Practical advice for our picky eaters! Exposure is everything! 😋 🥄 👍🏻

My Big Scoop, Small Sample strategy at family mealtimes is a GAME CHANGER ! You’ve heard me say it before, EXPOSURE IS EVERYTHING. Start by making sure that a teaspoon 🥄 of any food served family style ends up on the plate. Put a serving spoon (“big scoop”) and a teaspoon on each platter and ask “Would you like a big scoop or small sample?” Worried your child will just say “NO”? Here are more tips for you:

✔️Say “Big scoop or small sample” and then be quiet. Be still. Just wait. Don’t even look at your kid, look at the spoons, expecting an answer. (Not from the spoons, but from your child. LOL!) 😉 GIVE YOUR CHILD TIME TO SAY “small sample”.

✔️When kids respond with “NO!” say “Sweetheart, in our house, the rule is we always take a bit of everything. (Hint: Notice I didn’t say “a bite” of everything.) Would you like a big scoop or a small sample?”

✔️Still no luck? Then the response is “I’m sorry that you chose to break a family rule. We will talk about it later.” Then move on. Don’t give it attention at mealtimes. ✔️If you have rules in your family, what are the consequences for breaking them? Treat any family rule like “We always make our bed” or perhaps “We always feed the dog” the same. “We always put a bit of everything on our plate” is a reasonable, no-pressure rule. Likewise, a reasonable, meaningful consequence for not following family rules is totally ok! Remember, nobody is getting in trouble for not eating. We just have a rule in this family that we always put a bit of what’s being served on our plates. It’s polite. 😊

It's about EXPOSURE. Kids are capable of having food on their plate. #forsure

If kids can’t tolerate the aroma or sight of new food, direct one-on-one feeding therapy is essential to learning to become an adventurous eater. It all starts with food on the plate. It all starts with exposure.

What an amazing gift Kodi has! Growing up with Autism and Blindness, he was drawn to music. Such a talent and can’t wait to watch him this season on AGT- Go Kodi! 👏🏻🎉

This child of God is a prodigy. Autism and blindness can’t erase the smile from the face of Kodie Lee! Kodi has just given HOPE, POWER, and HAPPINESS to those who feel marginalized because of who they are. Erase the DIS, and highlight the ABILITY! Here's a Friday story to warm your heart! We love that there are good people out there. Check out this story about public safety officer, Sgt. Keith Miller, who was responding to an incident that involved an adult man on the autism spectrum who was in distress and unable to communicate his needs. Instead of choosing the many ways this could have been handled, Miller chose creativity and compassion. And it worked. ❤️️

"As parents, we're there to help them deal with their obstacles," said Miller, who has a son who is on the autism spectrum. "And if we can't do it by ourselves, there's other people out there to help. And I want to be one of those other people."
