Elkton, Md.—Oct. 17 As Boyd Martin and On Cue made their way around Ken Krome’s show jumping course today, it didn't sound like they were likely to win the inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill. The 15-year-old Anglo European mare (Cabr...

Deepest condolences to our friends Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center who are mourning the loss of sweet Pippin.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our friend, Pippin. Pippin, or Pop’s Top Deck, was a well-loved member of our herd for 7 years. He came to us through volunteer, Lyv Guimond who connected us with his owners Mo Bornholdt and Vanessa Setaka.

Mo and Vanessa had owned Pippin since he was a yearling. A Foundation Quarter Horse, originally born in Ohio, he was purchased at an auction, and came to Virginia as a long-term investment for Mo’s retirement - and a project for Vanessa when she was an early teen. Together with their trainer, Mo and Vanessa put miles and experience on Pippin - showing him in the Quarter Horse circuit and hunter-jumper shows. He was always game to teach the “flashy one’s” what a true QH was all about - character, sturdiness and consistency - and an occasional opinion about the world. He stepped up to any task - trail riding, western, hunters and cross country. He loved to keep his people in check by sneaking out of the field and visiting the neighbors, and by stopping on trails to blow bubbles in the nearby creek.

Pippin accompanied Vanessa to college at Penn State and as she moved into the professional world, he came to Sprout to share his education with others. He quickly assimilated into our herd and always found a way to get along with anyone (even horses with the most challenging temperaments). His sturdy build, easy-going way, and slow western jog were loved by all.

But, what we especially enjoyed, was seeing him “pick” HIS people.

It’s true - Pippin tolerated everyone...but he didn’t like EVERYONE. And he let us know it. It wasn’t based on age, or body type, or attitude or even talent. To be honest, we don’t know what he based his choices on...but it was clear - he either accepted you as HIS or not.

If he didn’t like you - you’d know it pretty quickly…
And IF he did - he loved you UNCONDITIONALLY.

He supported kids who were having sensory meltdowns and quieted their nerves (allowing purposeful language to evolve from screams). He played games and got dressed up for the holidays (even though he would have rather sat in the corner eating cookies). He carried an independent rider through a seizure and slowed down to support her - using incredible discernment to "whoa" when her body was saying “go.” He helped our barn cowboy become a true horseman. He reinvigorated the mind of a woman struggling with dementia - allowing her to ride freely - something she remembered so well still! And he carried a fine gentleman for his weekly ride - an escape from assisted living.

And he taught us…
To be ready to hear our horses' choices.
And to listen to their opinions.
To give them a voice.
And to trust what they say.

He taught us that “you have to tolerate, but you don’t have to like everyone.”
And that’s ok.
He also taught us “that it's impossible for everyone to like you.”
And that’s ok.

ALL we have to be is... ourselves.
And naturally, we’ll find OUR PEOPLE.
And when we do, we should LOVE them with our WHOLE hearts.
That we should show it unconditionally.

So thank you Pippin for the lessons.
For teaching us to listen.
For choosing us in return.
And for loving us with every step.

We’ll miss you buddy.

Wheatland Farm’s Rocking Allen rocked around the Great Meadow Horse Trials today with Anthony Forrest, narrowly missing the second spot with one rail in the show jumping phase. With impressive dressage scores and coming in well under the time cross country, this talented ex-timber horse, fabulous para dressage horse, now turned Eventer is one to watch! #retiredracer #rockingallen #usparadressage #anthonyforrest

Well now we understand!!! ❤️❤️

"Recent studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional "healing" that happens when we are near horses. According to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher level of intelligence than the brain: A magnetometer can measure the heart's energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. While this is certainly significant it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse's heart is five times larger than the human one (imagine a sphere-shaped field that completely surrounds you). The horse's electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm!
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent" heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may "feel better" when we are around them. . . .studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy--that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. Often times, we only need to be in a horses presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain surppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy."
