Understanding Has Limits.
Sometimes we become so focused on understanding why someone behaves the way they do that we forget to acknowledge how their behavior affects us.
We make excuses because we know their past. We give another chance because we recognize their struggles. We stay patient because we know what it’s like to be hurting.
But understanding someone doesn’t mean you have to continuously absorb the consequences of their actions.
You can recognize someone’s trauma without excusing their behavior.
You can love someone and still establish boundaries.
You can offer compassion without sacrificing your own emotional well-being.
And you can forgive someone without giving them unlimited access to hurt you again.
Empathy is a strength, but it should never come at the expense of your own healing.
Understanding has limits. And sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is recognize where those limits need to be.
