UCGHI Center of Expertise on Women's Health and Empowerment

UCGHI Center of Expertise on Women's Health and Empowerment "To make major improvements in women’s health, you can’t look solely through a medical lens, so we’re really trying to look more creatively and innovatively at how to achieve better health for women through less traditional mechanisms."

The Center of Expertise in Women’s Health and Empowerment believes that advances in women’s health globally are impeded by poverty, limited access to educational and economic opportunities, gender bias and discrimination, unjust laws, and insufficient state accountability. These forces intersect to restrict access to vital women’s health services and the information that women need to improve their lives. By prioritizing women’s health concerns, rights, and empowerment, this COE is uniquely poised to catalyze societal-level changes that will yield sustainable improvements in health and well-being for women on a global scale.

Miss Representation

For all of you in the Bay area, there will be a screening of the Sundance award winning film, Miss Representation, on Wednesday, May 29, 5:15 p.m., Health Sciences West, 300, Parnassus. This film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America and challenges why a woman’s value lies in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. The US is 90th in the world for women in national legislatures and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating. Sushi will served! Sponsors: SAC, SHCS, MRC, PRIME, SNMA, and AAWD. Check clips out at http://www.missrepresentation.org/

The documentary Miss Representation, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

Happy holidays CoE members! Please see the message below from our co-Director, Craig Cohen:

As you are aware, we are trying to advance cross- COE opportunities and projects. To date, we have accomplished growing collaborations with Migration & Health. In addition, the One Health paradigm can provide an excellent opportunity to also focus on women's health and empowerment. The One Health COE will also be looking for Veterinarian students with an interest in our COE. Please think about opportunities that you might have to jump-start such a collaboration.
