Delta Verde Laboratory is committed to serving the medical marijuana community by providing potency testing as well as testing to ensure that all materials, both botanicals and edibles, are safe and free of hazardous solvents, pesticides, mold, and bacteria. Delta Verde Laboratory was founded by James Clark, Ph. D. Dr. Clark, an ASU graduate and veteran of the Arizona State Laboratory, brings years of knowledge and expertise to the laboratory.

SB 1494 HAS PASSED! What does it mean for the cannabis community? First, it's a victory for consumer protection. Testing of cannabis products will be required for potency & safety. The details remain to be worked out, and they will not take effect until November of 2020, so growers, extractors, formulators, dispensary owners, etc. will have plenty of time to prepare, if they are not already testing.
Meanwhile, at Delta Verde Laboratory, it will be business as usual: same high quality service, and the same pricing. This is not an opportunity for price gouging. In any event, robust competition between labs will ensure high quality and fair prices.
So if you are not currently testing your products, this is a great time to come by our lab and check out what we do and how we can help prepare you for the changing cannabis scene in Arizona! James Clark, Owner & Lab Director, Delta Verde Laboratory.

REMINDER TO ALL OUR CHERISHED CUSTOMERS: Once samples have been in the lab for testing, we cannot return any unused portion for human consumption.
Why do we have this policy? It's for your health & safety. Just as we do not allow eating & drinking in the lab, to prevent accidental exposure to and ingestion of laboratory chemicals, we do not want our customers to be exposed to these chemicals either. We will work with you before sample submittal so that you can submit only enough material to ensure proper testing. LET'S BE SAFE!

A major milestone for Delta Verde Laboratory: our first ISO 17025 audited has been completed, with no major non-conformances and only 6 minor non-conformances. The assessor's recommendation: "Based on this assessment, the laboratory should be granted accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 upon acceptance of the corrective actions to the noted non-conformances."

SAME TEST, NEW NAME: "Rapid Yeast & Mold" is now "Total Yeast & Mold". We've changed the name of this important microbial test to keep in line with the usage is most other labs. "Rapid Yeast & Mold" is actually 3M's name for their Petrifilm test method. It's a 48-hour test, which may not seem rapid, but previous methods sometimes required 5 - 7 days!

BIG WINS FOR CANNABIS...except in Arizona. Recreational marijuana won in California, Massachusetts, and Nevada; medical marijuana won in Florida, Arkansas (first states in the Old South to take that step), and North Dakota. There's no turning back this tide. JC

2 YEARS!! DELTA VERDE LABORATORY is celebrating its second birthday this month. The time has flown by. We've met lots of great people, expanded our testing portfolio, passed third-party proficiency tests, networked with other labs & cannabis chemists thru the ACCL and other organizations, and had fun along the way. Now we're on the verge of seeing full legalization of cannabis in Arizona. It's a great time to be in this business, and we want to thank all of our clients: patients, cultivators, extractors, manufacturers, and dispensary owners. They are the people who truly care about ensuring the quality of their products. THANK YOU!

The ACCL (Association of Commercial Cannabis Laboratories) has released the preliminary results of the latest Inter-Laboratory Comparison/Proficiency Test for cannabinoids and residual solvents. Delta Verde Laboratory is pleased to announced that we passed! We'll give out more details after the official results are published. The bottom line is, this is an independent, 3rd-party verification of our competency in testing your product.

A Few Random Observations on MJ in Costa Rica
1. Marijuana is pretty easy to get, not suprisingly. We were approached on the beach by Ticos (CR natives) offering to provide us with beach chairs, food, beer...and marijuana.
2. Smoking paraphernalia is sold in many gift shops and cigar shops, and even in little bodegas. They are usually small pipes made of wood, glass, or ceramic. Rolling papers and sometimes grinders are sold there also.
3. I have family in CR, and they have many Tico friends there, one on whom offered us some of his homegrown herb (see picture below). They call it "crippi" (from Kryptonite?). We smoked it from one of those little metal one-hit tubes. While we enjoyed the experience very much, the local weed seems awfully mild compared to the potent stuff we get now in the US.
4. I never did see one of those giant tropical spliffs that I was told about - the kind that are wrapped up in long leaves and tied up with a bit of string. Oh well, maybe on our next trip.

I just got back from a 10-day vacation in Costa Rica, my first vacation in almost two years - I deserved it! Costa Rica is fantastic, and while there I made some notes on the local marijuana culture. Marijuana is still illegal in CR, technically. Possession and cultivation of small amounts have been decriminalized, but "small" has been left undefined. At any rate, unless you're muling major amounts or being flagrant about smoking in public, the authorities don't seem to care much. A medical marijuana bill is now working its way thru the Costa Rican legislature.

So far, we seem to have dodged the bullet. Our page is still running smoothly. Dispensaries with pages are having them shut down, which is weird and stupid, IMHO. Cannabis testing labs haven't been hit - yet.

FAQ: "Why doesn't Delta Verde Lab use a mass spec for testing residual solvents & terpenes?"
One word: overkill.
A mass spectrometer (mass spec, or just MS) is an instrument that can be used, either alone or more commonly with a GC or LC, to measure many substances. As the name implies, it measures based on the mass of a molecule or fragments of a molecule. (More correctly, it's the mass-to-charge ratio.) A mass spec is very sensitive, and very expensive.
So is the extra sensitivity and extra expense worthwhile to the customer? Residual solvents and terpenes are relatively small molecules. Many have identical molecular masses ("isomers") and similar molecular fragments, so a mass spectrum gives little or no useful information to the chemist. Although Arizona doesn't currently regulate residual solvents in cannabis concentrates, states that do regulate have allowable levels ranging from 10 to 500 parts per million (ppm). There is no need looking for parts per billion, especially considering that substances such as butane are classed as "Generally Recognized as Safe", or GRAS.
A mass spec is a wonderful tool for looking at very low levels of things such as pesticides, where parts per billion can be critical. But for residual solvents and terpenes, a mass spec is an unnecessary expense that would have to be passed on to the customer. At DVL, we're keepin' it real.

Just got back from the Emerald Conference in Las Vegas, and boy, are my arms tired! But seriously, folks...it was two days of meeting and learning and networking with other members of the scientific cannabis community. Testing lab chemists, researchers, equipment manufacturers, extractors, etc. Hell, there was even a lawyer or two to update us on the latest political developments. And the social events Thursday & Friday evenings were a lot of fun too.

COMPETITION IS GOOD!
The cannabis testing business, like most businesses, is intensely competitive - and that's good for the consumer. A free market economy can't function without competition. Competition keeps quality high and prices fair. At Delta Verde Laboratory, competition doesn't mean we try to tear down or trash talk our competitors. Competition means we strive constantly to improve our own services, providing reliable data, at fair prices, with quick turnaround times, and the best technical support. We know you have a choice, so we thank all of you who have chosen Delta Verde to be your cannabis testing lab.
