Beyond PT with Kayla

Beyond PT with Kayla I’m passionate about helping older adults stay strong, steady, and independent in the comfort of their own homes. I’m honored to be part of your journey!

My mission is to provide compassionate, personalized in-home maintenance and wellness care that helps adults stay strong, safe, and independent—while giving families confidence and peace of mind long after traditional therapy ends. Hi, I’m Kayla Fluder, DPT, CAPS, a licensed physical therapist and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). After years of working in assisted living, personal care, independent living, outpatient clinics, and home-based therapy across the Pittsburgh area, I noticed a major gap in care: many people finish traditional therapy but still need ongoing support to maintain function and prevent decline. That’s why I created Beyond PT with Kayla—a mobile, private-pay service providing in-home maintenance sessions, mobility support, strength and balance training, and personalized wellness programs tailored to each person’s needs. As a CAPS professional, I also perform home safety and aging-in-place assessments to help clients and families make thoughtful modifications that support safety, independence, and daily confidence. My focus is simple:
To provide consistent, compassionate support that helps adults age safely at home—while giving families peace of mind.

My first voiceover reel so be kind! 🎙️ And somehow 60 minutes of work became 44 seconds.

A little behind-the-scenes look at what an in-home session can look like. This day called for a lot of stretching, core strengthening and me apparently getting my own workout in along the way.

Big thanks to my client for letting me film and share a little piece of our time together. Not everyone wants a camera involved (understandably!), so I’m always grateful when someone is willing to let you see what Beyond PT looks like in real life.

I’m incredibly grateful when someone trusts me with the care of a person they love. And even more grateful when they take the time to put it into words like this. 🤍

As a clinician, building rapport often comes naturally when someone is recovering from an illness, injury, or setback. But inviting me into your home after therapy has ended—and trusting me to help you keep moving forward—takes a different kind of leap of faith and commitment.

That trust is never lost on me, and I’ll never take it for granted.

This one means a lot.

Happy World PT Day! 🤍

Physical therapy is one of the more familiar types of therapy in our healthcare system—but that doesn’t always make it everyone’s first choice. 😉 Pushing our limits and working through some discomfort isn’t always pleasant, but it can be well worth it.

If something is limiting your movement, strength, balance, or independence—go see a PT. We’re pretty great at what we do!

And when therapy ends but you’re not ready to stop? That’s where Beyond PT comes in. 💪

This one made me pause.

I had some tough conversations this week. We talked about change, processing, frustration, acceptance, and mental health. Some conversations I tiptoed into. Others went deeper than I expected. What I do each week often brings on some opening up from my clients and patients which I take as a wonderful compliment that people feel comfortable sharing about their life and struggles with me.

I know this is primarily a movement and exercise page, but you may see me stray from that a little more this month.

I feel deeply about the mind being given the same space to heal as the body. We can work on strength, balance, endurance and mobility—but there is a whole person attached to the body we’re asking to keep moving. Avoiding difficult conversations and ignoring the changes/feelings we experience won’t make them disappear unfortunately.

Sometimes moving forward has very little to do with exercise—and that is OKAY.

I read this page this morning and just felt like sharing it. Maybe someone else needs it today, too. ✨

September is Su***de Prevention Month. 💚

I’m pretty candid with my clients about the fact that I regularly talk with someone for my own mental health. It works for me. It may not be for everyone.

But I do believe in being honest with someone in your life when you’re struggling.

A therapist. A friend. A spouse. A family member. Your doctor. Someone you trust.

You don’t have to have the right words or have it all figured out. Sometimes it starts with simply letting another person know you’re not doing okay.

Mental health matters at every age. Check in on your people—and be honest with yours, too. 💚

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

A little Dolly tribute to honor the legend. She certainly gave different meaning to the word thriving as we age! ⠀
⠀
I had a really enjoyable day with some new clients, topped off by the sweetest notes from their families. ⠀
⠀
I’ll forever be humbled to have people refer me and welcome me into their life. It truly is an honor to be trusted in maintaining their mobility and independence. And the best part? It makes my life better, too. 💚⠀

💊 Medication management isn’t exactly the most glamorous topic… but it might be one of the most important.

As a physical therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how missed doses, accidental double-dosing, or medication side effects can quietly impact someone’s balance, cognition, energy, and independence.

The good news? There are so many practical tools available today that can make medication routines safer and less overwhelming—for both older adults and the people who love them.

This month’s Sentry Aging blog shares some of our favorite medication management resources, from pharmacy packaging to smart reminders and simple organization tips.

I hope it gives you a few ideas that make life just a little easier.

The last 2½ weeks have been full—in the best way.

Between Sentry Aging and Beyond PT with Kayla, I’ve had the opportunity to attend 9 networking events and 1-on-1 meetings with people all around the city.

Honestly, every one of them has left me feeling energized.

One of my favorite parts is that there never seems to be a sense of competition in the room. Every conversation feels collaborative, and I know when I walk away I’ll most likely have someone new in our corner—and hopefully they’ll feel the same.

These conversations have been with business owners, former hospital administrators, professionals from senior living communities, community organizations, and so many others who all bring something different to the table. Finding space in each other’s worlds is what ultimately creates a better experience for the people we serve.

I’ve never believed my job is just giving someone 3 sets of 10 reps. I believe it’s helping people find the right answer, the right resource, or the right person—even when that person isn’t me.

Today’s event (picture 1) focused on scam prevention for older adults with a Senior Justice Advocate from the Allegheny County DA’s Office—a topic that deserves its own post because there was so much valuable information to share. Stay tuned!

And because we love celebrating people...

🎉 This weekend, my grandfather turns 85! Swipe to the second photo and it’s pretty easy to see why I ended up working with the 65+ population.

🎂 Dina’s daughter, Rosalee, is also celebrating a very special 5th birthday this weekend.

Rosalee isn’t pictured because... well... the internet can be a weird place. 😊

Here’s to building relationships, sharing knowledge, and remembering that we can accomplish so much more when we work together💫
