Dementia may change memory, but it does not erase identity, culture, or belonging.

For elders and families, meaningful support begins with learning what brings comfort: the people they trust, the routines that feel familiar, and the cultural connections that help them feel at home.

Research highlighted by the Indian Health Service reinforces the importance of dementia-caregiving support that honors Indigenous knowledge, family involvement, community strengths, and cultural traditions.

At Soaring Eagles, honoring those we serve means seeing the whole person and supporting care that keeps culture, family, and community close.

Some of the most important care work happens between an appointment and home.

During National Case Management Week, we recognize the professionals who help people and families understand their options, coordinate services, and turn complex information into a workable plan.

To the case managers and social workers who listen carefully, follow up, and keep each person’s goals at the center: thank you. Your partnership helps care come full circle.

The orange shirt has a story.

It comes from Survivor Phyllis Webstad. When she arrived at a residential school in 1973, the new orange shirt her grandmother had given her was taken away. It became a symbol of what was taken from so many Indigenous children.

In Canada, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which coincides with Orange Shirt Day. The day is also observed in the United States as a time to remember the legacy of Indigenous boarding schools. During this time, Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their homes, families, and communities and placed in residential schools. These government- and church-run schools were created to separate children from their cultures and assimilate them. Children were often forbidden from speaking their languages, practicing their traditions, or staying connected to their families. Many experienced abuse and neglect. Many never returned home.

Today, we remember and honor the survivors, their families, and the generations who continue to carry this history.

Honoring those we serve means listening to the stories people choose to share, respecting the trauma and historical harm that may shape their experiences, and building trust through consistent, culturally responsive care.

For many Indigenous individuals and families, there are real reasons to be cautious of systems that have caused harm before. We do not expect trust—we work to earn it through humility, respect, and relationship.

Where a person lives should not prevent them from receiving care and support close to home.

A new $74 million federal investment will support six regional health hubs serving rural, frontier, and Tribal communities across New Mexico. The hubs will work with local providers and community partners to identify needs and plan ways to bring more services closer to the people who need them.

At Soaring Eagles, we know how important it is for care to respect each community, culture, and individual journey. We’ll continue following this work as the plans take shape.

This Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we celebrate the caregivers and direct-support professionals who help people live safely, confidently, and meaningfully at home and in their communities.

Their work can include helping with daily routines, personal care, meals, transportation, appointments, and community involvement. But their impact reaches far beyond those tasks. DSPs offer companionship, encouragement, respect, and dependable support that helps people maintain their independence and pursue the life they choose.

To our Soaring Eagles team: thank you for the thoughtful care you provide and the difference you make for the people and families you support.
