Currently the Learning Disabilities Association of Illinois is looking for parents who might want to share a very short story about how testing done in the state of Illinois has impacted their children and how the increase in testing being proposed by the Illinois State Board of Education will impact their children. Would anyone be willing to send me a short 2-3 sentence statement about testing of children with learning disabilities and if so, could you send it to this email by Monday morning.
Thank you for your consideration.

CAST: A Statement on The National Apprenticeship Act of 2020

POST-SECONDARY OPPORTUNITY! The newly passed National Apprenticeship Act of 2020 should be leveraged to open more education opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Parents, teachers and young adults with LD need to learn more about it and ask questions about apprenticeship programs in general.

CAST applauds the passage of The National Apprenticeship Act of 2020 (H.R. 8294), a bill designed to improve access to apprenticeships authorized and funded through the U.S. Department of Labor. CAST is especially pleased the bill includes provisions that improve the accessibility of apprenticesh...

Alert!!

Please send an email this week to members of the Illinois State Board of Education and the co-chairs of the Joint Committee on Administrative rules asking them to delay action on proposed regulations for needed training for interpreters for parents who are non-English speaking during IEPs. On Thursday, November 19, the Illinois State Board of Education plans to take final action on the training of interpreters for parents who are non-English speaking who want to participate in their children’s IEPs. We have worked hard to pass the legislation to allow this, but the actions of the State Board of Education are not adequate to meet this critical need and further discussion is needed.

We believe that what ISBE is proposing for an orientation of only 15 hours for an interpreter is inadequate. The complex topic of special education, issues related to confidentiality, and the role the parent plays in the IEP process, require more than 15 hours. We urge ISBE to continue discussions with experts in the field of bilingual and special education before making final recommendations that could result in inadequate interpreting for parents. Families must have access to participate in the individualized education programming for their children.

Please send an email to any of the following:

Please read this about dangerous chemicals in our foods.

Our new study found there may be a toxic secret in your burger wrapper or salad bowl. Testing found levels of fluorine suggesting treatment with PFAS chemicals in nearly half of the packaging tested from top chains.

6 Things Anti-Racist Educators Want Grown-ups to Know about Teaching and Raising Kids - MindShift

Addressing systemic racism with our kids essential. Difference does not make a person instantly bad or less human than another person.

For adults accustomed to the false paradigm of “not seeing color,” starting to address systemic racism will be uncomfortable. By sitting with that discomfort, teachers and parents demonstrate the importance of these issues and model a willingness to make mistakes.

In a study, six percent of participants said they used captions as aids for a learning or physical disability. (Source: https://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/8/a-rising-tide-how-closed-captions-can-benefit-all-students) Therefore the logical conclusion is that open captions in movie theaters could benefit some people with learning disabilities. So, you may wish to sign and share the petition for open captions in movie theaters that is at https://tinyurl.com/ocmoviesnow. 592 from Illinois have already signed it (out of over 20,000.)
