Are you considering using a GLP-1 medication for weight loss? Wondering if its "too good to be true?" Whether or not it is really depends on many factors.

I've put together this simple overview based on the current body of evidence, and my experience and insights as a nutrition coach who specializes in weight management.

My biggest take away is that using a GLP-1 drug just so you can lose some weight is only going to serve you in the short term. Like any extreme diet or fast weight loss hack, they typically fail to address the underlying reasons people gain and struggle to lose weight in the first place- balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and lifestyle-behavior management.

In my humble, yet professional and experienced opinion: By learning about yourself, your behavior patterns, and learning healthy living skills, you stand a much better chance of breaking free from diets and medications for good. Your body has everything it needs to eat and enjoy a balanced diet, move naturally and achieve optimal body composition and health. The question just lies in your readiness, willingness and ability to advocate for yourself and undergo the personal change process. I know it can be hard, but its possible.

With all that said, I absolutely respect anyone's individual choice, and in the cases of my clients who choose to use GLP-1 medications, I'm available with unconditional positive regard to help them stay strong and help them make the most of the process -- to come out healthier, happier, and more empowered on the other side. The choice to use a prescription medication is between you and your licensed medical provider. My comments here are just meant to provide my perspective.

Today is a very special Father’s Day because it is the first (of many) that I get to wish a happy Father’s Day to my son, Ashton!
Watching Ashton embrace fatherhood has been the highlight of my life over the past several months. He is such a great dad! Super proud of you Ashton. Thanks for choosing me to be your dad. I seriously lucked out. I was super young and not exactly prepared when you decided to show up and rock my world…but we figured it out. Thanks for always rolling with the punches. And thank you for embracing Ricky’s love as your second dad. 🙂
Losing my own dad at age 7 1/2 and officially making me an orphan was traumatic. To this day I still experience the deeply imbedded effects of such a loss. Being able to experience fatherhood, and to also be a grandfather really helps to mend the trauma. I know my dad would be super proud of Ashton too, if he was still around.

Did you know that grinding yourself with a strict diet is actually not effective? Yep! There is loads of research-- not to mention my own professional experience coaching hundreds of people in health and weight loss-- that shows that strict dieting only works for a short time. Then what happens?
Answer: the typical dieter falls back into old patterns because they DIDN'T LEARN the SKILLS needed to make it sustainable.
Getting really good at eating lean sources of protein (this can be from plants and-or animals-- YOU get to decide) is one of the most important skills to learn if you want long lasting metabolic vitality and healthy, happy weight and body composition outcomes.

Hey, just checking in on your Monday morning mindset. So...how are you doing? Have you been comparing yourself to others a little too much lately? Whereas it can be helpful to get inspiration from the (apparent) success of others, it can also backfire when you find that success is making you feel bad about your own accomplishments.

Keep in mind that everyone has challenges and everyone is vulnerable to the same human conditions that you are. Try not to fall into the trap of thinking you aren't good enough, or that there is anything wrong with the way you have decided to run your life and affairs.

Keep that growth mindset in the forefront of your thinking this week and see how much better you can feel about yourself, your body, and your life. You've totally got this!

Are you a ZOMBIE EATER? Yikes! What the heck is that?!? Sounds scary, right? Well, actually, many people "zombie eat" throughout the day and don't really realize it. Hence the word "zombie!" It's a lighthearted term we use in my nutrition coaching room to help call out unwanted eating behaviors. 😉 😂

If you get to the end of the day and find that all you did was mindlessly grab random bits of food all day, but don't feel genuinely nourished and satiated, you can probably conclude that your INNER ZOMBIE took over your eating for the day!

Here is the thing: DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP about it. Just use some simple guidelines to make sure your daily eating is planned, regulated, and properly nourished. And keep that inner zombie far away!
