Rogers Veterinary Service

We are hiring a Veterinary Assistant to help the to the RVS team! Now that we have a second veterinarian and service truck to better meet the demands in our area, we need an additional team member. To learn more and apply, please use this link: https://tdc.renhead.jobs/job/89 or Email: [email protected]

As we have previously done, we are working with a hiring consultant, Bruce Hohensee, to help us with the hiring process. Please share this with someone you believe would be a good fit within RVS. After screening and interviewing prospective candidates, a few will be invited to ride-along for a day to experience what the role entails firsthand. We hope to have this new team member join our team in January.

Q: What type of feed should not be given to this cute wether goat?

A: GRAIN! But, tin cans, laundry, lead, cherry pies, and candy should also be avoided. :)

Why: Grains are high in phosphorus, which can lead to the formation of stones in the bladder. A wether goat has a long narrow urethra where bladder stones can easily lodge and cause a urinary blockage. Buck goats are also prone to this condition, but less so than wethers as their urethra is typically larger. A urinary blockage is a life-threatening emergency. Even a small amount of grain can lead to stones and most wether goats don’t need grain to maintain good body condition. This why we strongly recommend against feeding grain, especially to pet wether goats. Alfalfa is high in calcium and too much alfalfa can lead to a different type of bladder stone. Care must also be taken to not overfeed alfalfa, though a small amount is generally ok. The best diet for a pet wether goat is lots of grass, browse, and fresh clean water, grass hay if needed, and free choice quality loose trace mineral & loose salt.

The answer is... it is a MYTH!
It is rare for rolling to cause an intestinal twist and a horse with colic wants to roll because they are already in pain from gas, impaction, colon displacement, or a torsion (twist). However, it is OK to walk a horse with colic for the following reasons. Sometimes walking for 10-15 minutes can help relieve gas that is causing a mild colic, walking can keep a horse from trashing around and causing other injuries to itself, and walking does give you something to do while waiting for your veterinarian to arrive. :) It is important to NOT walk your horse to exhaustion, though, and it is just fine to let a horse with colic stand or rest if they are not thrashing around.

Fact or Myth? A horse with colic should be walked to prevent rolling and to keep its intestines from twisting.

Looking for a new vet to serve in the Springfield area do you travel this far, have been a client of Jeff Pelton for the last 8-10 years I normally can handle things but sometimes I need one of your assistants. I have beef cattle goats and a few sheep. What are your prices for this far out from your home base
