A desire to help others is what led Chris Jones to become a hearing specialist. "I love my job — it’s very gratifying when people tell you they hear so much better after getting properly fitted with a hearing system," he says.

Chris left a career in the custom home construction business to pursue a more personally rewarding career in healthcare. After fulfilling the requisite education credentials, Chris completed hands-on training with audiologists in the field and became a licensed hearing specialist in 2008.

When visiting Zounds, customers can expect to receive a thorough, professional hearing evaluation from one of our hearing specialists like Chris, along with a complete explanation of the test results and recommended products for their hearing loss.

People with hearing loss often feel isolated from loved ones, friends and co-workers. This feeling of isolation can lead to avoidance of social interactions, as well as depression, anxiety or paranoia. Do any of the following statements describe you or a loved one?

• I feel annoyed when people are hard to understand.

• I feel overwhelmed by large, noisy gatherings of family, friends or co-workers.

• I would rather stay home alone than be with others in a noisy setting.

• I have trouble connecting with family members, especially children, because I cannot understand them.

• I am fearful of new social situations.

If you identify with any of the above statements, you may have a hearing loss.

At Zounds, we truly understand the impact hearing loss has on quality of life and overall well-being. Our rechargeable products offer unmatched sound quality and clarity, and each Zounds hearing aid is specifically programmed to match the customer’s own unique hearing loss. Mabel H. began noticing her hearing loss about five years ago, and so did her children. “My daughter started nagging me about getting my hearing tested,” she said. “One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for Zounds in Kennesaw. I told my husband, ‘Let’s go.’”

At Zounds, Mabel’s hearing was evaluated by hearing specialist Chris Jones, who then gave her a thorough explanation of all the different products and available options. Mabel was fitted for a new hearing system the same day.

The 81-year-old says her Zounds hearing aids have made a big difference in her life and is especially grateful to be able to hear the sermon and participate in services at her church.

“I couldn’t ask for a better experience,” says Mabel about her new Zounds hearing aids.

The consequences of hearing loss can be much more serious than simply struggling to hear conversations or turning up the volume on the television. For example, older adults with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing, according to a 2011 study conducted by Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging. Even after taking into account other risk factors associated with dementia — including diabetes, high blood pressure, age, s*x and race — the research showed a strong correlation between auditory deprivation and a loss of cognitive function. The study concluded that auditory stimulation is critical in maintaining healthy brain function.

If you are concerned that you or a loved one is experiencing hearing loss, call today to schedule a free hearing exam at Zounds: (678) 809-7464.

Did you know there are steps you can take to prevent hearing loss? One easy step is to always be aware of potentially noisy environments, such as concerts, working with power tools or operating heavy machinery or loud vehicles. It may be wise to consider avoiding these situations outright or at least take the right precautions. You should always be prepared to use some form of ear protection like earplugs or earmuffs. Be proactive in controlling your environment as much as possible, such as lowering the volume while listening to music on your car radio.

Remember, once noise damaged has occurred, it is irreversible.

Considering getting your hearing tested? When you come to Zounds for a hearing exam, you can expect to receive a compassionate and thorough hearing evaluation from one of our licensed hearing specialists like Dan Kirk (pictured here in our Roswell office).

Dan says it was his own father’s hearing loss that prompted an interest in the field of audiology and a desire to do something rewarding that led to a career change. "Being able to hear is an important key to staying active in life — it’s gratifying to be able to help people improve their quality of life with better hearing," he says.

Hearing exams are always free at Zounds. Call today to schedule yours: (678) 809-7464.

Our hearing is integral to keeping us connected with the world around us, and to those we love. Untreated hearing loss can affect your ability to understand speech and can negatively impact your social, emotional and physical well-being. So, what causes us to lose our ability to hear?

There are a number of potential causes of hearing loss, including:
• Exposure to excessive loud noise over a period of time.
• Ear infections, trauma, or ear disease.
• Harm of the inner ear and ear drum from contact with a foreign
object (such as cotton swabs).
• Illness or certain medications that may be ototoxic.
• Deteriorating hearing due to the normal aging process.

By far, the most common cause of hearing loss is exposure to excessive noise over time. We live in a noisy world, and sometimes, our employment or recreational choices can impact our hearing. Even personal listening devices and cell phone use can impact our hearing. This exposure causes irreversible damage to the hair cells within the cochlea.

At Zounds, we truly understand the impact hearing loss has on quality of life and overall wellbeing. Our product line features groundbreaking technology in the areas of noise reduction, feedback cancellation and improved speech intelligability. And hearing exams are always free at Zounds: call today to schedule an appointment.

Jerome S. had experienced a gradual hearing loss. Eventually, he began to worry about all that he might be missing because he couldn’t hear. “I worried about driving and not hearing another car or emergency vehicle approaching,” he said. “And I realized that I couldn’t really converse with my wife.”

Although Jerome was skeptical about hearing aids, he decided to stop by Zounds for a hearing exam. He ended up leaving with a hearing system the same day.

Now, Jerome says he doesn’t worry about missing out on what he needs to hear and he’s enjoying more activities, like listening to music. And his wife, Joanne, says the difference in his hearing is remarkable.

“The hearing system has been a godsend,” said Jerome. “And it eliminated the ‘huh?’ and ‘what?’ from my conversations!”

Do you suspect you have a hearing loss? Here are some situations that occur during social interactions that may indicate hearing loss:

1. I have difficulty hearing people talk in noisy environments such as a restaurant, shopping mall, in a car, or at the movie theater.

2. People seem to “mumble” all the time.

3. Family, friends, or colleagues often have to repeat themselves when speaking with me.

4. I have trouble hearing people when they are not facing me or are in another room.

5. I have trouble following conversations.

Do any of these statements describe you or a loved one? Call today to schedule a free hearing exam: (678) 809-7464.

Newlyweds Ken and Joan W. (pictured here with Zounds hearing specialist Chris Jones, left) say that Ken’s Zounds hearing system has improved his quality of life in many ways. Ken, who previously wore hearing aids purchased from a big-box retailer and found the sound quality and customer service lacking, says his experience with Zounds has been completely different.

“It’s been very good,” he said. “I receive better care at Zounds and can get help from Chris whenever I need it.”

The Zounds system also allowed Ken to hear some very important words…when he proposed to Joan. “I got my hearing aids,” he said. “And I heard her say ‘yes!’”
