Families often feel embarrassed admitting their dog eats p**p, but it’s really quite common and can be a normal behavior in dogs. Tulyp has enjoyed the occasional snack of Sulcata tortoise droppings and cat p**p so I don’t judge 😅.

Punishment makes it worse without exception. A dog told off for eating stool learns to do it faster and further away from you, and some start eating it the moment it lands to get rid of the evidence. Nothing about the underlying reason changes.

The unglamorous fixes work. Pick the yard up daily so there's nothing left to find, and near fields where livestock have been, keep the lead on. A covered litter box or a gate with a cat-sized opening takes the tray out of a dog's reach.

Then sort the digestion out underneath. A dog absorbing what they eat has no reason to go looking for a second helping, and the habit fades on its own once the gut is doing its job.

If your dog is eating p**p (coprophagia), it may be a sign of an imbalance in the gut microbiome, although behavioral and medical causes should also be considered. In appropriate cases, a f***l microbiota transplant (FMT), along with integrative therapies such as ozone, may help support a healthier gut environment and restore microbial balance. If coprophagia is persistent, it's important to have your veterinarian evaluate your dog to determine the underlying cause.

DM us if your dog does this daily and you'd like a plan for the gut side of it. 🐾💙

I ask every new family what they've already tried, and the answer comes back as a list of proteins. Salmon, then duck, then venison, then a prescription bag, each one given eight weeks.

The dog picks up a little on one of them and everybody gets hopeful, and then he goes back to chewing his feet in front of the TV.

Seasons tell you plenty before any test result arrives. A dog who is worse every spring and comfortable by November has pollen involved somewhere. A dog itching the same in February as in August is pointing you elsewhere. Write down when his bad weeks fall, going back as far as you can remember, and bring it with you.

The hardest part for families is hearing we can't remove everything. Grass is outside the door and the seasons come round regardless. What we can do is bring the total down far enough for the system to cope with the rest, and the bowl is the piece sitting entirely in your hands.

Rebuilding the gut is where I spend most of my time with these dogs. It takes months and it works slowly, but the families who stay with it get a dog who can lie on the lawn in May without paying for it all week.

The work is done by vets using a microbiota package, and your own vet can order one if they're open to it. DM us and we'll point you to someone doing this near you. 🐾💙

If your dog gets into any of these, call your vet before you do anything else. Plenty of these cases need no treatment at all, but it depends on what went in and how long ago.

A minute on the phone tells you whether you're getting in the car.
Take a sample with you, or a photograph of the packaging. Treatment differs depending on the toxin, and guessing costs time nobody has.

Never make a dog vomit at home without being told to. Some substances do more damage coming back up, and a dog already shaking can inhale what comes out.

A dog treated for this comes home having had activated charcoal and fluids, and the gut takes a hit alongside everything else.

Loose stool and a dull coat carrying on for weeks after a poisoning episode mean the microbiome hasn't rebuilt on its own. Re**al ozone can help oxygenate the system and help with detoxification.

Send us a message if your dog has been through something like this and hasn't been right since and we can help you find an ozone vet near you. 🐾💙
