficulties recalled a past life as a Mother Superior in a French convent who had taken a vow of poverty. At the end of that life, surrounded by the other nuns—three of whom she recognized as people in her current life—we helped her release that vow. Soon after, she found unexpected success in business.
Another client’s session revealed an extraordinary birth memory. While regressing to the womb, she described seeing a light bulb exploding at the moment of her birth. Curious, she texted her mother during the session, who was shocked and confirmed that a bulb had indeed exploded in the delivery room—a detail she had never told anyone.

What Experts Say About PLR
Brian Weiss isn’t the only expert to study past-life memories.

• Ian Stevenson, founder and director of the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, best known for his forty years of international research, in which he amassed three thousand cases of children who claimed to remember past lives. In many cases, these memories were able to be proven true.
• Dolores Cannon, author of Between Death and Life, spent over 40 years exploring PLR and “between-life” states, documenting themes of soul groups and life purpose.
• Michael Newton, a clinical psychologist, wrote Journey of Souls, based on thousands of regressions, mapping what he believed to be the stages of existence between incarnations.
• Carol Bowman, known for her research into children’s spontaneous past-life memories, has shown that these recollections can resolve phobias and traumas even in very young children.
While mainstream psychology remains cautious, these authors’ work, combined with countless anecdotal accounts, suggests that PLR can be a powerful therapeutic tool.

Healing Through the Subconscious
You don’t need to believe in reincarnation to benefit from PLR. Some clients view the experiences as metaphorical creations of the subconscious, which can still lead to profound healing.
As Brian Weiss often says, “Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, these experiences can be therapeutic, liberating, and transformative.”
I’ve seen clients release lifelong pain, gain new confidence, and even transform their relationships after PLR. For many, the process is a reminder that we are more than our current circumstances—that we are capable of change at the deepest levels.

A Journey Worth Taking
Ultimately, Past Life Regression is about expanding the story of who we are. It invites us to see life through a larger lens, one that honors the mysteries of consciousness and the incredible capacity of the mind to heal.
Whether you discover yourself as a medieval healer, a Renaissance artist, or simply uncover a symbolic story that shifts your perspective, you may emerge changed.
And that, perhaps, is the real magic of Past Life Regression.

Phobias?
Mick lives on a small island in the Caribbean. His business takes him all over the world. Problem was, he was absolutely terrified of flying. Now he had an upcoming family function in New York. He was so stressed out, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to fly. He wanted to be happy and chill but he was a miserable mess.
As he explained in his initial email, “I’ve tried many things to help myself with these challenges and for a long time, I been able to stay ahead of them through meditation, yoga, mindfulness practices, good diets, etc. However, the fear of flying is becoming truly debilitating to the point where I may not make this trip.”
I got back to him immediately, and a couple of days after an initial Zoom consultation, we did a full one-hour Zoom hypnosis session – just two days before his flight. The session went according to plan, and as I do with all my clients, I gave him some self-hypnosis techniques to use by himself going forward.
I anxiously awaited his report, hoping everything went well.
A week later, I received this email from him: “ I can report with happiness that the flight went well. There was mild turbulence during the entire flight. Despite this, I felt at ease, especially more so after the first 20% of the flight. It's the first flight in years that I was able to look away from the window or even close my eyes. It felt like I was more ‘in control’ than ever, coming closer to understanding that flying is totally out of my control, by my mindset IS within my control. I'm going to call it an initial success. I have a few 5 minute flights this month to continue the practice and I am really looking forward to them. Thank you!”

Over the years, I have successfully worked with many phobic clients who suffered from fear of confined spaces to fear of public speaking, even addressing fears that are specific to a time and place (i.e. having to face someone they preferred to avoid; having to take an important exam.)
I recently worked with a 72 year old woman who had a lifelong fear of needles. Unfortunately, she now had late stage cancer and her only hope was an experimental treatment which required having a long needle gradually inserted into her abdomen. She was so traumatized by the first session, she cried and vomited all night from the stress. She didn’t think she could go through it again, even if it might mean her life.
She was recommended to me by a friend who believed hypnosis might help. After all, what did she have to lose?
We did one session and I suggested to her that when she was wheeled into the treatment room, she would go back to a happy, joyous memory from her past. Being a lover of musical theater who’d seen many shows over the years, her "happy place" was Broadway. This time, instead of crying, she and the nurses laughed and sang show tunes! She was calm and peaceful and felt no pain.
***
Several years ago, I had a client who was in the process of growing her own business. She had once been the protégé of a man who was a giant in her field who had humiliated her publicly at a large conference. She was determined to make a name for herself in her line of work but knew she would eventually have to face this man again. Just thinking of him triggered intense anxiety. She was to make a presentation at an upcoming conference where he would be in attendance. She desperately needed to diffuse his power over her.
We did one session together and afterwards. I provided her with an MP3 file she could listen to on her own, to build confidence and comfort in front of a crowd, and to take away the negative emotional charge from the image of her tormenter. Her presentation went amazingly well, receiving lots of praise. She was able to interact with her former teacher, without feeling any anxiety whatsoever. Now, to her, he seemed laughable, impotent.
There is no reason so suffer from fear, whether rational or irrational. If you (or a loved one) has a phobia that is interfering with your life, well-being, happiness, equilibrium, career advancement, personal relationships (emotional or even sexual), hypnosis can usually ameliorate or completely banish those negative feelings.
The beauty of this treatment is there are no negative side effects, no need for drugs, and an almost perfect rate of success in just one or two sessions.
Please feel free to get in touch for a free consultation.

The Neuroscience of Thriving: Reshaping the Brain for Healing, Well-Being, & Flourishing

“There is no ‘incurable’ disease from which someone has not recovered, even at the threshold of death.” --Dr Bernie Siegel

***

The use of medical hypnosis goes back almost two hundred years. In the 1840s, Scottish Surgeon James Esdaile performed over 300 major surgeries (amputations, removal of cataracts, removal of massive tumors) using hypnosis as the only anesthesia. Additionally, his patients’ mortality rate was reduced from 50% to 5% due to a significant reduction in post-operative shock.

In the 1950s, in the US, thousands of doctors, dentists, psychiatrists, and podiatrists were trained by hypnotist Dave Ellman in the use of hypnotic techniques. It was successfully used for anesthesia, relief from chronic pain, childbirth, allergies, depression, and even as a diagnostic tool to discover the origins of various conditions.

The American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association have recognized hypnotherapy as a valid procedure since 1958. The National Institutes of Health have recommended it as a treatment for chronic pain since 1995. And yet, these days, few turn to hypnosis when confronted with a medical condition, considering it an “alternative” therapy.

Hypnosis is not merely a complimentary or alternative method that is useful only occasionally under very specific conditions. In fact, hypnotherapy can be a first-line intervention. With certain medical conditions, it is in fact the preferred method of helping clients to achieve success, wellness, and contentment.

Sometimes people say, “But hypnosis can’t cure this or that condition.” And while hypnosis might not be effective 100% of the time, neither is modern medicine (i.e. surgery, medication, physical therapy) although they often come with serious side effects.

Mountains of research actually indicate that hypnotherapy is an effective tool, often in combination with other approaches, that can lead to cures, remissions, reduction of pain. It can also be used as the primary intervention to help some people become free of chronic conditions that limit their lives.

Hypnotherapy is being used with great success, helping cancer patients, burn clients, arthritis sufferers, those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases, migraine headaches. It’s been useful in pre-surgical preparation and post-surgical recovery. Hypnosis can lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, increase white blood cell counts.

Recent discoveries in neuroscience and mind-body medicine are changing how we look at illness and healing. Western medicine has traditionally made a distinction between mind and body, as if they are two distinct things. The Eastern model holds that the mind and body are one and inseparable. Based on my own experience, upheld by recent research, I believe this to be true.

I came to medical hypnosis almost by accident. About 5 years ago, just 3 months after receiving my certification as a hypnotherapist, I was working with a client on some anxiety and anger issues. She was so amazed by how powerful hypnosis was in dealing with her problem that she asked if perhaps I could help her husband. He had been diagnosed with a rare neurological degenerative disease similar to ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was told that it was incurable and that there was no drug or treatment available. He had been steadily deteriorating for 12 years and he was not expected to survive much longer. He was confined to a wheelchair and had little control over his face. He could no longer speak, was only able to mumble garbled sounds and he drooled constantly. He suffered from tics, and often got locked into repetitive movements. Additionally, he had trouble sleeping and had no motivation to do his physical therapy, virtually his only treatment.

Her hope was that I could possibly help with the repetitive movements as those were the most alarming symptom. If he was at the dinner table and accidentally hit the table with his knife, he would repeat the motion again and again, faster and harder and she couldn’t stop it. At first, I didn’t think this was something I could deal with but I ran it by my hypnosis teacher and she encouraged me to work with him, noting that hypnosis had already been used successfully to eliminate tremors in Parkinson’s patients. And of course, it certainly wasn’t going to hurt him.

They couldn’t travel to me so I drove the 2 ½ hours to them. Though unable to speak, I was able to get him into a deep trance state. After a 45 minute first session, I was able to eliminate the tremors and repetitive movements and get him to sleep more soundly. A week later, we did a second session. As I brought him out of trance I asked him how he felt and he clearly replied, “I feel good”. His wife pulled me aside and said, “I think I’m imagining things, I thought he just spoke!” I assured her that he had indeed and as we were talking, he got out of his wheelchair and walked over to us! Her jaw nearly hit the floor. After an additional few sessions, it was hard to tell he was unwell at all. Soon, he was back to hiking, gardening, walking the dog. Now, nearly five years later, I recently spoke to his wife and she told me he had just gone for a checkup and the doctor had told her his vital signs were perfect, he wished he was as healthy.

A few months later, my wife was speaking to a relative who mentioned that their husband had been diagnosed with an adult-onset form of muscular dystrophy. He suffered from chronic fatigue, brain fog, muscular rigidity, muscular and joint pain, and digestive issues. She suggested he work with me and he agreed. A young man of 45, he was in a bit of a panic as he was involved in a major project and yet could barely manage to get out of bed in the morning or focus enough to be productive. He emailed me the morning after the first session to say he awoke energized and focused, without the now familiar pains and stiffness. We did several additional sessions, addressing not only his illness but deep emotional issues. I heard from him two weeks ago and he reported still feeling great, nearly four years later, and the insights he gained during the session had impacted his life deeply and positively.
It seemed the universe was pushing me to focus my practice in this direction. It’s been incredibly rewarding work.

***

“…deep down, I still knew something wasn’t right. As magnificent as Western medicine is for treating emergencies and stabilizing extreme conditions, it did little or nothing to address what I was beginning to suspect was the deeper causes of many illnesses. Somewhere along the way, I had started asking my patients the most important question in medicine (that is, after the diagnosis has been secure)- namely, “Why today?” Why, when the world is bathed in bacteria, did you get pneumonia today? Why, when your cardiac lesion has been accumulating for years, did you have a heart attack today? You might have come down with appendicitis a week ago or a week from now- why today?

To my surprise, virtually every patient I asked had a plausible reason: “My mother in law just moved in with us.” “I need to get out of this job, no matter what.” “I just learned I was conned, and now I’m broke.” Psychological reasons for physical maladies kept cropping up, again and again. And yet, my beloved science gave no ground to mental causes. Nothing in my training even allowed for the possibility. And if mental causes were excluded, what possible part could noetic (meaning of or pertaining to the mind) factors play in a cure?

At the time, of course, I had no idea these nagging questions would lead me to hypnosis and compel me to untangle the tragic misconception that had relegated that world to the fringe. Nor could I have realized, then, that finally understanding hypnosis would allow me to unlock the secrets of placebo and nocebo, and more broadly, to understand the impact of ideas on health and healing.”

It’s clear to me, based on my training, my readings of the latest research, and my personal experience, that the body has an amazing innate capacity to self-heal, and that we can control that mechanism through our minds. Hypnosis gives us a doorway into that mechanism.

This page is a landing place for a project I’m working on. While I continue to use my hypnotherapy skills to support clients dealing with chronic conditions, illness, and pain, I hope to push the envelope further, to see how far we can go to get clients to a place of true wellness.

I am offering to work with anyone suffering from intractable illness, no matter what stage of their journey they are at, free of charge. Some of our work together will be proven methods of palliative care being used by hypnotherapists all over the world. However, some of our work will be experimental, based on the research showing the mental and spiritual shifts that have been found as a common factor among those patients who experience radical remission. The good news is that there is no downside, no harmful side effects from the work we do together. The worst outcome is that you will feel more relaxed, more at ease than when we started. If you get some positive benefit from what we do together, you can choose to reimburse me.

“Is there scientific data to support the seemingly miraculous stories of self-healing that float around? You betcha. There’s proof that you can radically alter your body’s physiology just by changing your mind. There’s also proof that you can make yourself sick when your mind thinks unhealthy thoughts. And it’s not just mental. It’s physiological.”
