A secondary condition doesn’t necessarily have to come directly from your military service.

If a condition you’re already service connected for causes another disability, or makes an existing one worse, that condition may qualify for secondary service connection.

The important part is showing the medical connection between the two. Simply having both conditions isn’t enough.

Swipe through for a quick breakdown of how secondary conditions work in a VA disability claim.

PFAS exposure in the military wasn’t limited to firefighters or flight line personnel.

Firefighting foam used for decades on military installations could contaminate groundwater, potentially putting these chemicals into the water veterans drank, cooked with, and showered in.

That means exposure could extend well beyond the people who actually trained with or handled the foam.

What began as a mission to capture key members of Mohamed Farrah Aidid’s militia became nearly 18 hours of fighting and one of the fiercest battles American forces had faced since Vietnam.

By the time the fighting ended, 18 Americans had been killed and dozens more wounded. The battle left a lasting mark on the men who fought there and on the military community that followed.

For those at Xterra who later served in the 75th Ranger Regiment, Mogadishu is part of the history and legacy we inherited. The men in these photographs served in a different time, but their names, their actions, and the lessons of October 3rd and 4th, 1993, remained part of the Regiment long after they came home.

Thirty-three years later, we remember the men who fought that night, those who carried it home with them, and the 18 who never did.

Most veterans who come to Xterra already have a lot of their claim in place. What they’re missing is the medical evidence that connects the dots.

That’s the part we handle.

Nexus letters, DBQs, C&P exam prep and medical evidence roadmaps, all built around what’s actually in your file. And if you don’t need us, we’ll tell you that too.

A diagnosis alone doesn’t always explain how a condition is connected to your military service.

That’s where the nexus comes in. It’s the medical reasoning that connects what you’re dealing with today to what happened during service, or to another service-connected condition.

This carousel breaks down where a nexus fits into a VA disability claim and what a strong medical opinion should actually include.

A lot of VA claims get surprisingly close.

The diagnosis is there. The records are there. The history is there. What’s missing is often the medical evidence that actually connects those pieces.

That’s where a well-supported nexus letter can matter. It should be specific to your records, backed by medical literature, and address the actual issue in your claim or denial.

Pain matters in a VA disability claim, even when your range of motion looks normal.

If a service-connected joint is painful, the VA’s painful motion rule may support a minimum compensable rating, typically 10%.

A nexus letter can be an important piece of a VA disability claim, but that doesn’t mean every veteran needs one.

The first step is understanding what medical evidence your claim is actually missing. If a nexus letter is needed, it should be based on your records, medical history, and the specifics of your claim, not a generic template.

Swipe through for what to consider before getting a nexus letter.

Whit spent two years thinking the system was rigged.

His denial letter told a different story.

The VA had already agreed with two major pieces of his claim. The denial came down to one missing piece: a medical opinion connecting his current condition to his in-service injury.

Sometimes the most important part of a denial is understanding exactly what the VA is asking you to prove next.
