World AIDS Day is a time to reflect on those we have lost, on those who have been impacted, and on those who bravely fought – and are still fighting – to get access to HIV treatment. It's also a time to renew our commitment to investing in health infrastructure to support the most vulnerable members of our communities. Today and each day, we recommit ourselves to the critical work of caring for those impacted by HIV while advocating for health justice for all those outside of our doors. https://callen-lorde.org/HIV/

Since the founding of Community Health Project (CHP) in 1985, the need for affirming and LGBTQ-centric care grew exponentially. With the onset of the AIDS crisis, CHP stepped up in many ways to meet the needs of our communities. This included the creation of an AIDS risk assessment program, and community-specific programs like the Le***an Health Program (LHF), Trans Health Program (THE), and Health Outreach to Teens (HOTT) program. Ultimately, these initiatives helped build the foundation of Callen-Lorde's care model: integrative, community-centric, and provided regardless of ability to pay.

It took place on October 26, 1996 in Boston, Massachusetts outside a conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

10/06/2023

Callen-Lorde's grassroots heritage dates back over 50 years ago, with the creation of volunteer clinics that provided care to LGBTQ+ people. In 1983, these entities merged to form Community Health Project (CHP), a mostly volunteer-staffed episodic care program that housed the nation's first community-based HIV primary care clinic.

Today, we carry this tradition forward at our Callen-Lorde locations, including our newest location in Downtown Brooklyn, where we are currently accepting new patients, regardless of ability to pay.

We are proud to be a part of LGBTQ+ history and are grateful to be a part of this community.

🏳️‍🌈 October commemorates LGBTQ History Month 🏳️‍⚧️

Callen-Lorde's own grassroots history begins in 1969 – just shy of 6 months after Stonewall. Two young doctors started the St. Mark's Clinic (also known as 'St. Mark's Free Clinic' and 'St. Mark's Community Clinic). The mission of the clinic was to provide free health care to young people and people in the neighborhood.

We are proud of our collective history and to be a part of the LGBTQ+ health centers across the country that help make history each and every day.
