Understanding concussion at the cellular level. It's a frustrating injury because you can't see it. Athletes, parents, coaches and counsellors should see this.

What occurs at the cellular level in the aftermath of a concussion?

This will be a bit lengthy so if reading in Twitter be sure to hit the link to read on. Tomorrow marks the end of National Athletic Training Month. After 15 years at Spalding I have had some great memories, made some great friends, worked with some awesome students, coaches and administrators. Athletic training month is a celebration of the athletic trainer and what we do. We take great pride in doing the job well. We wouldn't be celebrating this month without those we have worked with and those we continue to work with. So to 15 years of graduating classes, to the administrators who believe in us to the athletic directors who value us to the coaches who know the importance of us, THANK YOU for celebrating Athletic Training Month. The simple step of having an athletic trainer to take care of the students at ASHS is a statement and a celebration. Until next year #WePrepareYouPerform

Athletic trainers prepare athletes for success

Thank you Dr. Geier for your support of athletic trainers. March IS coming. To my athletes, We will prepare, You perform. #NATMonth2015

Largely I think the confusion regarding the term “athletic trainer” stems from how so few people involved in sports truly recognize all that athletic trainers do. They largely don’t realize how critical athletic trainers are for the sports and the teams playing them. The National Athletic Trainers’…

Protect the throwing shoulder. Common mistakes young ball players make. There are always alternatives to mainstream strength exercises. Know them.

Though there are few absolutes in life, except for death and taxes. The following exercises should be approached with extreme caution for baseball players, other overhead athletes, and anyone with shoulder pain. For baseball pitchers these exercises should almost never be performed.

Over the last few years we've seen significant changes in the prehospital treatment of patients with potential spinal injuries. We've quickly gone from using rather extensive spinal mobilization techniques to doing virtually nothing. Few of the recent advancements in EMS have been this significant.…

High Schools Seek A Safer Path Back From Concussion

Concussions, no two are alike and as such individualized plans are necessary. Have a plan to manage them at your school or club? Rest or no rest? Heres a good read.

Returning immediately to demanding physical or mental activities after a concussion can be bad for the brain, neuroscientists agree. But what about after symptoms resolve? How much rest is best?

Inspiration to be an Athletic Trainer

A nice blog post from a colleague who sums up why athletic trainers become athletic trainers. We love our athletes. We love seeing them return to their sports. We do face challenges and he mentions challenging coaches and parents, but we happen to be very fortunate here. We have athletes who love us, administrative support, coach support, parent support and most importantly our own families support. Without these levels of support it is hard to do this job we love so much.

I have a football coach who tells me all the time “I don’t know why anybody would want to be a (athletic) trainer. Y’all are always getting abused and working a ton for little pay!” Sometimes I thi...

Spinal immobilization: Has it gone the way of dial-up internet?

The one constant in EMS is change. Ask anyone who has worked the streets for some time and they might tell you about the oral screw, rotating tourniquets and pneumatic antishock garments that used to be part of their practice. These devices and procedures have gone by the way of the dial-up internet…

WHACK! Study measures head blows in girls' lacrosse

As a father of two daughters playing lacrosse I read this with great interest. If you have a daughter who plays you should read this too.

As debate increases about whether female lacrosse players should wear headgear, a new study reports measurements of the accelerations that stick blows deliver to the head. The study also measured the dampening effect of various kinds of headgear.
