I’m convinced every horse gets temporarily possessed by one of these personalities during bodywork. 👻

🧟 The Zombie: Eyes closed, lower lip hanging, and no longer available for questions.

👻 The Friendly Ghost: Quietly floats into another dimension while technically remaining in the barn.

🐺 The Werewolf: Starts suspicious and guarded, then suddenly transforms into a complete puddle.

🧙 The Witch: Knows exactly where I’m going before my hand even gets there.

🧛 The Vampire: Processes every feeling mouth-first and needs to sink their teeth into something when they have a lot to express.

Every horse settles into a session differently. That’s why I adjust my approach based on what each horse is comfortable with and how they respond that day.

When things start going well, that doesn’t mean we stop doing the things that helped them get there.

I understand why it happens. The horse feels better, so it seems like the work is done. But feeling better doesn’t always mean they’re completely on the other side of it.

I rarely want to see a horse randomly. A lot can change in a month, for better or worse, which is why monthly is usually the longest I recommend between sessions for the working horses I see.

Consistent bodywork helps us keep up with changes in the soft tissue, limit how much compensation builds, and continue showing the horse a better way to organize their body and move.

The schedule will look different for every horse. The point isn’t to chase perfection or constantly do more. It’s to give those positive changes a chance to become the horse’s new pattern.

If your horse is feeling good right now, that is the time to help them maintain it.

When I say I like working as a team, I mean it.

I have several clients where I communicate with the veterinarian, chiropractor, farrier, saddle fitter, and trainer. We share what we’re seeing so we can all stay on the same chapter when it comes to the horse.

That doesn’t mean everyone has to agree on every small detail. It means I’m honest about what I notice, I know my place within the team, and if I believe something needs another professional’s attention, I say so.

Bodywork is one part of the bigger picture. I’m never going to pretend it is the answer to everything.

I would rather ask the question, have the conversation, and bring in the right person than try to have every answer myself.

Is your horse’s care team communicating?

October looks different for every horse.

Some are showing more. Some are entering a harder stage of training. Some have something persistent that still hasn’t quite made sense. Others are feeling great and need support to keep doing what they’re doing.

That is why I don’t believe in giving every horse the same session or putting every horse on the same schedule. I’m always learning and refining my work so I can better help the horse standing in front of me.

With cooler weather here and show season picking up, now is a good time to establish a consistent bodywork schedule based on what your horse is actually doing and how they respond.

This coming week is fully booked, and I’m now scheduling for next week and the rest of October.

What stage of work is your horse in right now?

It’s that time of year again! 🎃
No tricks, just treats, spellbinding wellness, cooler weather, and the start of another busy show season.
October is my favorite month, and there is so much to celebrate. Halloween, returning seasonal clients and their horses, new faces, and another season of doing work I truly love.
What are you celebrating this October?

The session starts before I ever touch your horse.

I am already watching how they stand, where they place their weight, how they walk and turn, their expression and breathing, and how they interact with the people and environment around them.

A guarded posture, an unloaded limb, or a heightened nervous system may change how I begin. It may also lead me to ask different questions before moving forward.

You may have booked a specific therapy, but I do not arrive committed to a fixed routine. If your horse shows us they need something different that day, we can adjust the plan.

Observation is not something I do before the work. It is part of the work.

Sometimes finding one answer is more comforting than accurate.

When something changes with a horse, we naturally want every clue to point toward one clear explanation.

But more than one thing can be true.

Two patterns may be connected. They may influence each other. Or they may simply be happening at the same time.

I see this during bodywork sessions, and I experience it with my own horse too. What I notice through movement, palpation, and the horse’s responses may add an important piece to the picture, but it does not automatically explain everything they are showing us.

That is why I stay curious rather than forcing every finding into the same story. Sometimes a session brings greater clarity. Other times, it shows us what deserves closer attention or needs to be tracked over time.

The goal is not to make the situation more complicated. It is to leave room for new information before deciding we already have the answer.

Have you ever found that more than one thing was going on with your horse?

Following a recent loss in the veterinary community, I think it is important for all of us to pause.

We each carry struggles that others may never see. We do not always know what someone is facing behind the capable, professional, or composed version of themselves they show the world.

It pays to lead with kindness and remember that we are all human.

Check on your people. Ask again when “I’m fine” does not feel like the whole answer. Listen without judgment, and help make asking for support feel safe.

If you are the one struggling, you do not have to carry it alone.

Not One More Vet offers support and resources for veterinary professionals at nomv.org. In the United States, call or text 988 for free, confidential crisis support.
