A desire to help others is what led Chris Jones to become a hearing specialist. "I love my job — it’s very gratifying when people tell you they hear so much better after getting properly fitted with a hearing system," he says.

Chris left a career in the custom home construction business to pursue a more personally rewarding career in healthcare. After fulfilling the requisite education credentials, Chris completed hands-on training with audiologists in the field and became a licensed hearing specialist in 2008.

Mabel H. began noticing her hearing loss about five years ago, and so did her children. “My daughter started nagging me about getting my hearing tested,” she said. “One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for Zounds in Kennesaw. I told my husband, ‘Let’s go.’”

At Zounds, Mabel’s hearing was evaluated by hearing specialist Chris Jones, who then gave her a thorough explanation of all the different products and available options. Mabel was fitted for a new hearing system the same day.

The consequences of hearing loss can be much more serious than simply struggling to hear conversations or turning up the volume on the television. For example, older adults with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing, according to a 2011 study conducted by Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging. Even after taking into account other risk factors associated with dementia — including diabetes, high blood pressure, age, s*x and race — the research showed a strong correlation between auditory deprivation and a loss of cognitive function. The study concluded that auditory stimulation is critical in maintaining healthy brain function.

Did you know there are steps you can take to prevent hearing loss? One easy step is to always be aware of potentially noisy environments, such as concerts, working with power tools or operating heavy machinery or loud vehicles. It may be wise to consider avoiding these situations outright or at least take the right precautions. You should always be prepared to use some form of ear protection like earplugs or earmuffs. Be proactive in controlling your environment as much as possible, such as lowering the volume while listening to music on your car radio.

Remember, once noise damaged has occurred, it is irreversible.

Jerome S. had experienced a gradual hearing loss. Eventually, he began to worry about all that he might be missing because he couldn’t hear. “I worried about driving and not hearing another car or emergency vehicle approaching,” he said. “And I realized that I couldn’t really converse with my wife.”

Although Jerome was skeptical about hearing aids, he decided to stop by Zounds for a hearing exam. He ended up leaving with a hearing system the same day.

Now, Jerome says he doesn’t worry about missing out on what he needs to hear and he’s enjoying more activities, like listening to music. And his wife, Joanne, says the difference in his hearing is remarkable.

Newlyweds Ken and Joan W. (pictured here with Zounds hearing specialist Chris Jones, left) say that Ken’s Zounds hearing system has improved his quality of life in many ways. Ken, who previously wore hearing aids purchased from a big-box retailer and found the sound quality and customer service lacking, says his experience with Zounds has been completely different.

“It’s been very good,” he said. “I receive better care at Zounds and can get help from Chris whenever I need it.”
