I shared this piece with a group of women I’d just facilitated breathwork for, and one of them saw herself in it. She enjoys her work and the people she works with and is being drawn toward something else entirely. She grew up hearing that we all have things in our jobs we don’t like, which is a hard message to step away from. She doesn’t know what the next step looks like, and she signed up for a course anyway. I was proud of her.

This week I counted what I’d been making, homemade granola, a vision sketched out from a breathwork session, a website I was redoing, a spreadsheet for a financial analysis, and I hadn’t seen any of it as creation before.

There’s also something bigger asking to be made, and that’s where my body tightens. The small things don’t close the distance, they show me I’m already standing on the path.

He knelt down on the floor in front of me and told me he hadn’t been sleeping.

Not because anything was wrong between us. Because he knows what I want to build, and he felt like he hadn’t done enough to help me get there. He offered me a way to finally do it, and instead of saying yes, I found six reasons why not.

He didn’t let me get away with any of them. He looked at me and named exactly whose voice I was actually speaking in.

I wasn’t taught that on purpose, and I don’t carry any resentment toward where it came from. Somebody handed me the tools they had. But the teaching outlived the reason for it, and now it shows up as a body that tightens the second something bigger than comfortable gets within reach.

If you felt something reading this, that’s not an accident. That’s the part of you still checking whether it’s safe to want more.

She didn’t rush to explain it. She let it sit, the way she always does, a pace that isn’t performance, it’s just what happens when someone isn’t racing you toward her next point.

Afterward, she talked about the difference between what’s divinely safe and what’s only human safety, the kind that keeps you small because small kept you alive once. She called this a membrane, not a wall. Resistance as the exact opposite force of expansion, which means the ache of it is proof something is actually trying to grow.

I’ve sat across from a lot of facilitators, and she is one who can hold my whole vision instead of just my nervous system.

That’s this work. Not managing the moment but meeting the woman underneath it.
