Dr. David Marquis, DC DACBN

Dr. David Marquis, DC DACBN Dr. Marquis is a Functional Medicine doctor who goes beyond symptom management medicine.

How many people do you know that think they have some form of "ADD or Aspergers", or just get "Foggy in the Brain" and are forgetful of names and places or those who stumble or trip a lot. These are all subtle signs of a Brain Imbalance that affect health in ways that will totally surprise you. Patients who have unrecognized neurological symptoms due to an imbalance between their left and right br

ain hemispheres need help and medication isn't always the solution. Drugs treat the hemispheres equally, where as Brain Based Therapy can treat a specific area in the brain; effectively helping the patient recover from symptoms and conditions caused when the brain is imbalanced. These unique therapies when combined with proper fuel delivery (metabolism) allow patients to succeed in overcoming their blocks to optimal health. After a complete evaluation which often includes full labs and physical exam along with history to determine the actual cause of complaints Dr. Marquis will implement an equally comprehensive treatment plan. He will leave no stone unturned to assist his patients in their recovery.

Fiber! We need it for a happy gut and healthy bowel movements. But what is it and why do we need it? Fiber is a special carbohydrate that does not break down in the digestive system and helps the body properly excrete waste. There are 2 types of fiber that act differently yet are both necessary for proper bowel function.
• Insoluble Fiber - Speeds up digestion as it holds onto water and adds bulk to your stool. This fiber is extremely helpful when experiencing constipation. Examples include whole wheat, brown rice, nuts, seeds, cauliflower, dark leafy greens, and peppers.
• Soluble Fiber - Slows down digestion by attracting more water and turns into a gel-like substance. This fiber manages constipation and diarrhea. Examples include oats, apples, citrus fruit, carrots, legumes, sweet potatoes, and brussel sprouts.

If you want to try adding in more fiber throughout your diet, it is best to make a functional medicine appointment. That way, you will have holistic and detailed exams that may help narrow down the best approach for you!

Mold spores can act as irritants, prompting the body to initiate an immune response that may lead to widespread inflammation. When inflammation occurs in the brain, it can impair cognitive function, and chronic inflammation may result in lasting cognitive issues.

Mold often goes unnoticed, lurking in homes, offices, cars, washing machines, and bathrooms. It can silently undermine our immune system and contribute to systemic problems.

Symptoms of Mold Exposure:
• Respiratory Issues (coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion)
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Mood Changes (anxiety, depression)
• Cognitive Difficulties (memory problems, confusion)
• Skin Irritation
• Gut-Related Disorders
• Muscle Aches and Pains

If you suspect you’ve been exposed to mold, it’s important to detoxify your body with the help of functional medicine.

Chronic fatigue can significantly impact daily life, leaving individuals feeling drained and unmotivated. EEG and neurofeedback offer innovative solutions by monitoring brainwave activity to identify patterns linked to fatigue.

Through neurofeedback, individuals can train their brains to function more efficiently, potentially alleviating fatigue symptoms and boosting energy levels. This non-invasive approach empowers people to manage their condition proactively.

As we enjoy the great outdoors—whether hiking, camping, or spending time in the garden—it's important to be mindful of Lyme disease, which is transmitted through tick bites. Here are some effective strategies to help prevent Lyme disease while you explore nature:

Prevention Tips:
1. Dress Appropriately:
o Wear long sleeves and pants and tuck your pants into your socks to minimize skin exposure.
o Choose light-colored clothing to make it easier to spot ticks.
2. Stay on Trails:
o Stick to well-maintained paths and avoid tall grass and dense brush where ticks are more likely to hide.
3. Perform Tick Checks:
o After spending time outdoors, conduct thorough tick checks on yourself, your children, and pets. Remove any ticks promptly and properly.
4. Shower After Outdoor Activities:
o Showering within two hours of being outdoors can help wash away ticks and make it easier to spot any that may have attached.
5. Landscape Wisely:
o Keep your yard well-maintained by mowing the lawn regularly and creating barriers between wooded areas and your outdoor spaces.

How Functional Medicine Can Help

Inflammation is a crucial process in the body, but it can become excessive when triggered by unhealthy lifestyles, stress, and toxic exposures. Acute inflammation presents clear symptoms like redness, pain, and swelling. In contrast, chronic inflammation can be harder to detect, often lingering for years without a clear cause. Common signs of chronic inflammation include mood changes, persistent pain, and fatigue.

Through Functional Medicine, we can assess your symptoms and history to create a tailored plan just for you.

Gout is a painful form of arthritis caused by uric acid crystal buildup in the joints. It can be influenced by diet, lifestyle, and other health factors. Some key causes include:
• High Uric Acid Levels: Resulting from purine breakdown.
• Diet: Foods high in purines (e.g., red meat, shellfish, sugary drinks) can trigger attacks.
• Obesity: Increases uric acid production.
• Dehydration: Reduces the body’s ability to excrete uric acid.

Tips to Manage and Prevent Gout:
1. Adjust Your Diet:
o Limit purine-rich foods (red meat, shellfish).
o Increase fruits and vegetables.
o Include cherries and vitamin C-rich foods.
2. Stay Hydrated:
o Drink plenty of water to help flush out uric acid.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
o Aim for a balanced diet and regular exercise.
4. Support Gut Health:
o Incorporate probiotics and fiber-rich foods.
5. Manage Stress:

o Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to reduce inflammation.
