The doctor is OUT.
Please leave a message. We will talk Thursday or Friday.
Let the woman wander around her farm and talk to her chickens.
Dr. Weisman does not doctor on Wednesdays.
Why?
Because I am trying very hard to practice what I preach.
I spend a lot of time telling my chronic illness patients:
Learn your limits.
Rest BEFORE you crash.
Stop feeling guilty for needing recovery time.
Build a schedule your body can actually sustain.
And unfortunately, that advice also applies to the doctor giving it.
So Wednesdays are sacred.
Sometimes I rest. Sometimes I have my own appointments. Sometimes I do farm stuff. Sometimes I catch up on life.
And sometimes I accomplish absolutely nothing.
I know my schedule isn't always convenient.
I don't do 7 AM appointments. Or 8 AM. Or 9 AM.
I don't doctor before 10am.
I've got Mom duty. I've got farm duty. I've got a body that has made it abundantly clear that it will file a formal complaint if I pretend I don't have limits. (The Flare Club)
So I make it work differently.
I stay late every Thursday. I offer Saturday appointments once a month. And during the days I'm working, I try damn hard to be present with the person sitting in front of me.
That also means sometimes my staff has to tell you:
“We'll get back to you within two business days.”
Do I wish I could work faster, longer and harder?
Yep.
I've tried that version of medicine.
It nearly broke me.
I know what happens when I keep borrowing energy from tomorrow: eventually the bill comes due.
So I'm not building my medical practice around how much work I can possibly squeeze out of myself.
I'm building it around how I can keep doing this well.
Because I don't want to be the doctor who tells you to respect your body, establish boundaries, rest and prevent burnout...
..while I'm running myself straight into the ground.
So on Wednesdays:
The doctor is OUT.
Leave a message.
We'll get back to you.
And please don't worry about me.
I'm probably with the chickens. 🐔
