Melissa Thomas was three months into her new job scheduling patients at Huntsman Cancer Institute when she herself received a thyroid cancer diagnosis.

"My coworkers were so reassuring," she says. "It was so nice to be surrounded by people that were supportive and had experience helping people with cancer."

Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery this week to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. His doctors described the operation as successful and without complications. Just days later, the Vatican shared that he has resumed his work activities, concelebrating mass on Thursday and meeting with a senior Vatican official from the hospital.

Pope Leo’s story reminds us that work means different things for different people. While we don't know him personally, we can imagine he is someone who derives meaning from his role and who wanted to get back to it just like so many in our community have shared over the years. In fact, the last time we asked this question in our 2023 Harris Poll, nearly two-thirds (65%) agreed that people with cancer are aided in their treatment and recovery by working.

Actress Constance Zimmer revealed she was diagnosed with cancer this past March. She kept her diagnosis private at the time, but disclosed in an Instagram post this week.

"I was out on a very public press tour for Love Story, while keeping my diagnosis and treatment private. I then followed my surgeries with radiation, while celebrating my Emmy Nomination."

ABC News correspondent Will Reeve has shared his testicular cancer diagnosis. After noticing a lump in April, he underwent surgery and rounds of chemotherapy. As of early September he is cancer-free and back at work at ABC.

25 years ago, Cancer and Careers launched with one staff member and a basic website, built to answer the questions people face after a diagnosis like: How do I tell my boss? What are my rights? Am I allowed to keep working?

That simple website has grown into two websites (in English and Spanish) serving hundreds of thousands of people every year with informational articles, a library of publications, Ask a Career Coach forum, our resume review program, a blog and newsfeed to keep people up-to-date on current conversations around the intersection of work and cancer, an event calendar and so much more. What hasn't changed is our purpose: eliminating fear and uncertainty for people navigating work after a cancer diagnosis.

Melanie Rudolph was working as a fundraiser for St. Tammany Cancer Center when she herself was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma. After two years of treatment, she is back at work organizing a gala raising money for St. Tammany.

"I think this has fueled me to continue to do what I do. It is just so important that we continue funding and do everything that we possibly can to hopefully one day find a cure for cancer."
