One hot summer day, while stationed at Fort Hood as an Army mechanic, a Lieutenant pulled me off the line. He sat me down in the office directly in front of the blasting air conditioner and said: "Honea, you could do almost anything, if youโ€™d only slow down."

Years later, my father shared a nearly identical memory from Vietnam. A Navy Officer had told him: "Honea, you could be an admiral, if you'd only slow down." Apparently, rushing is in the bloodline.

After eight years in the Army, I decided to take up Capoeiraโ€”Brazilian dance fighting. Starting an acrobatic martial art in your late twenties after years of military wear and tear is an aggressive choice. My wrists and knuckles have never fully forgiven me for the sheer volume of cartwheels and handstands on hard floors, though I finally learned how to dance, and Iโ€™m grateful for that. But during one workshop, Mestre Doutor pulled me aside after watching a transition. "When you go down, you keep slamming your hands," he said. "Slow down, and youโ€™ll stop injuring yourself."

The message kept echoing, waiting for me to actually listen.

In clinical practice, we often refer to Chinese Medicine as "slow medicine." Acupuncture, herbal formulas, bodywork, and Qigong doesn't operate on the logic of an emergency room; they take time to reset the nervous system, rebuild vitality, and take root. But the true medicine isn't just the treatment on the table. The real value is learning how to embody that rhythm outside the clinic.

My body still delivers regular pop quizzes. Just recently, fueled by weekend coffee and sudden ambition, I went out to yank a stubborn primrose bush from the dirt and tweaked my back. A familiar flash of pain, and a familiar lesson.

Qigong is not a 45-minute routine you check off every few days. It is the way you bend your knees to pull a w**d. It is the way your feet meet the floor when you step out of bed, and the space you leave between an impulse and an action. It is the conscious decision to move with structural ease instead of brute force.

Slowing down isn't about losing momentumโ€”it's about finally arriving in your body before you demand it to move.

Thank you, body, for the reminder.

Be well.

When multiple areas of our body feel tight or our thoughts feel fragmented, we need a movement that integrates everything back together.

โ€‹The San Jiao sound works like a cool shower for your nervous system. By coordinating a downward hand press with the audible "Sheeee" frequency, you help regulate breathing, digestion, and temperature, leaving your entire system calm, centered, and balanced.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Stand tall with grounded feet
๐Ÿ”น Inhale to gather overhead
๐Ÿ”น Descending "Sheeee" exhale to smooth and settle your energy

โ€‹๐Ÿ‘‡ Practice along with the Short above!

When fear or chronic stress takes over, our nervous system instinctively contracts the lower back and pulls us off balance.

โ€‹The Kidney Healing Sound directly targets this stress reflex. By softening the knees, slightly bowing the spine, and producing the deep acoustic vibration of "Foo," you signal to your adrenal glands and lumbar muscles that it is safe to let go and settle back into stability.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Soft stance with feet together
๐Ÿ”น Hands resting gently above the knees
๐Ÿ”น Deep "Foo" resonance feeding the lower back

When we carry sadness or emotional strain, the chest tends to collapse inward, restricting natural breath.

โ€‹The Lung Healing Sound uses physical opening and acoustic vibration to manually break up tightness across the ribcage and upper lungs. Pairing a soft "Shhh" exhale with conscious posture creates immediate room for full diaphragmatic breathing,
helping you feel unburdened and grounded.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Stand tall with soft, relaxed joints
๐Ÿ”น Open the upper chest to expand lung volume
๐Ÿ”น Soft "Shhh" exhale to release held heaviness

When we overthink, we disconnect from our physical body and live entirely "in our heads."

โ€‹The Spleen Healing Sound provides a physical anchor for scattered mental energy. By stretching the left flank and vibrating the spleen/digestive area with the "Who" sound, you manually interrupt mental spiraling and signal your nervous system to ground and stabilize.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Soften the knees and drop the shoulders
๐Ÿ”น Gentle reach to open the left flank
๐Ÿ”น Deep, resonant "Who" exhale to ground your energy

Anxiety often causes our chest to contract, making our breathing shallow and rapid.

โ€‹The Heart Healing Sound uses physical posture and acoustic vibration to manually decompress the chest space. Making the audible "Ha" sound acts like an intentional sigh of reliefโ€”stimulating the vagus nerve and giving your chest permission to soften and open up.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Stand grounded with soft joints
๐Ÿ”น Open the arms wide to create space
๐Ÿ”น Exhale with a steady, releasing "Ha" tone

Feeling irritable, frustrated, or holding onto tension in your ribcage? ๐ŸŒฟ

โ€‹In traditional Qigong and East Asian medicine, held frustration and anger are closely connected with the Liver system and the lateral ribcage [00:12].

The traditional Liver Healing Sound ("Shoo") uses gentle lateral stretching and vocal vibration to discharge pent-up emotional heat and restore calm [00:22].

โ€‹How to Practice:
๐Ÿฅ‹ Stance: Stand shoulder-width apart with a soft bend in your knees and relaxed shoulders [00:05].
๐ŸŒฟ Side Stretch: Inhale as your right arm floats up and overhead into a gentle lateral lean [00:16].
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Make the Sound: Exhale with a soft, steady "Shoo" sound, feeling the vibrational resonance descend through your ribs and liver area [00:22, 00:29].

๐Ÿ”„ Repeat: Repeat 3 to 6 times whenever you feel stress or irritability spike [00:50].

Overthinking is often just stuck energy looking for an exit route.

โ€‹In Qigong, physical movement paired with clear visualization helps down-regulate a racing mind. "Pulling the Chain" guides excessive mental chatter down through the body and discharges it into the earth, leaving you feeling calm, centered, and physically present.

โ€‹๐Ÿ”น Ground your feet and soften the knees
๐Ÿ”น Alternate hands in a smooth, vertical pull
๐Ÿ”น Let your breath find a slow, steady rhythm

โ€‹๐Ÿ‘‡ Practice along with the Short above!
