NIACS team member, Stephen Handler, was recently on a temporary work assignment as the Forest Service Region 9 Tribal Relations Specialist. Stephen wrote an essay about how his work with partners from tribal communities and organizations has deepened his views on . This work includes Dibaginjigaadeg Anishinaabe Ezhitwaad: A Tribal Climate Adaptation Menu (TAM), produced by the U.S. Forest Service, NIACS, the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), 1854 Treaty Authority, Inter Tribal Council of Michigan, College of Menominee Nation, and others. The TAM provides a framework to integrate indigenous and traditional knowledge, culture, language, and history into climate change adaptation efforts. It also shows the importance of the human dimension in ecosystem stewardship – that humans can be a positive force for helping ecosystems adapt to changing future conditions.
