Sincerely your favorite ā€œcrunchyā€-ish PA-C šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€āš•ļø

I’m a Family Medicine PA, and I’m not worried about your one Diet Coke a day. 🄤

And here’s some science to back that up!

🧪 The European Food Safety Authority considers aspartame safe within an acceptable daily intake of 40 mg per kilogram of body weight.

For a 154-pound adult, that could mean drinking approximately 9–14 cans of diet soda EVERY DAY just to exceed that limit, depending on the amount of aspartame in each can.

And exceeding that limit doesn’t automatically mean harm—it’s a conservative safety guideline, not a toxicity threshold.

Is Diet Coke a health drink? No. Can its acidity affect your teeth? Absolutely.

But one Diet Coke isn’t going to undo an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

Can we please stop making people feel guilty about every little thing they consume?

Your overall habits matter WAY more than one drink. šŸ¤

I really hate to say this….

If you’re in healthcare, I need you to weigh in.

10/14/2026

Which šŸ’‰ will I pick?

As a Family Medicine PA-C, I prescribe both, but when weight loss is the primary goal, I tend to lean toward tirzepatide. Here’s why! šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

šŸ’‰ Semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic) targets ONE hormone pathway: GLP-1.

šŸ’‰ Tirzepatide (Zepbound/Mounjaro) targets TWO: GLP-1 + GIP.

Both help regulate appetite and increase feelings of fullness, but here’s where things get interesting…

šŸ“Š In a head-to-head study, average weight loss after 72 weeks was:

• Semaglutide: 13.7%
• Tirzepatide: 20.2%

That’s a pretty significant difference!

BUT that doesn’t mean tirzepatide is best for everyone.

Medical history, side effects, INSURANCE COVERAGE, and other health conditions all play a role in which medication I recommend.

My takeaway? Both are excellent tools for treating obesity, but when weight loss is the main priority, tirzepatide is often my first choice.

šŸ¤ SAVE this for later and tell me—have you tried either one? What was your experience?

Results are study averages, not guaranteed individual outcomes. Medication decisions should be individualized with your healthcare provider.

Fatigue and constipation… would you have suspected THIS diagnosis? šŸ‘€

Sometimes the biggest clues come from routine bloodwork!

Hyperparathyroidism is something many people have never heard of, but it can cause fatigue, brain fog, constipation, kidney stones, and even bone loss.

🩸 One important clue? Elevated calcium.

If your calcium has been high on bloodwork, don’t ignore it! It may be worth checking your parathyroid hormone (PTH) level.

And remember, this doesn’t just happen to older women!

Taylor | Money, Motherhood, Simple living is the rockstar working mom who dropped this nugget on her page a year ago and I’ve been doing it ever since.

It’s tiny tweaks like this that I love learning. Small habits that other moms are doing to make the balance just a little easier.

Isn’t that what social media was intended for in the first place? Connection and learning from one another.

What’s a ā€œsmall habitā€ that actually has a big return for you?

New finds that have earned a permanent spot in my pantry!

Swanson Broth is now a part of my Walmart grocery delivery weekly! Adding it into just about anything to amp up flavor and protein.

I’ve also been on the hunt for a protein powder that is delicious on its own but also actually mixes well into coffee, overnight oats, baked goods and Ballerina Farm Store has checked every box!!

And why didn’t yall tell me about instant espresso?? You know I LOVE coffee.

Which one are you excited to try?

Mammograms expose you to radiation. So why am I STILL recommending them? šŸ‘€

Look, I consider myself to be on the crunchier side of traditional medicine- I pay attention to ingredients, try to minimize unnecessary exposures, and believe in asking questions about our health.

But I’m also a Family Medicine PA, and some of the anti-mammogram advice circulating right now genuinely concerns me.

Because here’s the thing… the crunchy community isn’t wrong about EVERYTHING. But they’re leaving out some important information. šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

ā˜¢ļø 1. Mammograms DO expose you to radiation.

But the amount is VERY small—approximately 0.4 mSv, or about 7 weeks of natural background radiation. The potential risk is extremely low, and the benefits of recommended screening outweigh that risk.

🚫 2. Mammograms do NOT cause cancer to spread.

The claim that breast compression during a mammogram can rupture tumors and spread cancer cells is NOT supported by credible scientific evidence.

šŸ”¬ 3. Mammograms aren’t perfect.

False positives, unnecessary biopsies, and overdiagnosis are legitimate concerns. Dense breast tissue can also make cancers harder to detect.

But imperfect doesn’t mean ineffective!

🌿 4. Ultrasound and thermography are NOT equivalent replacements.

Yes, they avoid radiation. But that doesn’t automatically make them better. Ultrasound can be helpful in certain situations, while thermography has NOT been proven effective as a replacement for mammograms.

šŸ’• 5. Early detection matters.

Mammograms can detect breast cancer before you feel a lump, and screening has been shown to reduce breast cancer deaths.

Here’s where I stand:

I believe in reducing unnecessary exposures AND practicing evidence-based medicine. Those things don’t have to contradict each other. šŸ¤

For average-risk women, screening generally begins at 40, although recommendations vary on frequency. Your individual risk may change when and how you should be screened.

šŸ’— SAVE this and SHARE it with a woman who needs to hear both sides of the conversation!

I get asked this question A LOT! And my answer is always the same.

I CHOOSE to become a Physician Assistant (now recognized as a Physician Associate).

It was not a backup plan.

And I’d choose it all over again.

Celebrating our profession (started in 1965!) and all of the wonderful 201,000 PAs caring for patients all across the US!

And feeling extra thankful for an office that showered me with gifts and pizza šŸ•šŸ• today ā¤ļø

I’d love to know if you’re a PA, what speciality do you practice in?
If you’ve been cared for by a PA, tell us your experience!
If you’re an aspiring PA, let us help cheer you on!

šŸ”„ How to identify them and what to do šŸ‘‡šŸ”„

Parents—save this one, especially if you live in the South.

Fire ants are aggressive little ants that can swarm quickly and sting multiple times when their mound is disturbed.

How to identify them:
• About 1/8–1/4 inch long
• Reddish-brown to dark in color
• Often different sizes within the same colony
• Build mound-shaped nests, often in lawns, parks, fields, and other sunny areas
• Become very aggressive when the mound is disturbed (APHIS)

If your child steps in a mound:
• Get them away from the mound immediately
• Quickly brush the ants off — they can stay attached and continue stinging
• Wash the area with soap and water
• Use a cold compress for pain and swelling
• An antihistamine may help with itching when appropriate for your child (CDC)

A fire ant sting usually causes immediate burning/pain, redness and itching, and a small white fluid-filled pustule can develop over the next day or two. (CDC)

🚨 Call 911 for signs of a serious allergic reaction, including trouble breathing, significant face/throat swelling, fainting or other rapidly worsening symptoms.

Where are fire ants most common?
They’re primarily found throughout the southern United States, especially Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and portions of Arkansas, California, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. They’re also established in Puerto Rico. (APHIS)
