EnteroVirus Foundation

EnteroVirus Foundation EV - the scariest disease you've never heard of ....until now.
Enteroviruses infect an estimated 50 million people each year in the US and possibly a billion or more worldwide. They are associated with at least 26 different syndromes and diseases, including coronary heart disease, type 1 diabetes, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis, encephalitis, herpangia, myocarditis, pleurodynia, ADHD, and central nervous system infections such as polio, meningitis, encephalitis, chronic meningoencephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis.

Our role:
Determine the role of EV in disease-
The EV Foundation will provide pilot grants for promising scientific and clinical research. For inquiries about our grant process, contact [email protected]

Find antiviral compounds for effective treatment-
The EV Foundation will support studies for the development of antiviral and antienteroviral medications. Our preliminary plans are to work with organizations such as the Rega Institute in Belgium and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to extend and accelerate work that is already in progress.

Develop better diagnostic capabilities for "hard to detect" enteroviral infections-
After the acute phase of an infection, enteroviruses can leave the blood serum and cerebral spinal fluid, completely retreating to organs and other tissue. As a result, it can be difficult to diagnose enteroviral infections without a biopsy, and even then, the tests are limited. The EV Foundation will work with scientists and diagnostic companies to develop better diagnostic tools for detecting these viruses more quickly, less invasively, and with methods that work in less advantaged areas of the world.

Accelerate communication across the research and medical communities --
The EV Foundation will sponsor an international conference every year to encourage collaboration between scientists and medical professionals for the purpose of sharing knowledge and determining the most effective use of research funding.

Raise public awareness and improve education about enteroviruses
The goal of this Website is to create a global "go to" web-exchange for scientists, clinicians, patients, and the general public. We look forward to your input in order to make this an informative and useful site for all of its readers, whether they are medical professionals, scientists, or patients who are sick and looking for answers.

The Main Suspect Behind an Ominous Spike in a Polio-Like Illness

The main suspect....

In the 1940s and 1950s, the Polio Enterovirus epidemics would kill or paralyze 1/2 a million people a year globally. These Colorado doctors are fairly certain this new emerging mystery is another Enterovirus, EV D68 which could potentially do the same thing ...all over again!

A common virus seems to be behind a puzzling condition that’s paralyzing children, but uncertainties remain.

155 cases of polio-like illness under investigation, CDC says

Kids and even some adults this fall have taken ill with a sinister polio-like illness, known as AFM. The mystery continues as to whether EV D68 is the trigger. We hope the CDC and other investigators quickly find the cause for this dreadful outbreak!

There are 155 patients under investigation this year for acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, a condition that that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children, the CDC reported Monday.

Once again EV D68 is suspected as the cause of the recent outbreaks and cases of AFM across the country.

Once again EV D68 is suspected as the cause of the recent outbreaks and cases of AFM across the country.

Dozens of young children have suffered from sudden paralysis this year in the latest outbreak of acute flaccid myelitis. Some experts say that the CDC’s cautious approach seems to be standing in the way of development treatment and prevention strategies, especially as case counts mount.

Update on Acute Flaccid Myelitis

CDC Update on AFM - there was no verbal mention of EV D68 in this explanation, although many parents stated their child had been diagnosed as having EV D68 at the time. Obviously more research is desperately needed. After the acute onset of an EV infection, it is very hard to diagnose in patients as the levels in the blood are so low that traditional diagnostics are not sensitive enough. Please message us or email [email protected] if your child was diagnosed with AFM during the 2014 and 2016 Summer/Fall EV D68 outbreaks and let us know if your child tested positive for EV D68. We are conducting a survey and would like to hear from you. Thank you in advance - Lisa

NEWS: Your Story Needed

Since our launch in 2009, you have joined us in our fight to shine light on Enterovirus and spread hope to others in search of answers, support and resources to fight this disease. We couldn't have made it this far without you, so thank you.

You are our soul.

So, in 2017, and with the increase in Enterovirus outbreaks - both nationally and globally - we recognize the need to increase our presence and efforts with the launch of a new Enterovirus Foundation website (currently under construction) and many new resources, information and, most importantly, your stories of survival, recovery, family impact and more.

Why is your story so important now?

Because we know that Enterovirus is sneaky. It hides and can start out looking like so many other manageable conditions or diseases ... But in the end, it can be devastating, crippling and even life-ending. You and I know these effects personally, and our experiences need to be heard because this virus is so tricky and difficult to pinpoint early on.

So, with Enterovirus - one of the most widespread viruses unknown to man and woman kind - we need to join together, let our voices rise and lights shine. To do that, we need your story as a survivor or caregiver or family member impacted by the effects of Enterovirus so others can benefit from our experiences and insights.

Please join us and be hope for others through your words of support so all who come to our new website can find comfort through your journey.

You can reply to me directly of your interest or questions at [email protected]
I am so grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to your reply.

'Mini-guts' offer clues to pediatric GI illness

This article is somewhat clinical but it shows research is being conducted to determine how enteroviruses travel in the body. This could potentially provide the information needed to help find antiviral treatment.

Using immature stem cells to create a miniature model of the gut in the laboratory, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Pittsburgh have determined how infection-causing enteroviruses enter the intestine.

The EVF team met with Aviragen Therapeutics this week to discuss progress with Vapendavir, an antiviral that is in Phase 2 trials. The drug is demonstrating antiviral activity against EV D68, EV 71, and Polio. This is the only antiviral in the pipeline here in the US and we are hopeful for a successful outcome! The results of Phase 2 will be available the first quarter of 2017.

Team finds myocarditis caused by infection on rise globally

Myocarditis, a heart infection is often over looked and many times not even considered. To prevent the disorder from worsening in children, Dr. Cooper suggests that aerobic exercise be limited for several weeks after a suspected coxsackie virus infection, and "if a child or adolescent develops breathing difficulties or chest pain with evidence of myocarditis, my recommendation is to avoid competitive sports for at least three months," Dr. Cooper says.

Myocarditis, an assortment of heart disorders often caused by infection and inflammation, is known to be difficult to diagnose and treat. But the picture of who is affected is becoming a little clearer. Men may be as much as twice as likely as women to develop severe and possibly fatal reactions. An...
